When Griffith goes to battle, it's carefully calculated to benefit him and his group in the end. When Guts goes to battle, it's to protect either himself or someone dear to him. Which is a constant theme in the manga as well. That is why Guts will always be better than Griffith. Because Guts is not fighting to get anything out of it. He is fighting because the situation dictates it and that is what he has to do.

I think that all of Griffith's actions can be explained through the lens of his dream along with his narcissistic tendencies to view the people around him as tools to achieve his dream. Guts left which was a threat to his dream, so Griffith desperately needed to do something to get him back on track toward his dream. I agree that he probably needed to feel some sense of control, or maybe he just wanted to sleep with the princess to try and block out the pain for a short while. Obviously, his decision to go to the princess was totally rash, but he wasn't in his right mind thanks to the massive blow he suffered to his ego and his dream. Do you guys have any plans to watch the movies/memorial edition after you finish the '97 series?
