6 years later, still one of the best guitar solos John has ever done and I've watched A LOT of his solos. From this point on, I knew this type of music was going to be awesome with him playing with the Dead.
I am so excited to see The Dead and Company in June at Wrigley Field. John Mayer is a perfect singer/guitarist for this band. I'm in love with both the Grateful Dead and John Mayer. Putting them together is the ultimate match.
First, Phil is a ba-a-a-d boy on that bass!! He sure lays down that groove. As for John Mayer...OMG! I think this is the best solo I've heard him play (and I've gone deep into his archive). Thank you for this delicious upload.
Really have to say, JM has already come a long way with the whole GD thing. The first video with him and Weir was like JM playing his style over GD music, which is kind of meh, but now I can tell he is trying to channel a bit more of Jer's tone. Triple humbucker pickup PRS. Sounds like he is trying to mix a bit more of some Jerry inspired sounds into his playing. Pretty nice.
MrMusicM67 I noticed the shift after the JJ Cale tribute album especially. On 'Born and Raised' and 'Paradise Valley', he was still pretty much straight major and minor pent scales - albeit brilliantly laid out. He's constantly evolving as a guitarist. He hasn't even reached is apex, in my opinion, which is exciting to me as a guitar player. He'll always be a blues head, which is incredibly difficult to "sanitize" from one's natural tendencies.
You just don't know how it pains me to give that punk kid props. John Mayer you "done good". Would love to know where you got that guitar. It's been "worked over" pretty good.
Still don’t understand all the hate for Mayer. Guy has been called a “Guitar master” by Clapton. He was chosen to be in Dead and Co by the existing band members. He has spent 3 years turning his blues and pentatonic approach into the model approach of Jerry, constantly evolving as a musician. I guess some ppl can never accept anyone but Jerry but let’s be honest here, there isn’t a guitarist alive who could do a better job filling those shoes. If you pass Bobby’s standards then he has to be doing something right. This was his second or third time jammin with the boys and it’s crazy good
The "hate" comes from his many years of coming off as - and by many accounts being - a total douchebag. That and his insipid songs and grating voice. He is, however, an undeniably excellent guitarist, and must have SOME cool in him to have embraced the Dead as completely as he has. Maybe he's just grown up.
the first solo was good, so good that it sounded memorized. the second solo break and everything after it is a disaster, don't tell me I was the only one laughing during the chord solo at 9:30. (and for the record, it's: "when they bring that WAGON 'round"). sounds much less Christian "rock" than "when they bring that ladder down," but hey he's doing his own interpretation.
+przybyla420 In case you didn't know, which it seems like you don't, John is the kind of musician to spend hours before a show constructing the in's and out's of a solo. The first solo probably is highly prewritten. I don't know why you would watch John Mayer play then criticize him on the way he approaches this show since he approaches every show that way. I'd say if Phil Lesh is happy to be playing with JM, then he's earned the right to enjoy the music and not worry about what some "unknown" thinks of his "chord solo".
I enjoyed the 9:30 stint. Obviously a little harder, but right in tune. By the way the audidance cheered after, they liked it to. Maybe glad it was done? xD
Maybe he will after you learn that it's Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. Even if you meant University of California in Berkeley, CA you didn't spell it correctly. 😅
I've been a Grateful Dead fan since the early 1970s. Now I'm a John Mayer fan after listening to this. Way to go.
Thank you for the love!!!! #JMISGREAT
Yes, Mr. Mayer deserves mad props for bringing the Dead back to life
John brought me to the The Dead! Thanks John 😊
I am happy that I have lived long enough to hear this.

I'll say it again: John Mayer is Dead to me. What a great time to be a Deadhead!
✊😭

Well, I can dance to this beat! Love when Jay pokes himself in to get a shot of Ross tearing it up.
Respect to John Mayer.
You passed the audition, Mr Mayer!
Haha, Jay Blakesberg head and camera shows up in this video. Thanks for filming this for us. It's awesome.

The back of Jay's head is featured in much of my video work! 😁

Max Flansburg You deff never seen John play live... you can see the inspiration he gets from the GD in his playing
Max Flansburg What does GD stand for?

Holy shit John Petrucci played back up for john mayer
+AftershockPS3 LOL... I love it!
Can actually hear the bass the best in this recording versus the other, higher quality ones
It's because I am in the Phil zone...
MarkoVision Films good place to be
Yah I noticed that. Very clear! I like it though 😁
You can tell the other guitarist is completely blown away by JM's solo.
Ross Motherfucking James is the "other" guitarist.
Damn that was too tasty! I would love to see John's pedal board for this show, i'm sure he didn't bring out the big rig
This is where John Boy earned his stripes, the rest is Dead & Co history
Sorry, but this is the greatest sugaree cut of all time
How many went to the show in 83
Not bad John ill have to say! Keep on truckin'
John looks like Buddy Holly
michael wenzel A hipster Buddy Holly lol.

ain't no time to hate. but deadheads have always had many varied opinions! That's nothing new.

Gold
Right on!
RIP Phil Lesh
First prototype of the super eagle?
+Bill Evans Well, this was the first custom guitar Paul made for John. It didn't quiet do the job, so they developed the Super Eagle.
+Chris Gaitanis well thank god for that. Thing looks way nicer than the deep brown.
Drink every time Phil closes his mouth haha you're sober!
Do you think he is using a EHX Q-Tron Plus pedal within the solos?
I SPIT HOT FIRE
What guitar is John using?
:)
John still great without play blues!
Dison2008 Curiously, the other guitarist actually was the one cranking out the blues
Love both and this song....but .....meh....not feeling it

+przybyla420 You'll look for anything to complain about, won't ya?
