Silent Pen_ No Lathe Pen Challenge

  • No power tools, no vice (which would make it much easier... probably next time).. I took this challenge as an evenings project and tho used just these hand tools in my room.
    Tried to design and make it so that it's comfortable in the hand and fully usable. And the finish to suit my sweaty hands :). Now at least I have my unique pen which I'm looking forward to use.
    (btw uploaded 20th Feb 8:55am in Prague which is 19th Feb 11:55pm in Las Vegas... phew)
    Thanks for watching

      Also, I learned a lot about presentation techniques. That feature with camera focus adjust is simply ingenious. Are you of visual art' background?

    Looks amazing! Can't wait to try it myself with some oak and maybe a fountain pen design. Would've been great to see some of the techniques a bit slower to follow along but it was still brilliant to watch!

      Thank you! Go ahead and make one. Fountain pen is a good choice. I am planning to make one too but with different design. I think it would rather fit a bit more classic design than this is.

    completely hand made.job well done indeed.brother if you don't know about instructables than definitely go their website there is a compition regarding woodworking.In my opinion this is a winning project.you have to just write about your build with some pictures.good luck and keep doing this.

      Thank you. I know instructables but didn't notice the contests part. I will have a look and consider participating but I'd better have some detail photos of the process which I don't have. Or I could make a new one.. I'll see, thank you for the comment.

      eRHonc Would you not be able to take stills from the video? I'm new to all this and stumbled across the video (gorgeous work, feels kind wasted on a ball point pen rather than a fountain but what do I know lol)

    • @eRHonc
      @eRHonc  7 лет назад +13

      Sure I could take stills from the video but the quality and detail wouldn't be good enough I think. For a tutorial it would be a lot better to take some close shots, focus on details and show the process clearly. Thanks, I know a fountain pen would be better but I couldn't get a proper nib in time so guess what I'm going to do next time. And as I learn during the process I think the next pen will be even better made.

  • @BobBlarneystone

    I like the vid, thanks. The clamping of the stock was adequate, but a bench vise might have been easier to use. Overall, there are many useful hand tool techniques shown, e.g. how to drill a straight deep hole with a brace & bit. Also, this would be a nice design for a knife, using 9mm snap-off blades.

    • @eRHonc
      @eRHonc  7 лет назад +1

      Thank you. Bench vise would make it a lot easier. I didn't post all the footage because there was much more planing and it would be sooo boring. I actually don't own a vise. I could go and use one at my parents but I thought it will be just fine even without it so I used what I could have used. It would probably be a bit more complicated to build but I too can imagine an exacto knife that looks like the pen.

      Ok - the angles of the profile-triangle are 68°-68°-44° and the ends and cap cuts are done under 60°. The overall length is 158 milimetres and the final height is 13 mm. Hope that helps.

    Impressive but I'm still not sure how the ink works in this pen design? Is there some sort of well, or do you just dip it? Besides that, this is a very inspiring video. I love to work with wood and to sketch. This is best of both worlds right here!

    • @eRHonc
      @eRHonc  7 лет назад

      Thank you very much! I also like to work with wood and do some design. And that's where it all began. The pen is actually a rollerpen so you just change the refill inside when you have to. I most probably will make a fountain pen as well but I'm not sure when - it could take some time.

    Just stumbled upon this at 1am and I think it's amazing. Probably the most beautiful pen I've seen in a while!
    What wood did you use here? It has a lovely grain!

      Thank you. That's really motivating and gladdening.
      I don't know what wood is it. I got it from my dad where it was lying for quite a few years. I saved some more so I'll try to find out and let you know.

    skvělí koncept jen by to chtělo hudbu do pozadí. Taky
    chvilkama jsem i přeskakoval protože některé pasáže byli moc zdlouhavé.
    prosím pokračuj.

      Díky, snažím se co to dá, i když tolik času nezbývá. Měl jsem co dělat, abych stihl poslat video před ukončením soutěže a sám moc zkušeností s upravováním videí nemám, takže u dalšího se budu snažit o lepší zpracování i zachycení. A pokračovat se teda taky pokusím, díky za podnětný koment a pochvalu.

    Paráda, akorat mi nejí jasné, jak jste vyvrtal tu díru ručně tak, aby sla přesně středem.ja s tím zrovna teď zápasím

    • @eRHonc
      @eRHonc  6 лет назад

      Děkuji. Je potřeba mít nějaké vodítko, které povede rovnoběžně s osou vrtu, ve videu je vidět, že mám vratný kousek chycený přes další dřívko. To jsem srovnal tak, aby právě vedlo rovnoběžně s osou a je vystrčené, pak už jen hlídat vrták, aby jel v ose podle toho vodítka. V podstatě je to to samé jako když se vrtá kolmo podle úhelníku. Ještě je možnost začít stejně z obou stran, uprostřed se díry potkají, záleží ale na aplikaci, jestli je důležitější mít přesnou díru po celé hloubce nebo přesně trefené otvory na koncích, v případě, ze by vrták stejně kousek uhnul. Tak ať se podaří.

    I like the design, but I feel like I didn't even get a proper look at it, because even the footage showing it off was so jittery and short :(

    • @eRHonc
      @eRHonc  7 лет назад +1

      Sorry for that. As the time goes by I see a lot of mistakes and the final showing footage is a big one. I really should have given it a bit more time. I'll surely keep an eye on it in my future videos. But I'm glad you like the design, thank you.

    Beautiful piece. Not sure why it's called silent pen, though.

    • @eRHonc
      @eRHonc  7 лет назад

      Thanks! It's called silent as the process of making it was pretty silent, no power tools no hammering etc.
      Would have named it better if I had better idea.

    • @cvoisineaddis
      @cvoisineaddis 7 лет назад

      No. It's not a bad idea. However, maybe quiet pen would be better? Even planes and chisels produce nice soft sounds.

    • @eRHonc
      @eRHonc  7 лет назад

      You're right. Sharp tools are great to work with and great to watch doing their work too :). I agree - quiet pen would be better. I have to give it a bit more time before uploading next time, now I'll just leave it the way it is.
