Young Scottie Pippen's beef with the Bulls grew from a fragile ego and a calculating GM | Part I

  • When you think of the 90s Bulls you think of Michael Jordan and winning and, oh yeah, definitely Scottie Pippen too. It's not easy being the second best guy on the best team. (Though I'm sure it's better than being the second best guy on a terrible team.)
And everything is made harder when your injuries aren't taken seriously, your contract negotiations are put off, and your GM likes Toni Kukoc more than you.
What could Scottie Pippen do but... demand trades and bench himself during the playoffs.
Move over championship trophies, you're blocking our view of Beef.

I wish this video, even if it wasn't about Kukoc, would have shown the shot because it was incredible. Another thing to note, it wasn't even the first time -that- season Kukoc would hit a game-winning shot with minimal time left on the clock. I'm sure the infamous Bulls/Pacers game back in January was on Phil Jackson's mind when drawing up the play.

@@elliemyers6435 Actually, it was Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf who told Scottie that he should just wait for a better deal because even he was saying that it wasn't a good contract. Once he signed it it could no longer be renegotiated. Scottie was desperate for financial security having grown up dirt poor in Hamburg, AR and wanted to help provide for his family. He signed the contract thinking that he might not have another opportunity to do so. It was understandable why he chose to do it, but at the same time he has no one to blame for that but himself.

Had he just waited, he really could have gotten paid, but, alas. Every night, he was tasked with guarding and shutting down the opposing team's best offensive threat and could legit guard all positions 1-4 and occasionally the 5. If we played Utah, he could guard Stockton or Malone, how many other players in that era could do that? I can't think of one from back then, but of course in the modern era with all the switching, a great defensive player like Kawhi Leonard could do that, but I can't think of anyone else from the 80s and 90s.
He was a good offensive player but allowed MJ to get the glory and points/highlights while he did all the dirty work. On the rare night MJ was off (20 pts was an off night for him lol) Pip could easily get 30. His greatest value was his defensive versatility, and I don't know if the Bulls would've won even half of those championships without him, even if they had Kukoc, Rodman, Grant, Armstrong, or whoever else they put around Jordan. Jordan never said Pippen didn't get enough credit. Because JORDAN HIMSELF GAVE HIM A TON OF CREDIT... But let's talk how good Pippen really was. Cuz defensively while he was a good weapon he stayed getting lit up by his counter parts.. great ball harasser one on one defender overrated. Nique Mullin Ellis LJ Aguirre Reggie Lewis guys of that ilk used to give him 30 to 40 on the reg. Jamal Mashburn gave him 52 in his 2nd seasons..the highlight tape is on RUclips. Offensively on the perimeter Pip was inconsistent. Even that famous Knicks game they won't tell you Pip got a clear out on Two Plays bricked the shot. Ewing got the ball 3 straight plays and scored on doubles. 6 point Bulls lead turned into a tied game. But Pippen had the AUDACITY to throw a hissy fit because Phil ran the play for Kukoc? The Ewing Dunk game Pip had 13 points. ALL HE DID really in that game was that dunk. Game 7 he wasn't good at all. Yet that's the series where Pippen got credit for being able to lead a team to a chip? Hardly the case.. This video was a Pippen fluff piece pure and simple

So, to trick the Knicks into thinking they would stick with Pippen (though we know he's never known to be clutch), Phil drew the play for Toni which was the right play at the time, Toni scored.

@@jbellflower83 the Bulls were exhausted and Jordan knew it. That’s why he contemplated til February about retiring. Once he saw Jackson made up his mind and wasn’t going to comeback even though Reinsdorf had already moved Floyd to the front office to give Jackson his spot back. And after he saw Pippen wanted out no matter what. And Rodman was too busy being a celebrity. He knew he wasn’t going to be able to carry the load by himself. He really should’ve let Krause trade Pippen for McGrady and Toronto’s first pick which would’ve been Vince Carter. The Bulls would’ve been set for the next 8 years.

I remember hearing M.J. say at one time when he was making 30 million a year playing for the Bull's that Scottie should be making the same kind of money as well, even though at that time Scottie was making around a million a year(was the 2nd best player on that team)and was pretty much near the bottom when it came to pay scale. So yeah Scottie has every reason to be salty because he has to hear every year how great the Bulls were(how Scottie is still upset)and usually all the credit goes to Michael & Phil!!!

I have to side with Scottie when it comes to how blatantly disrespected he was by Bulls management. It's totally fine courting a player you believe will be a key piece to the team, but that has come second after taking care of your homegrown superstars who are fulfilling their end on the court. Especially when everyone under the sun knows he's grossly underpaid compared to his peers at the position. The first contract was on Scottie for signing it knowing he was getting screwed, but when it came time to re-negotiate there was no reason to be so stingy and petty with him.

While Pippen was certainly probably one of the most underpaid athletes of all time when he signed that deal, he needed a sure thing. I understand why he didn’t wanna risk his families future so he took much less money than he possibly could’ve got, and he just so happen to greatly outperform what he was being paid but unfortunately that doesn’t change what he was going to be paid. It’s sad because this drama puts a blight on the legacy of Pippen Jordan and the bulls.

Jerry Krause, a man so despised, built one of the most legendary dynasties in all of sports. Six titles in eight seasons, a feat only exceed by the Boston Celtics. I respected it and it was a joy to watch the Bulls (especially when they crushed the hated Utah Jazz) even though I wasn't even a Bulls fan. Yet when Jordan, Pippen and Jackson rightfully received the credit and Krause received mostly ire, in his insecurity, he sought nothing else but to undercut the players and the coaching staff and nuke the team. The Bulls easily could have won 2-3 more titles were it not for Krause's pride, ego and miserliness. Instead, they followed up the Last Dance with Tim Floyd and a 13-37 mercifully short season.

    • @CrazyxEnigma

I personally believe that core was done after 98, but what came after that dynasty showed Krause wasn't near as good as he thought he was, pretty sure he wasn't involved with the team by the time Rose was drafted but correct me if I'm wrong.

@@CrazyxEnigma they maybe could've gotten 1 more had they kept the dynasty together for 1 last run in the 1999 lockout shortened year but Krause definitely played himself into believing it would be that easy to build another championship team from scratch. Krause deserves a lot of credit for the way he rebuilt the entire supporting cast between the first and second 3-peats but the main foundation of MJ and Pippen was in place throughout (with the exception of MJ's brief first retirement). He found out the hard way it simply isn't that easy when you don't have once in a lifetime type assets (MJ, Pippen) to build around.

Jordan was still Jordan but he'd have missed the season anyway since he cut his hand open with a cigar opener. Not to mention just the weirdness of the 99 season in general, nobody had any conditioning and lots of guys got injured. Fun what-if to think about though.

    • @coreyrowe4119

@@CrazyxEnigma I don't believe Rodman got waived because he couldn't play anymore, the Lakers waived him just because interim coach Kurt Rambis couldn't deal with his antics like Phil Jackson could. Bulls would've been in a decent position if they brought everyone back since the familiarity would've been there opposed to other teams with newer rosters who had to learn to play together on the fly. It would've been tough but I believe the Bulls at the very least would've made the Finals and faced off with the Spurs considering the #8 seeded Knicks wound up representing the east that year.
