- The early 2000s were full of amazing strategy games, games like AoE, CnC, Warcraft etc. but my personal favorite has always been the Stronghold series.
With it's amazing gameplay systems, beautiful soundtrack and insane level of detail it is still an incredible RTS in 2023 and definitely worth your time. For me it might even be one of the all time best.

Please Firefly. Go back to your roots and make the next installment a 2D game because I feel the Stronghold series is very suitable as a 2D rts. It gives a lot of personality to the series than 3d.

Old School Stronghold even after years is one of the best games I ever played and should be the benchmark for further Stronghold games. I m sorry but I don't like Stronghold 2 crusader and the others 2 3. It would be nice if in the HD remake version you will add more mechanics and stuff / buildings etc.
20 years later and the sprite graphics they used still hold well. I wish the continued using 2d sprites for their future games because it suits the Stronghold series very well.
Sadly, they wouldn't. Their next project is codenamed "Stronghold Unreal" and it's developed in Unreal Engine 5.
I think 3D is not the problem. They just couldn't make a unique style for their 3D models ;-)
@@igorthelight I do agree with "sadly". And I also think that "Definitive edition" is just another chance to raise some money, there will be less and less such comebacks. In one of the videos from devs - they said that that was not possible to find people who worked on the tree plugin ( just no contact with them :) ) so they had to rewrite trees from 0, when they moved assets to Blender.
It just means how difficult it for them to try to pretend this is 2003

@@yevheniiherasymchuk If Stronghold DE and and future Stronghold Crusader DE are successful, I see no reason why they couldn't make a new 2d Stronghold game.
I love how all the peasants are seemingly voiced by the same guy doing his best to sound like different people. Gives this game so much charm.
Plus, the fact that its a good wargame *and* a good economic game is just crazy.
Don't forget that the game even tells you different dialogue at different times.
When you are playing on christmas eve, the announcer will greet you "Merry Christmas, sire!".
In Stronghold HD, if you've been playing for hours, the helper also suggest you take a break or grab something to eat
When you enter the game, and have a normal name set up as your in-game nickname, it also goes "Welcome, sire John" (John is an example, one of like 300 names that it works with).
Damn. I have played this game numerous time many hours since it has been released but didn't know these at all.

Also if you call yourself in some way the game will say Welcome saying your name and trust me when i say there is a HUGE variaty of name you can use like MEGADEATH
the genious of these games - that I haven't really felt in others - is in the way that everything is available from the start - no tiers or tech requirements - but you still need to build up the economy from wood to stone, food bows then iron and so on, while giving you all the freedom to gimp your progress in favour of something else, it's almost a sandbox rts

Really enjoyed your shoutout to the german voice actors, when I was a kid I didn't realize it but looking back they did an AMAZING job. Especially considering the quality of many other VG dubs, especially during that time.

Varied economic options, units mention specific things that affect their happiness, over the top goofy computer opponents, lots of variety in how you build your castle, it's no wonder why people who have played Stronghold Crusader keep coming back after 20+ years even with so many well-known RTS games available. Started with buying a little $10 PC game I had never heard of that I didn't have to put in the computer after it was installed. That's a lot of bang for your buck. Terrific game.
I love how everyone totes their own localized voice acting as being the best thing ever made. They're all real classic we fell in love with.
Yea, I lived in France at the time of its release and could only get it in French. Can't get use to the English voice acting now
Im glad all the versions seem to have the same heart put into them for voice acting, the rather corny and hammy presentation is half the fun.
Yes, Stronghold has the right balance, making the game not too simple and not too complicated. I quite recently played Farthest Frontiers, another excellent game, but it requires MUCH more strategy and complexity.
I think Stronghold also was the 1st medieval themed RTS that used the flammable patch - fire arrow traps in the game to great effect.
Great gameplay, visuals, voice acting, background music, and campaign storyline. It's rare to find games that have it all :)

The Community Patch is a fantastic boost in quality of life, being able to heal wounded troops adds so much immersion.

Stronghold is completely underrated and an absolute classic. I've been playing it my whole life and I don't think I'll ever truly stop. "Pitch rigs must be built on oil in the marsh!"

Absolutely one of the best RTS games ever. Up there with AOE, WC3, early C&C and SC.
Definitely the one I have most playtime on. Just chilling building my castle and defenses while loving the music and vibes.
Loved playing it with friends and occasionally bombarding them with "knave", "peasant" and "varlet". Also threatening to string them up then laugh like a pig.
Truly a masterpiece!

About our beloved Stronghold Crusader: It`s pure nostalgia for me. Used to play in my teenage years, but back then I wasn`t such a good player. Some years earlier I`ve got on Steam for cheap and without hesitation I`ve bought it. Well, important thing to say, most of our childhood games lives in our memories and only nostalgia makes them good. If you play today them, it won`t be the same. But this gem is different. I played lately all of the 80 skirmishes and the historical campaigns. When I`m finished them I`ve just felt empty. I want more! If this game comes out now and not more than 20 years ago, it`s still would be a contender to other RTS`s.

I got my first Copy around 2005, and i still play Stronghold Crusader to this day. i would love to see younger gamers try Crusader too, but make sure to warn them about the Caliph calling them "INFIDEL!" and burning their castle early on xD

Great video, I'm actually surprised that people really enjoy this game as much as i have, especially as a child. Idk how I got into it but damn am I glad I did. Was always fun making my own castle in the Creator and then having it try to defend itself from waves of armies. Gosh, good times. Good video, keep up the good work!!

Stronghold is absolutely amazing. My cousin introduced this game to me many many years ago, and I played countless hours of custom skirmishes and online games with a few friends, its so much fun. I still play it from time to time. It's a shame that the 3D Stronghold games didn't live up to the classics, but I think the graphics and soundtrack are a huge factor to this. The art style and general vibes of Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader are just unmatched.
@percapita1239 Yeah the 3D games, every Stronghold that came after Crusader. Like Stronghold 2, Stronghold Legends, Stronghold 3, Stronghold Crusader 2, Stronghold Warlords. Some of them are cool games but they simply can't match the feel and immersion of the original Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader.

I was born in 2007 but i got to play the game from my cousin when i was about 7 years old and from that point i was deeply in love with the game, i still play it sometimes when im feeling nostalgic or just want to relax. Thanks to the developers for such a awesome game ❤
Honestly the original Stronghold games are so good. I was so upset when the newer games came with "better" graphics .. they totally ruined it. These two games were so good that the graphics never needed to be changed. All they needed was newer storylines perhaps.

The german dubbing is good, but I reccomend checking the polish one. I played with multiple just for fun, and the polsih dubbing is one of the best the game has. The polish version of The Rat just takes the cake.

Stronghold Crusader is my #1 favourite game of all time.
I've been playing for over 20 years and must have thousands of hours well spent.
With the UCP patch, I'm going through the campaign trail AGAIN as we speak.
Yeah my favorite pc game too. Fortunately, the UCP was developed in Germany so i could already play for 3/4 years with the UCP. The german modding community is crazy good and active and really took the game to another level with the bug fixes and new aic

Stronghold Crusader. My Childhood game and the best RTS/ building game of all time. I love this IP from front to back, and I hope firefly at some point gets back to the roots a lil bit. Stronghold warlords was a great game, but it isn't the stronghold but a mix of so many ideas that works alright but kinda makes stronghold not stronghold. Great video and i can already hear "die truppen der ratte greifen an!" or "ihr könnt dies dort nicht platzieren mylord"

there's no other game like stronghold that let you garrison your wall and make them a real defensive structure and not just a functional decoration

My favourite things in this game was maxing the food rations and placing couple bars and good things so i can max out the taxes to recruit 500 horse archers.

Well it´s because back in the day the game developers were actually players, they played their own game, they played other games and listened to community feedback.
Nowadays games are just a quick cashgrab, devs are barely testing their games, they listen to game journalists feedback who struggle on easy difficulty and then they have surprised pikachu face when the game on steam has negative reviews.
Luckily the RTS genre is having a wake up last 2-3 years i would say, but it´s hard to make a good RTS game and what im hoping for we get one day is HoI world map but with RTS battles. Doesn´t have to be WW2 setup, but i think that would be a great idea for a game.
Yes it will be hard to create, but it will be revolutionary.

I really like the stronghold games very authentic. The extreme version not so much as its just basically combat. Favourite line "Merry Christmas mlord.
Tell me what you want but this game REMAINS the best strategy game of ALL TIMES for me. I was never into strategies when I was little kid because I could not fully understand them but I was able to get the grip to some degree of Stronghold Crusader and played it almost every day after school back from 2003 - 2007..
And even now when i can play other strategies I still prefer and think Crusader is the best out ever, it's just the WHOLE package not some aspects.
The game just makes me feel relax and have a good time with no bad vibes.
There was another game, Knight of Honor (I think the 2 version was released), this game was really so epic, I still play it

t was the first game i ever played on a computer. I was on a windows XP computer in a basement
best strategy game ever made. also it reminds me of my cousin who suicided (rest in peace my dear brother). I first saw him play this game on his laptop back in like 2005 or so. It's a game that reminds me of the great fun we had together.

Video games can really bring out memories, good ones and bad ones. It's almost like playing the game can bring back a portion of how it felt to experience life at that point.
Never played this game, only vaguely remember it. But you could not have done any better job selling it! 200% passion!
