    This clip's title reminded me of a Terry Pratchett quote from The Colour Of Magic:

      _The Colour of Magic_ was about the fourth Discworld novel I read, having been given _Witches Abroad_ by a friend. I remember how disappointed I was with it at the time, but understanding it was his freshman effort. I may have to revisit it some day. I've read every other Discworld novel multiple times, except for _The Light Fantastic, Eric,_ and _The Shepherd's Crown._ The latter because I just can't take it. I'm also not a fan of _Raising Steam_ and _Pyramids._ That said, _Witches Abroad_ and _Carpe Jugulum_ are probably my favorite Discworld stories, followed closely by _Thud_ and _Hogfather_ in no particular order. I read Pratchett (or listen to the audio books, mostly) when I don't have enough energy to tackle something new.

    • @HellaGust
      @HellaGust 2 года назад +8

      @@tarmaque Colour of Magic and Light Fantastic have some good gags, but mostly they're just a bunch of jokes piled on top of each other without the depth or... y'know... plot of his later books. Later books have as good or better jokes, and said jokes are enhanced by the fact that there's a plot and characters (rather than caricatures or inversions of fantasy archetypes) holding the whole thing together. The Rincewind books just can't measure up to the Watch or Witches as far as I'm concerned, even those written later when Pratchett had undoubtedly found his groove. Rincewind just isn't as interesting a character as Vimes or Granny Weatherwax.

      @@HellaGust We have a concord. I feel exactly the same way. I also find his last few books after he had Alzheimer's disease to be a little flat. Like _Snuff_ and even _Making Money._ Even _Unseen Academicals_ doesn't quite have the sparkle of earlier novels, although it does have its moments. Like Vetinari's speech about the otters and the salmon.
      But considering the situation I understand _why,_ and choose to enjoy them for what they are while feeling privileged for the other more than 30 novels that I love.

    The real recommendation is to squat down and curl up small. That way you have the least height and the least contact area with the ground.

      Yep, and also we don't really have the means to instantly store that much electricity even when we do capture lightning (which has very rarely but still occasionally been done). It could be that there's a black hole nearby, stretching the time-space dimension and sound frequencies with it?

    • @yannatoko9898
      @yannatoko9898 2 года назад +1

      A black that effected the sound frequency would diminish the sound entirely. A mass of significant proportion may bend the waves but to an unnoticeable extent, most likely - the relative velocity between source and listener is the likeliest cause of pitch alteration, assuming no digital alteration / deterioration occurred.
