Super informative and helpful. Thank you. Would you consider doing a few more simple topiary tutorials? Not many on RUclips and you're probably the best one for this👍
I have trouble finding Single trunk plants to do topiary. This was a great video! Thanks Jim! Never thought of using these plants. Gonna give it a try!
Jim, loved watching you turn the little ugly duckling into a beautiful swan. And I like that you chose leaving the angled trunk. I like wind swept looking plants. I love shopping "death row" clearance plants and nurturing them back to life. So much satisfaction in rescuing these orphans. Thank you for discussing examining the roots. It was very helpful. I bought 5 mugo pines on deep discount. But when I got them home, I discovered the roots were all entirely black. In spite of all my efforts they were to far gone.
Excellent idea to find a clearance plant and try to topiary. I have wanted to for several years but didn’t want to waste the money! Now I can! Awesome. Thank so much for tips and inspiration. 👏🏻💕👏🏻
Loved this video! Linda Vater has gotten me hooked on trying topiary, and I loved your process/presentation! I must live in the wrong place for clearance plants - my Lowe’s never marks below $10 even for plants that look half dead 😀
@@mahoganyblue2571 - better deals than me! I loaded up at 50% off, because I always think buying later means distressed plants. At 50%, $130 got me 6 Monrovia distyllium (3g), a 6g GG, and 2 Monrovia jasmine(2g). At 75% off, got a 1 ft GrnMtn Boxw and full Lorapetaleum (both 2g) for $15.
@@P_Belle they're ALL making room for Christmas trees, good profit margin on those. Especially since many will have to buy another BEFORE Christmas. Cut trees just don't look good after over a month! What annoys me is that many of us, especially in the south, are still actively planting. Home Depot had almost NO soil amendments, few containers & VERY few plants. Garden Center NOT tree lot, grrr
LOVE LOVE LOVE this video, Jim. I shop Lowe's clearance perpetually and am so thrilled always to find a shrub like this that will look good all year. Showing your viewers how to take a clearance plant and create a plant that will be a centerpiece specimen for years is so helpful and so appreciated! Loved the way you pruned it. I would have planted it as you did as the centerpiece in your container... but it might have looked good planted to one side of your rectangular container and left it to look windswept--perhaps for a more Asian or more contemporary/modernist look.
Nice topiary form - 10. Facial expressions -10 Necessary force - 10. Fun to watch 100% filled with information, you in shorts wrestling a holly in middle of November, with entertaining clips & all we missed were the dogs! ☺️😁🙂😊
I love it! It turned out great. You took something that was on its way to the garbage and turned it into a lovely little topiary. Thx for the inspiration. I too love shopping the clearance rack at Lowe’s. Between you and Linda Vater, I think I can do it too 😊
Totally agree, the stem growing at an angle is great and adds some interest. Good to see you pruning it, very informative. Look forward to seeing your garden come together, walls and all - all very useful.
Wow this looks like a whole new plant! Definitely rejuvenated it. This is something I am going to be looking for when I go this week because I often walk on by them and think I can't save them
Another great video! Lowe's clearance plant section is my home away from home, especially now since they're clearancing plants to make room for Christmas trees.
Thank you, thank you for demystifying clearance plants! Right now our Lowes has 50% everything that is not Christmas plant related...none are distressed...but I didn't know if the normally clearanced plants are beyond hope.
My goodness the intensity on your face while your working! I love how this turned out, especially with the different directions of the trunk...such character! Thanks for sharing because the last time I tried to make a topiary...I had to cut the poor thing to the ground :(
Cool outcome for something that looked scraggly- : “don’t judge beehive holly by its looks. “ I’m sure the original saying didn’t think on gardening only cover of books! Lol. Great inspiration. I have a new appreciation when looking at the garden center sales area! Love your videos learning so much !
A doyen of topiary once told me that, one day he would like to grow a maze. It seemed to me quite logical that this should be his wish, and with that, we both went our separate ways.
Great transformation. I will be looking for such a deal and start my own collections. I have bought a couple of green little trees and transformed them into beautiful bonsai. Can't wait to start my topiary collection. Thank you for sharing!
Awesome! I picked up a zebra grass, an emerald arborvitae, and a crape myrtle yesterday for $13 total. Putting them all in the ground today as we are expecting our first frost tomorrow. Hope they make it!
This is so great! I’ll definitely be looking at those half dead plants at Lowe’s with a new eye. I am a sucker for recusing those poor plants. I’ve been seeing a lot of clearance arborvitae. Would this work for those as well? I know they can be trickier once the brown sets in.
@@JimPutnam oh great to hear. I’ll see what I can find. I just wish my store would mark them down a bit lower. They have so much stock but the prices need to be lower for the condition they’re in.
Drat! Just missed this video as I planted my $5 "Lowe's Death Rack" Beehive Japanese Holly this weekend. Still holding out for the Feelin' Blue Weeping Deodar Cedar video...
I am so inspired. I feel like the SNL target lady, "Where did you get that?!" vssst. Run to lowes. Find. Come back, super excited. 🤣. Personally, I do love the lean. Are there any disadvantages to keeping the lean?
The lean of the trunks gives it character ☺️
I think so as well!
Thank you for continuing to share how a garden can look great without breaking the bank.
Fun video. I love the tip about planting it on an angle to make it appear straight. i do that all the time.
Plants like many of us are not perfect. I love the way gardeners embrace the imperfections.
Love this. You only cut off 4 dead bits and already it was a topiary! I’m trying this 😊
It really isn't very hard. Sometimes it can take a season to work it out, but this one was fine immediately.
@@JimPutnam it was a great video and now I’m confident to try it. I do love topiaries 😍
Love the idea of practicing topiary skills on a clearance plant!!! Brilliant! As always, so appreciate all the great gardening content you share!
You made a silk purse out of a sows ear Jim! It was destined for the dumpster & now, it's a showpiece. Great look for that container!
I love the way you get right after the prune! I love clearance rack finds!! Thx Jim.
Would love to see more videos like this. Thank you
Turned out beautifully! Love what you planted with it!!
Thanks you!!

Same here. 50% off is common, with some "rounding down" . This weekend, shrubs went to 75% off @ Lowes. Great quality.
@@P_Belle Sure did. I got a nice arborvitae in a 3 gallon pot for $7.

You took something simple and struggling and made it into something unique and cute! Well done!
Thanks for such an informative video. You make it look doable- even for me!
You've just made the plant look totally different, in the most positive way. And in between those ornamental kales = It looks amazing! 👍
I like it. I’ve become quite obsessed lately with topiary and bonsai. I’m always looking around wondering what I can transform next. 😂

Jim, This video was great fun. I have my own little potters field full of rescued plants I try to nurse. Great satisfaction in that for me.
Love the faces you make when you’re aggressively pruning, love the video!
That’s so cute wow what a difference a little cutting and pulling makes love the arrangement 💐🌱💐🌱
This makes me want to check out the clearance section at Lowes. What a great idea!

A wonderful makeover! Quite a treasure, indeed. I just made a topiary with a boxwood, it was fun. Will definitely try some more! 🌿🌿🌿
Love the topiary. Linda Vater would be impressed. Go Jim!
We have similar gardening styles. I love quirky rather than always straight.

Love this project!!!
Looks great! I love to make something special out of a low cost bush! And it looks like it's already a bonsai with the curved trunk! Perfect!
I’m going to the clearance section!! Thankyou!!!

Ty for the great video! Ive never seen an instructional on topiary that made more sense
I get clearance plants from both Lows and Home Depot. I enjoy nursing them to health. Usually, Thursday’s are when they get marked down!
Looks amazing!
Thanks so much. You are the first one I have watched that makes the process clear and I can actually see the cuts you are making. Thanks.
I love the way it looks afterwards! It’s very nice to my eyes. I guess it all depends on preference. Lovely!
Nice tree and trunk movement!
More bonsai and niwaki pruning please! 👏✂️
This was super helpful. I love it already.thanks☺
Love topiary! very therapeutic!
Very pretty!
Next week Hortbonsai with Peter Chan! Beautiful movement on that trunk! Ha
Thank you. it will help me when I see plants I think are gone!!!
Love what you did with this plant!😊
Very inspiring video, I think I will give this a go. Thank you from Melbourne Australia
Enjoy your pruning skills! I am excited to try one
An instant topiary!
Yes!!
I hope we can see an update on this plant next year please 👍
Beautiful! I like it leaning, Somewhat unique!
Wow. So good. I'm new to all this. Fascinating. Creative. It almost like hairdressing.
Best $3 topiary EVER!
Looks very good. I like the lean too!
Great video. I always look atbthe on sale bushes. Now, I have a reason to purchase the sad fellows and give them a new purpose. Thanks
Good job, Jim!
Looks great👍🏻❣️🤗
That looks great. Thanks for sharing the process.
Looks good!
What a beautiful transformation! I’ve tried a few topiaries this past summer, & my husband calls them “treepiaries”! LOL!
Wow! Major change! Loved this video. I will never look at a clearance "dead" shrub the same. Thanks for showing us the potential.
Love it! I think the lean isnt so bad either

Really nice. You just gave me some ideas. I see you Mr. Ambidextrous :).
Great video, great channel. Thanks.
Love watching this. I love trying this. Silk purse from a sow's ear type of thing.....Is there a follow up? What did you end up doing with it?💚🌳
Wouldn't you cut out dead roots and tease up the rest when planting it? Looks great!

Looks great... love it! 😍

Great job! I'm seeing a mushroom shape, how about you? Do you need to cut out those dead roots or not?
I want to try this. Great video
