What do you think of the new Hobgoblin?

Maglubiyet: Look how they massacred my Hobgoblins

New hogbob picture looks goofy like a low int warrior posing as a bard. Which is not what hogbog would be.
Also I also feel like accent on fey ancestry makes them more of an another cosmetic+bonuses race desantagonized for player to play it "ready to consume".
Hopefully they will build a relevant new and interesting lore for newly fey-ry hogbogblin and things will go well. It's possible.
But for now it's a hard sell.

It really feels like they're trying hard to reinvent the Hobgoblin (which makes the more brutal Bugbear art confusing) but I wouldn't hold out much hope on the lore. They're moving heavily away from giving us lore for races and are actively stripping out the law we do have, such as the Lizardfolks different way of thinking disappearing.

Just started a campaign as a Hobgoblin druid. My friend is playing a Bugbear Monk that is my cousin & given this new flavor we're both from the Feywild. With the old traditional Hobgoblins & Bugbears being common in the material plane. It's a fun dynamic to play with because our characters naively don't understand the stigma against goblinoids.

that pic looks like someone's idea of a Bard-barian.

I think Matt Colville's background for hobgoblins is better. They are the result of a wizard experiment mating goblins and humans.

I like that as a reason for Hobgloblins, though I'm personally a little exhausted by the extensive 'a Wizard did it' parts of the game to explain creatures. The Hadozee being the most recent example.

I like the new features that Hobgoblins get, but WotC has veered *waaay* too far in trying to "humanize" them to the point it feels like a complete retcon. Oh sure, they're *described* as functioning in a militaristic society, but nothing visually or mechanically represents it anymore. The picture feels more like a joke character than someone hailing from a culture where martial prowess is what is most valued.

By trying to remove culture from races and smooth over anything that might be offensive, WotC is straying more into 'Humans in funny hats' territory, where everyone is basically human and no one has a reason to think any differently. This is made more awkward by things that used to be cultural, now being things that are culturally enforced by the gods, like... that isn't a step forwards...

I think this new Hobgoblin stats support an extremely communal and community oriented race that would be Lawful Good or at least regularly did Lawful Good acts for survival purposes.
In a way, they’ve been dragged from their quasi-Roman culture into a white-washed Chinese culture (in that they are extremely legalistic and orderly, although I’d say the Chinese culture has historical trended towards Lawful Evil rather than Lawful Good)

Noble Background grants you three retainers... The Noble Hobgoblin's draw on the Power of friendship! err... Bonds of reciprocity! Survival Check, Boom +3 found some food. Perception check, Boom +3 found something suspicious. Persuasion Check, Boom +3 just barely persuaded. If they can help you, you have advantage. And should you still fail, know that you will always have the Power of friendshi... Bonds of reciprocity!

My Little... Hobgoblin, Friendship is Magic?

I feel like they are trying to hard to make all character races to be nice and friendly. Not saying everything needs to be mean or evil. But some creatures can have antagonist and militant societies. I mean that makes your character stand out more if you go again your cultural norms. Not everything needs to naturally be a good guy. Finally just let goblins be plain old goblins everything seem to be fey now, come on.

For the game I hate this change. For the sake of mythology for which they are named... well, its a lot closer. Hobgoblins were the friendly kind of goblin.

See, if they’re weren’t doing this with everything I’d appreciate semi-rehabilitated Goblinoids.
