It's a tricky problem, the more thrust is kept on the booster the more is needed on the 2nd stage to pull away -- but that increases how much the booster is pushed backwards (and damage levels). And at that point the 2nd stage has got to be far denser than the almost empty 1st stage, so F=MA is not your friend. You have to get F on the 2nd stage to be much higher than reverse thrust F on the 1st stage -- basically by not pointing the exhausts at it.
