    I had a mildly painful shoulder for a week or two. Got up one morning and tugged on my quilt with my right arm. I heard a loud pop with sudden intense pain. I fail all 3 of those tests. I see my orthopedic surgeon tomorrow. He did rotator cuff surgery on my left shoulder just this past April 2017. I have a feeling I have a tear and am probably looking at surgery again. The pain this time is much worse than with my left shoulder, plus I'm right handed, so a painful right shoulder is making life interesting, from pulling up pants and a bra to driving. You guys are wonderful! I know I'm looking at physical therapy after surgery.

  • @tracybianco8663

    I experienced a loud pop with minimal pain while pushing off the ground about a week ago. I have minimal pain/pressure that seems to move from the front, side, and back of the shoulder. My daily activities are not impacted, but I have tried to reduce aggravating the joint and muscles. I’ve dine all the test without weakness and no/minimal pain/pressure. The two test that I felt minimal pain/pressure is the lift-off test and teres minor test. Thanks to you I’m not panicking while waiting for my appt that’s several weeks away.

    Was out metal detecting; went to push up with my right arm while getting off the ground ( hey, it was a deep target I was digging)...snap! crackle! pop! Couldn't swing my detector side-to-side and had trouble putting my gear in the bed of my truck. When I got home I could hardly reach across to the passenger side sun visor to push the garage door opener. Seeing my Doc on Monday. Great video, fellas, very informative and helpful.

    Thanks guys, it made sense. I had an operation 3 months ago for a rotator cuff tear at last. I went to numerous doctors before a doctor actually sent me to a specialist to check it out and I was operated within 3 days. Either Australian doctors are stupid in this field or it is difficult to assess shoulder problems. so many years pain for nothing. I wish this had been explained to me before, instead of being told to put up with the pain. I am glad I finally found a doctor to listen to me, and now I have a good physio who is great with aftercare.

    I was told rotator cuff tears don't heal on their own. I fell down the stairs onto a concrete floor on to my left side. I had an open wound fracture (ulnar side). They did surgery & put a steel plate in & cleaned it out. Couldn't have MRI at hospital. I have a pacemaker that's safe for MRIs but it has to be a closed MRI & only certain hospitals are trained in the proper protocols for patient w/ implanted devices. I also have to have a technician from the device company come out & switch my pacemaker into a different mode. So anyway I had an MRI later & it didn't show a tear but the Dr said it looks stretched or overextended. He said there could be a microscopic tear but he can't see anything other then it being stretched out. I got a steroid injection but haven't got much relief. He said PT won't heal it but it's still good to get stronger around the area. PT helped somewhat but the little sport where it really hurts never gets better. I want to see if platelet rich plasma therapy would help. I probably can't afford it though.

    Great video helping many around the world for sure.
    Can you do a video on how the back adjusts for occupational needs and the hows, whats and whys to readjust the back, say when one retires.
    For women who wore high heeled shoes for decades; do ligaments or tendons shrink to adjust? Are there exercises one who wore heels can do to avoid feet and back problems immediately or even years after discontinuing heels?
    What do you think are the odds there are people in rest homes across the US, or the world for that matter believing they are permanently unable to walk who can be freed up from immobility (and the associated costs and restrictions) because of unnecessary and untreated back pain?
    Again, I really appreciate your videos. The great posture of both of you is your greatest "selling" point.

    Hi Guys,
    Great video. I did the tests and don’t seem to have a problem, but I still suspect some rotator cuff damage. I'm very active and strength train 3x a week. I have a HUGE knot in my upper right trap, (which doesn’t seem to go away no matter how much I wall-roll a lacrosse ball on it). I have pain in the tip of the shoulder on the right side too, and what I feel like is (muscular) pain around, under and on top of my shoulder blade (right side only). I'm completely pain free and without symptoms on my left side. I have read that sometimes, when a muscle or joint is damaged, other muscles knot up in order to protect/ overcompensate the affected areas. I've had this problem for months, and have been doing all sorts of corrective band exercises - to no avail :( My biggest problem is the knot in my trap... It's affecting my performance on the deadlift and other exercises and just generally doesn’t feel good. Any advice guys? Will really be appreciated!

    Most helpful vid Ive seen in terms of aiding the "self-diagnoser." The third test - the pull-away - is the only one that affects me. Actually getting into that position hurts, yet I can easily move the hand away from the back. Only time I can activate pain is when I do pull-ups and it causes pain in upper triceps and down side of deltoid. Went to orthopedic. Took xrays (no issue). Says I strained one of the rotator cuff muscles. Since I indicated I felt better after a week (though still have pain and limited range of motion), that my only treatment right now is to give it some time. Why does the tricep muscle hurt if it's a rotator cuff injury?

    when i was in school i used to pop my shoulder in and out just for fun. i liked the noise and the fact that i was the only one who was able to do it. stopped within a month cant do it now. im 23 now. when i was 22 i dislocated my shoulder when i extended my arm swimming freestyle. the moment my arm entered the water and applied downward force (somewhat twisted, i guess external rotation from the hours of self research on youtube) it dislocated and poped back in position, just like the time when i was a kid. only difference. i had a different posture this time and i had some decent amount of pain for 4-6 days. from what i know i have pain when im doing the hawkings test... also the same position i used to pop my shoulders in and out when i was a kid. (i was 9 years old). got an mri. doc told me to operate. i said no .went to physio. didnt work out. i have dislocated it a few times . and each and everytime when i did the external rotation test, it used to hurt. i need help. i want to join the army. i can bench 35 kgs. i can do a lot of pull ups. and i have built up good strength on all the three deltoid muscles.its just that one awkward position where its a disaster. desperate for any help from both of you incredible doctors.
    love from india.

      Mihir Rao you know what’s funny, is that I have this exact same issue, I was doing a conditioning test and I dislocated my shoulder and it popped back in, I can do that same thing I used to do it all the time and I tried building arm and shoulder strength and doing rotator cuff workouts my doctor provided me. It’s a struggle. It’s been 2 years since your comment was posted. Do you have any tips and has anything changed?

      @@Chpats_ well i couldnt get into the army. i went through a physio who taught me some ergonomic exercises which helped me tremendously. i also went to the gym for 8 months straight and bulked up my shoulders. i did not do a single bicep curl in those 8 months since the ergo-physio told me to mass up closer to the joint to keep the center of gravity at the joint. i also invested some time in yoga and functional movements... ALL of these have helped me in my muscle memory. so much so that even before attempting a risky movement with my arms extended i know if its a safe move or not. if not, i take a step back and change my approach to lifting the object or whatever the activity is. or i just dont do it at ALL. its been 2 years, and i have popped it once. i feel super confident honestly. muscle memory FTW

I'm not able to comfortable sleep on my stomach as I'm a bit overweight, but even so, trying to sleep on my stomach with my arms parallel to my body causes my Right shoulder to badly hurt. I've seen two Consultant Surgeons (VERY expensive) and the first test they asked me to hold my arms straight outwards, at no angle and thumbs pointing towards themselves. They never did the 'Drop Arm Test' or even the 'Lift Off Test'. I've tried the 'Lift Off Test' myself and I can't lift my hand off my back at all. I think I need to get a plane ticket to sort this out.

    • @FegrusMojo
      @FegrusMojo 7 лет назад

      Thanks, I've already had two shoulder stabilisation ops done with three months of PT after both of them and none of them did these tests so, think I'll get on a plane and sort this out myself ;) Two rips in the cartilage & after the first operation to fix those it blew apart again along with the cut through my chest/shoulder they made to fix that. The second operation fixed one torn cartilage and the bust open muscle in my chest/shoulder that they cut through the first time after it blew apart plus they 'shaved a bone' to make the upper arm fit deeper into the arm socket. And now after being in a car crash none of them will go near it. It's ok, I get my dental work done with a plane ticket and I'll be doing the same with this now ;) I think myself though that I'll just have to work on the muscles there and just make the area stronger, another operation on it may not be good at all.

    • @FegrusMojo
      @FegrusMojo 7 лет назад

      No not yet, it's still a bit sore 16 months after the crash (constantly sore for around 8 months), the surgeon said it's 'deep tissue damage'. The arm locks up sometimes, small dislocations as well. I think I'll wait for the pain to get less before putting it under pressure. (edit) the surgeon said injections for the pain and physio.

    • @FegrusMojo
      @FegrusMojo 7 лет назад

      Yes, I'll get a plane ticket and have it looked at just to be safe but I don't think another operation will do any good. When the pain fades a bit more I'll build up the muscles there myself. Loads of great videos here for that Physio on UTube and thanks for sharing this one you guys, very good information here.

I am about 50% on mobility and strength now...Doctor said he could bring that to 75% with surgery but much work on my part. Not sure if surgery is even worth it, so I will watch and see if my mobility and strength goes down in the next few months.

    I utterly failed the lift off test on the right side. Hmm. And I'm very hypermobile (I have Ehlers Danlos, hypermobile and classical types both) and found that very surprising. My AC joint pops out a lot and my humerus rotates forward causing me a lot of pain until I get them put back in. But it's almost always the left that is horrible, so the right side failing really surprised me!

    How about the opposite of test 2? I have a shoulder injury that I sustained over a month ago. I just followed along these tests, and my pain is severely amplified when I try to swing my arm outward against an inward force. So, basically, arms to the side, elbow bent 90 degrees, hand in a fist, close together in front of me. Then rotate arms, pulling fists apart. If there's the slightest force pushing inward, I have to stop the motion because of the pain. It's been almost 5 weeks now and there's been little improvement, and I'm starting to get a little concerned.

    outstanding presentation, i'm trying to work out what my pain is after a motorcycle injury. Thanks a million it will certainly help in the diagnosis, I'll mention this stuff to my GP when I go back for the results on my X-rays

    • @eazyrider6122

      ***** Thanks, I tried your tests my arm behind my back was painful but I could do it, I had only been able to lift my arm originally out straight in front about 5- 10 deg and to the side maybe 15 deg. The next day was the same the third day I can now move my arm out real slow and with pain to about 30-35deg to the side and about the same at the front. I can get my arm up higher only if I bend my elbow right in maybe cause of less weight out front and just manage scratch the back of my head.
      I have the results of the X-ray here
      Right Shoulder- An undisplaced avulsion Fracture of the greater tuberosity of the humerus is present. The humeral head remains within glenoid.
      Im gathering without an MRI that all my tendons and ligaments may have a slight tare at worst as I have the movements improving and greatly each day maybe due to swelling going down. I have a greenish ting bruise on my bicep and some slight muscular pain in my rear shoulder blade from time to time but it seems not to bad. I think a lot of internal bruising around the ribs, None fractured or broken.
      I thought this may help with any future similar injuries you investigate.
      Cause was coming off and over a motorcycle landing on my side shoulder down head tilted up to the side landed in mallee bush off the road, no protective jacket just a open face helmet and jeans shoes and a Tshirt.
      I might do a video of my movement and post it. I used the hatch back door with air rams of my wagon to aid my arm going up and down just to help keep movement. I keep my other arm there only as a safety if it hurt to much. This helped get my arm over my shoulder. Now I have the results im just going to rest it. The unknown was stressing me a lot and I do not think i'll ride the bike that angry again. I wasn't supposed to come out the other end of it but I did. I'm cool with that now but I wasn't to cool at the time. No one ells on the road, No one ells involved. Cheers for your support, Yes I feel stupid.

    You don't have to have pain or loss of range of movement, to have a tear. Ive had mine for a month but not much pain and no loss of movement, initially. A few weeks later i can barely pick anything up or move my arm without having to suffer for it later. Most doctors will just say you have an injury like a strain, if your able to move fine. However, this doesn't mean you don't have an issue or a small tear that's about to get worse

    • @5447princess

      I was waiting for someone to mention this. You don’t have to have intense pain or loss of motion to have a tear. ER diagnosed me with a sprained shoulder. I can move it. But it has loud pops if I move a certain way. And it’s more painful at night. So I’m seeing an orthopedic on Friday hoping to get some solid answers.

    If only all Doctors would pay attention to this. It took me 3 years for first surgery of shoulder Dr promised to look at cuff but didnt. Year later talked another Dr into fixing imp again and this time he promised to check for tear. Sure enough torn rotator cuff. Took over 4 years of pain to have someone fix. Now severe pain still with severe tendinopathy and severe bursitis and that old tear feeling is back again. No Dr will listen again. Over a year in extreme pain again. I go days on no sleep from it. Why do Dr never listen to patients only read MRIs. We know are bodies. I failed almost all these test. Esp the hand behind back. Doesn't move a inch.
