- Quest for 46: Hiking the Adirondack High Peaks - Allen Mountain
Allen Mountain is a long hike no matter how you approach it. We decided to stay at the Flowed Lands Lean-To and approach it via the East River Trail following the Opalescent River. As a bonus, this trail passes the beautiful Handing Spear Falls.
Allen Mountain from the Flowed Lands was just over 16 miles. The trail to herd path was very flat, dry and root/rock free. The herd path was everything expected when we started to hit elevation. Steep, rocky, and RED SLIME.

Doing Allen this coming Monday from the Flowed Lands. Thank you so much for this video! I’ve been back and forth about whether to bring my micro spikes because there are so many mixed reviews, but I’m definitely bringing them now.
Have fun! Let me know how it goes.
Funny you should say you would do the Dix range again. Godspeed and until next time, you are awesome Mike!
Going back to Dix next weekend! I will probably plan an Allen trip next year too. I will suffer with everyone else working on their 46er.
I hiked Allen last Monday and then hiked from there to the ADK Lodge
Big day!
@@OutsideChronicles for sure this was probably my 2nd most dominating hike over the Adirondacks just behind my 21 hour hike(6am to 3am) I did last Fall when I hiked from from Upper Works to JBL and I did Redfield Gray Peak Skylight and Haystack all on the way
@@kevinvesuviusevilmowgli It's a slog and a big mountain, well done!
@@OutsideChronicles I know Allen is a big mountain but not a big as the 4 that I did during my 21 hour hike
Thanks so much for making this video. So useful as I plan my hike there in a few more weeks.
My pleasure, it’s a long one no matter where you hike in from. Good luck, Allen is a big mountain, but a very cool climb!
It's so beautiful there! Been wanting to get out that way for a while now I get some footage for my own channel. Really enjoyed the video thanks for sharing!
“Dix is awesome”
Ha, of course!
Excellent video. Looking forward to Allen next summer. Thanks!
Good luck, it is not as bad as people say it is. Remember to walk past the summit to the overlook. Are you going to do it as a day hike?
Outside Chronicles, that’s the plan as of right now. It looked like a nice hike down from Lake Colden, so camping there might be a good time as well.
Happy to be a new subscriber. Really great content, I bet your channel takes off.
Great share. Beautiful, thick area in parts.
Outdoortrailhikers camping and overlanding. Thank you. No matter what way you tackle Allen, it is a long slog.
Great video, and I'm glad you too contradicted some of the old notions that there's not much in the way of views from Allen. The views from the overlook a few yards up the ridge are amazing.
Mike Miller I know! You get a remote (but high) perspective of mountain ranges from a great angle. I am glad my friend Bob read about that overlook. I am thinking people are too tired and frustrated to explore. Thanks for watching and subscribing.
Gore-Tex water proof hiking boots and Gaiters.. Your best bet in the Adirondack Mountains. Boots with good ankle support..
Even with Bob's success, I still love the Salomon XA Pro. I have never been a hightop fan even playing sports (personal preference). Do you find the full gaiters too hot outside of winter? I tried the lightweight ankle high ones, but they do not offer much protection in heavy mud. However, they are great in dusty, gavel, sandy situations. And thanks for watching!
As I recall the red slime was not even a thought when I climbed it!
It is made out to be worse than it really is. It is very slick, but nothing that should deter you from climbing. We tried microspikes on the steep part with the slime, it was unnecessary. I will say it was a dry day, it might be worse if raining. More of the slime comes into play. We were able to avoid it.
I loved your Allen story. Did you ever get a chance to watch my Allen winter story? Most epic butt slide ever! Also if you watch my dix mountain range story we climb the Beckhorn to watch the sunrise from Dix
Yeah, I saw the Beckhorn video. I will have to check out Allen in the winter. I am sure it was a bear.
I did not enjoy allen at alllllll. Took my friends and I two tries actually, both in the winter, both just awful haha. That being said theres some crazy butt sliding on the way down so that was the only pro
Matt Dinu it would be a Bear in winter. Glissading is the best! Intentionally or not!
