This just adds to how selfless Maggie was as a character not many people are in a position in life to do something this selfless. Some would blow their excess money on themself, not on a parent, and furthermore, most parents would be happy if their child did this for them. The only thing worse than this is Maggie's mother later trying to use her wealth to benefit herself after her daughter gets her back broken.
People don't believe this, but there are an awful lot of people like this in real life. It's just that they portray a shield of "good people" to manipulate others

You should watch the world famous Swedish film "Autumn Sonata" made in 1978 starting Ingrid Bergman. Anyone who has had dysfunctional mothers can really appreciate THAT movie. The mom on this movie, though relatable, is a caricature. Monster moms are not who don't show love to you. They are those that make you hate yourself because they make it clear to you that you are a defective human being. Children of monster moms have to fight a long journey in their adulthood to stop feeling ashamed of themselves. At one point in their life they realize that they have nothing to be ashamed about because they have committed no crime or vice and have not been mean to anybody. The fact is, society pressures women to children although some may have no maternal instinct. These mothers resent their children even if they love them on some level. If you don't love your husband, you can divorce him. Unfortunately for both the mom and child, if a mom doesn't love her child she cannot get rid of her child until they go to college.
I've known people like this. These are people you have to cut out of your life even if they are family. They either hold you back, put you down, live off of you or any combination of the three.
