Within Temptation started out as a Gothic metal band. The Gothic genre has it's roots in Doom metal. Their first album 'Enter' drew a lot of attention in the metal community and their first show on a big festival was sensational. From that moment on they were an accomplished name. The second album 'The Dance' was a continuation of the same sound. With their third album 'Mother Earth' they switched to a more symphonic approach. Robert gave up on growling and the album became a huge succes. It was their big breakthrough, and they even made it to a more mainstream audience and hit lists. It is probably their most succesful album. They continued the symphonic metal style for two more albums, and then evolved to a more modern power metal sound which they still have. Robert gave up on touring to become a house father after Sharon had given birth to their first child. He continued to be a band member behind the scenes and I believe he still writes all the music together with Sharon. Sometimes, only on very special occasions, he joins the band on stage. Sharon had a difficult time in 2018 when she lost all inspiration for the band and she even doubted whether the band could still continue. She had to write her personal solo album 'My Indigo' to deal with the issues she was going through, and to be able to regain her creative focus on the band. In 2019 they released the album 'Resist' and this year they have released their latest album 'Bleed Out'. After 25 years, the band is still going strong.

"The Silent Force" (2004) and "The Heart Of Everything" (2007) came after, three very successful symphonic metal albums. With "The Unforgiving" they ventured through a modern sound that is closer to what they are today. "Hydra" was released in 2014 and marked a time of criative crisis inside the band which was the origin of Sharon's solo project called, "My Indigo" (2018). They released "Resist" in 2019 and are working nonstop since then. This year they released their eighth studio album, called "Bleed Out". So WT started as doom metal/gothic in 96, went on to their symphonic metal signature sound in the 2000 and in 2011 began to blend it with modern rock/metal until this day. :)
Within Temptation was one of my favourite bands growing up / as a Dutch alternative teenager. Everybody in the scene knew these guys and hearing Sharon sing like that just gives me SO much nostalgia. Also, this song gave me goosebumps, not just on the arms, but on the legs too... so you know it made an impression ;) Some of my favourite songs are: - Angels - Frozen - Mother Earth _(very_ nostalgic) - The Howling
