The _Die Like a Dog_ Quartet was one of the groups with which Brötz blazed a trail still visible and frequented today, four men, each with other projects of their own, who morphed into an entity, a tight, well-rehearsed ensemble that left a mark in our memory, enabling us to pinpoint pretty accurately the moment in time and the location where we were listening to them. Ruhe in Frieden, Peter Brötzmann, und *Danke für die Musik!*

Some people call this noise as if that's a bad thing. Somebody called Brotz a random generator. If he could actually do such a thing that would be a great technique. People who go on about tradition, or go on about The Tradition, and then go & shit on stuff like this are just serving their gatekeeper function. But tradition is the thing to rip off ideas from, not worship.

He never plays the same "song" because there are no songs. Peter Brötzmann is what you'd call a "noise/experimental" improvising artist. He pretty much doesn't write songs. He improvises.

Yeah, the biggest early loss in jazz in my opinion (lee morgan follows). In my opinion he is the most unique of his time. His improvisation is sugar to my ears and flows like a river.I can't even imagine how much he could accomplish had he lived 10-20 years more. That's why i love Bennie Maupin,he is a bit like Eric but also very different.

Sorry, but I came up through the "energy era"....Coltrane, Pharoah,, Archie Shepp, Albert Ayler, Ornette Coleman......their "past the norm" explosions of sound and "past the notes" playing were emotional outreaches at the conclusion of their searching for expression. Their traditional training had developed their skills and the times they were in brought in the searching and the ultimate "outside" sounds. This one sided music by Brotzman is void of a foundation and its focus on only the explosion results in noise

Traditional Training and knowledge of the artform is the key to an extended Vocabulary - even if you go far beyond the Limits . Peter Brötzmann did not study the music enough , as Shepp , San
ders , Mangelsdorff , Kuhn did - therefore having much richer results. Poor Peter sounds always the same : a musical random number generator . One minute of his playing in a loop are enough to cover all he did .
