- Rising tension in the occupied West Bank is a major barrier to any hopes of peace. In the last month alone more than 160 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli settler violence and Israeli raids.
The occupied West Bank is a Palestinian territory that has been under Israeli occupation since the 1960s.
There are thought to be more than 700,000 Israeli settlers living in the West Bank, in nearly three hundred settlements.
And, despite being considered illegal under international law, the Israeli government plans to build even more settlements there. It's an enduring flashpoint that threatens hopes of reconciliation.

Since when has the world EVER punished the breaking of international law? What has the world done about the 280,000 Iraqi civilians or the 234,000 Afghans killed? When has the USA EVER been held accountable for ANY of its actions over the last 75 years? After 75 years the only people punished for war crimes are the losers in any conflict.
Articles in international law are recommendations. If it comes to court they are non enforceable, sadly. Israel knows this and they push further with the occupation.

I felt the same way when I visited. And it's WAY more complex than the media would tell us. Israelis vs. Palestinians vs. Druze vs. Muslims vs. Jews vs. Christians vs. Orthodox vs. Secular vs. Liberals vs. Conservatives. The hate on both sides is palatable and will be hard, if not impossible, to resolve.

Israeli settlements in the West Bank started after the 6 day war in 1967 when the IDF took the land in defence to an offensive launched by Syria, Jordan and Egypt. Israel conquered Golan Heights from Syria in the North, the Sinai Desert from Egypt in the South and the West Bank from Jordan. Both Golan Heights and Sinai Desert were returned in exchange for peace. There was much discussion in the Israeli govt how to manage the West Bank in regards to having defensible borders for Israel against Jordan. Rather than absorbing the West Bank from Jordan as part of Israel and offering the population Israeli citizenship it was decided to pursue the 2 state solution AND create settlements within the West Bank. Overtime these settlement have grown significantly and continue to expand. I think in hindsight Israel should have just taken all of West Bank from Jordan and offered everyone citizenship. Most likely, they would have lived like all the other 2 million Muslims in Israel today....
A 2 state solution is incompatible with building settlements in what is supposed to be the other state.
@@MalcolmBlk There never was another state. This is land previously administered by Jordan and under Israel control in response to the 6 day war since 1967. 2/3 of the land went to Jordan in 1948. Ownership of the other 1/3 (The West Bank) was never agreed upon in 1948..
@JDMB001 I think you misunderstood my comment. If Israel decided to pursue the 2 state solution after 1968 in good faith, then they wouldn't have decided to build settlements on the territory in question. The 2 decisions are not compatible with each other. A pursuit of a 2 state solution means, at minimum, a willingness by Israel to allow another state in the west bank, because no sane person will consider the gaza strip alone as sufficient territory for the number of palestinians. The exact territory and borders may be in question and undetermined, but they are certainly not up to Israel alone to decide. However, by building settlements on the territory of West Bank, Israel made the borders decision by itself, creating "facts on the ground" and signalling that no compromise will be made. With the continued expansion of the settlements, Israel simply further alienated the Palestinians and discouraged serious talks about a 2 state solution.
@@MalcolmBlk I understand your point however there is flip side to that coin. The Palestinian Authority never wanted a 2 state solution ever since 1948,. Especially under Yasser Arafat leading the PLO in the 60s and 70s. They had many opportunities to create a Palestinian State since 1948 but always declined wanting a complete removal of Israel instead. Hamas since 1987 is the same, it's in their charter to destroy Israel. Following the 6 day war in 1967, Israel wanted to control the West bank as a buffer against Jordan. They returned Golan Heights to Syria and the Sinai desert to Egypt in return for peace. Jordan never signed an agreement hence the progressive settlements in the West bank since 1967. Remember the West Bank was occupied by Jordan before. The West Bank was never an independent state.
@JDMB001 I agree that the PA/Hamas didn't want a 2 state solution. What I'm saying is Israel didn't really want it either, not since 1968 at least. Saying Israel made the decision to pursue a 2 state solution in 1968 would not be correct because their actions have not aligned with such a decision.
What I feel is lost in the discussion of settlers is placing jewish people in settlements in occupied lands and essentially on the front lines. If that isn't the use of humans as shields, I don't know what is.
