Aloha Alex, I usually don't comment. That being said, I want to let you know that you have helped me in my aquatic hobby. Mahalo (Thank You). I am 62 and have been keeping aquatic critters since I was 9 years old! I also wanted to say that I pray for your health and healing. Be well my friend. I am from Hawai'i ( The Big Island) now living in Silverdale, WA. and wanted to say, THANK YOU!
Hi! Me too! I'm 67 and have kept fish since I was about 10! Love this site!
@waynemaffit5931 thank you very kindly for your thoughtful words and support my friend! Also, I'm sure I can learn from you as well, so please don't hesitate to share your observations or knowledge as well! Welcome to Washington, neighbor, also haha. Aloha!
Cheers to you both my fishy friends!
I love that you guys found Alex he's a badass glad to have some guys in their sixties supporting a local guy
Wish we had healthy, affordable fish at the shops I visit.
Thank you for sharing .
Sad. I wish you did also!
You have a great calming voice for all your voiceovers! Plus, solid fishtory! I always come here for info on different species. Thank you for what you do.
Wow, thank you! I'm honored
My favorite cheap tetra are the black neons. Lots of personality for a dither fish.
Excellent video. It drives me nuts when people think that only rare super expensive fish are worth keeping.
Agreed! Often the best Fish are available because... well, they're the best fish!
2cents!
Glad to see you looking so much better!
Taken* haha thanks 😊
You are fantastic. I just found you, and I am going to be a lifelong subscriber. Youve truly found your calling. Thanks.
Welcome aboard! 🙏 I am so glad you found this nerdy little fish community! Please ask questions, and feel free to share and educate others with what you know, as well. We are all here as equals and here to learn 👍 😊
@@Fishtory Thanks so much. Wish you continued success.
Thanks for sharing brother! You’ve been pumping out fish vids like crazy lately, keep it up!
I'm trying haha
Just got some sparkling Gouramis for under $5 here in Toronto. They’re so smart, inquisitive and have obvious personalities. Amazing nano fish!
Those are a great find! Very cool
All very nice picks!
I wasnt ready to see the whole thing... but i couldn't resist. I wish i get some tetras. Thank u.
Haha thank YOU!
If it was not for your videos, on aquasoils on softwater, and effects it has on ph and kh... i would have walked away from this hobby... everything i have read about the nitrogen cycle made no sense to me when my ph was under 6 with no readable kh... i thought something was very wrong... now i understand more. Now, i hope again in trying to figure out the way forward. I have watched allot of stuff on youtube... NO ONE explain everything like you do. I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart, for all the efforts! You are truly a fresh breeze in this hobby. I am learning so much. Thank You !!!
So Glad to hear that! ( well the last part anyhow)... I felt the exact same way about the cycle below 6ph also
Lemon tetras, purple metae tetras, emerald dwarf danios and five banded barbs should be there too! Agree cherry barbs are so underrated, mine are super red
I agree those fish besides lemon tetras all cost me 7 dollars or so though... but yes! All great selections for people 👍
@@Fishtory ah cool! They're all €3-5 each here in Ireland. I just assumed they'd be cheaper in the US 😕
Alex! Great list. Regarding your top choice, I think viewers would be fascinated to find out that the Black, Red & Yellow Fanthom tetras are actually all different species (not just color morphs). I know I was surprised to learn that!
Oh totally... the yellow also, and even some of the "skirt" tetras are just collection points with unique phenotypes, that get caught as by-catch. Seriously the rare hyphessobrycon species I've found mixed with skirt, bleeding heart, phantom and Silvertip or lemon tetras...is wild...at least 6 species even just via big box pet stores!
Great point. Thank you 😊
Yay more gold! ❤ thanks alex! ❤
excellent work, thank you.
Just found your channel, very informative and entertaining. Just finished your video about history of betta 😊
Welcome aboard! Thanks for joining us! 🙏
I just joined your channel because I appreciate the scientific knowledge you have, as well as your videos. Thank you for describing the disease that Pearl Gouramis often have. I chose to buy a different fish instead; but I was so impressed that, though you don’t know me, you gave me the down low on them; when you didn’t have to
Oh of course. Everyone is equal in my eyes, I kinda have to beg for funding to do this full time, unfortunately- but I want to reach everyone, members, subscribers or not.
But thank you for joining and helping the channel and me, spread knowledge through the hobby! I'm always learning and the hobby always evolves and changes. Again, welcome 🙏 and thank you 😊
Awesome list!
Awesome content!
Glad you enjoyed it!
right on, thank you
You bet!
Great video, great list of great fish. I vote kuhli loaches for the win 😁
Good choice!
Love all of your content!
Aw thanks my friend!
Thank you Alex 😊💌💙🩵💚
Thank YOU
Great video as always. Bot really unto this aspect of the hobby. But really like seeing other options.
Agreed. I pay like double or triple the retail price, if the fish are quality genetics and or healthy. Like dansfish... but I get new hobbyists and some folks on super tight budgets, may want to hear that a $5 fish and a $50 fish can be just as fulfilling to watch or spawn.
Thank you. I didn't know Rasboras were that small.
I'm so happy to see you upbeat and feeling better!
Yes! Thank you!
Some of them are teeny tiny!
@@CatFish107
I started fishkeeping during covid, one tank led to 5 LOL. And the idea of a nano tank makes me happy. I might do a planted tank with Rasboras. They'll probably look great with all that greenery in the tank.
@@tessw9744 haha same I started in early 2023, now have 7 tanks 😂
Thanks, Alex!! Always enjoy a good deal!!
Any time!
Moenkhausia pittieri are stunning, I had them in a messy overpopulated tank in my teen, till this day I remembered the complete name specie, and was surprise to see them appearing in that list. They are not vcommon, never saw those fishes again in a shop or anywhere since then
They are rarely bred for the hobby, but are now "invasive" to new places all around the amazon River basin in Peru and Colombia, but we're endemic to lake Valencia in Venezuela originally
Those Pencilfish 😍😍😍
I know! I can't believe they are so affordable too
I'm currently keeping a school of Chinese Gold Barbs, and I'm loving them.
Oh neat. I haven't kept those ever
@@Fishtory I have a group of 6 in a 20 long and they do great. They're comfortable in that 65-75 degree range so I don't need a heater, and they'll eat anything I throw in the tank. Mine are about 2.5", but they're a chunky fish.
I hadn't seem them in a local store in 20+ years, so I was shocked to see them. And they were only $2.50.
Love me some 5$ fish!!! Means you can get a nice school!!!
Right?!
Yay! Always exciting to get here on time 😁 great topic, crazy how cheap we are accustomed to seeing fish sold
Right?! Very true
The rosie red minnow is a really neat fish and they're cheap. Ive also raised fathead minnows from the bait shop
Oh great suggestions! I don't get those locally in the PNW, but most the USA can probably get at least 2 or 3 great species as live bait! Hmmm perhaps I need a video on that whole topic hahaha. Thank you in advance, if I use that
@@Fishtory if I can help you out with that let me know. You're like an encyclopedia already but still
Love this video! ❤ Keep making awesome content Alex
Thank you! Will do!
I just got 10 flame tetras today! I ordered them from Imperial Tropicals. I saw your tour of their fish farm when I was trying to find a place to order fish from.
Oh yeah! Great choice. Enjoy those beautiful fish!!!
I've definitely been eyeing the diamond tetras recently. Such pretty little guys!
Super Purdy! Kinda pushy. But not violent hehe
For me its hard to beat Zebra Danios for cheap, healthy, and activity in my tank. Love em!
Agreed... also they have many color and fin variations, usually just as affordable. Plus in ponds or filterless tanks, they move enough to keep the water aerated!!! Which is wild, and a trick I've used to keep more fragile fish mixed with them
@@Fishtory Thats a great tip! Thanks!
Some of my all time favorite cheap (under $5) fish are most definitely guppies and endlers, mollies (black mollies are super cheap at chain stores), swordtails and platies (got some brick swords for like $3 each at Petco), and white cloud mountain minnows are super cheap and HARDY.
All amazing selections
Some of those that I have that are around $5. Florida Flagfish. Sparkling Gourami. Bristlenose Pleco.
Oooo nice ones! If I could get those for 5 here... I'd have more lol
@@Fishtory I get mine online because the local pet stores usually do not carry what I am looking for. Ebay for the Florida Flagfish. Aqua Huna for the others. My eventual goal is small scale breeding for sale at my local pet store or for online sales.
I'm ready to add some fish to my 10 gallon tank and next month there's a local fish expo. Good timing. I'll go look out for these and see if I can get a few.
Best of luck my friend
One of the interesting things with this list is to see how different the cost is in different parts of the world. No way you get the clown killifish or the diamond tetra for the equivalent to 5 dollars here. With that being said: all or prices are including tax, always. I live in the north of Europe :)
My own cheap favorites: sparkling gourami, phantom tetras, rosy tetras, zebra danio, strawberry rasbora,
Oh yes it is fascinating
All great picks . My thing is that I limit myself to $5 bucks when I buy fish and , as you have shown so well , you can get great fish at that price or less . Breed them and they become even cheaper for you . If I could ever buy a Pseudepiplatys annulatus Killifish for five bucks I’d jump on that like a big dog . In my backwater town I’ve never seen any but , oh well huh ? Great video Son of William . I like your style .
Thank you. I too love your point of view on fish. Haha. Moonlight aquatics. Com code "FISHTORY10" is a spot to get the clown killies for 4 to 6 dollars depending on time of year, but shipping Is a beast unfortunately
@@Fishtory I might have to take a little drive .Dan’s Fish in Sheridan Wyoming is only a two hour drive from me . I can drive there and back for the same price in gas he charges to ship . He has everything !
@@user-xu1qf5sw6h oh totally! That's what I would do if I were you :D
@user-xu1qf5sw6h I think he has folks order online and then he allows call ahead pickups, last I was aware. "Alex" should also get you 5 or 10% off at checkout
@@Fishtory oooh . . . even better , a discount ! I just looked at his website and he has annulatus for $10 bucks a pop . I can live with that .
Zebra Danios are another very cost effective fish. Best in groups of at least 6
Yes they are! And in a pond or filterless tank, they actually swim enough to move water around and oxygenate it!
Herrrrrrrrrrrrrrre's Alex
In my country fish are dear to buy in the UK & Alex have you seen any little gray men yet cause you would be good to have a change over.from fish to aliens from OUTER space.
🎉
Bro I only clicked on this video for the eel on the thumbnail just to find out it was clickbait😭😭😭
Oh yeah sorry.... he was totally clickbait. He was 450 dollars at Aquarium coop 🤣 .... with tax... he's only 100 times more expensive though! Oi
I was so confused because I have been in the freshwater hobby for so long and the only eel-like fish I could think of that was even remotely near that price was a ropefish😭😭😭 I thought maybe some albino variant or smthin because I recognised all the fish on the thumbnail😂😂😂 I don't even know if the eel in the thumbnail is freshwater because I mostly do nano tanks😮 th you clearing that up tho👍
Hi, I've been looking for fish species that would be happy in a iwagumi and couldn't find any videos on the subject. My ember tetras don't seem to like the open water and want more cover, so i moved them to a dutch style tank and they a much happier.
Ahhh great topic idea! ...rummynose tetra, neon tetras or lambchop rasboras when in large numbers ( over 20) Congo tetra, danios of all sorts, and most barbs are all great options
In NJ, even panda cories are around $10 if not more.
Whoa! That's pricey. Are aneaus and albinos that price? I mean you could buy them from Moonlight Aquatics linked in the description, use the 10% off code and even though shipping is 40 to 50 bucks... make a big order so it's worth While, you could save money in the long run... or split the shipping cost with a friend perhaps
No guppy nor endler in thumbnail? That has to be engagement / rage bait.
Muahahaha and I showed a 500 dollar eel as well... gotta try and outsmart thr algorithm... but deliver what's promised in the titles
🐟☑️
Hello, I am a newish follower. Love your channel. I have a question about a plant and substrate. What is the best way to message you?
Right here in the comments
@@Fishtory I want to carpet my tank with Monte Carlo. My substrate is sand only. Can this be accomplished with root tabs?
@Tatted_Librarian so I have done this, with monte Carlo that was fresh in a pot ... as in , don't use tissue cultured M.C. ... it's roots are too fragile and won't convert usually without co2.
Next you need high light. So a fluval 3.0 planted plus, twinstar s or ea series... or cheap amazon. Com cree flood light LED around 5500 to 7000kelvin with 6500k being ideal... ( that's only 12.50 or 15 bucks a light) , next you want to put the root tabs 2 inches or 1.5 inches into the sand in a grid like a checker board with one every 5 to 7 inches in a row and then a row that alternates in the gaps set back another 4 or 5 inches, then repeate.... so there's some every few inches. .... now this works much better with aquasoil or organic potting soil under an inch or two of sand...but it can* be done with just the sand and bright bright lights... also you'll want some water flowing via filtration or powerhead/air stone.... and then it's a waiting game . Also consider googling " the dry start method". That's another trick that can help/work. Good luck!
@@FishtoryAwesome! Thanks so much.
Where I live, big store, parasite ridden neons go for 5 usd, and they are by far the cheapest. :(
Don't ask me what equipment such as lights go for...
Yeah that is true for a lot of parts of the USA and Australia unfortunately. I'd recommend buying Fish Online in that case. Use discount codes, and if you know any fish lovers, split the shipping costs with them and order a big box o fish.
I wish the chilli rasbora was under $5 here 😩
Buy online when you are ready to drop over 100$ and you can save a lot of money sometimes ...especially if you share shipping costs and have a friend order something too!
I just got some green severum for $5 at my local fish store…
Oh that's a rad deal... for everyone but the local sevrum breeders haha
Khuli loaches are not 3.99$ anymore atleast this year in 3 different stores khuli loaches are now 6.99$
Well I filmed a store where they are 3.99 here... and online ( which folks can order) they're also that price or 4.99 max from my affiliate links). But prices vary around the country
Eques pencil fish
Needs somebody like you to study their reproductive habits.
I have been casually... they behave very very complexily and it all depends on plants or how many fish are present... I may do a video on it sometime soon
Great informative video! I just purchased some chili rasboras a few days ago. They are babies and very small. Heal quickly!!! ❤️🩹
Awesome!
