There are always exceptions. To refute the RBI argument for example. In 1927 Lou Gehrig had 173 RBI. In 60 of his at bats the bases were just cleared by Babe Ruth.

It definitely exists, it's just not something that's quantifiable, and stat people hate that fact. Maybe one day in the distant future, it will be equatable into WAR, but it doesn't now, and that's why there's wiggle room for voters to elect players on the "character clause" in the hall. David Ortiz giving that speech after the marathon bombing, Derek Jeter making "the flip", even a few nights ago when Adolis Garcia shut Astros fans down with knocking one out of the park. Sure, WPA and other stats may measure some clutch moments, but things players do when not being in the batters' box matters too, like the "our f'ing city" speech. It creates morale that makes other players feel like it's almost fate for them to succeed. The Red Sox only won game 7 of the 2004 ALCS because the previous 3 games made it feel like magic. Give a team that magic feel, and they gain superpowers and rings in the process.

I agree it exists, I just think a lot of people overstate it to the point where they think a guy is guaranteed a hit or magically becomes a .400 avg hitter because he is "clutch". The talent of the batter is a much better indicator of what is most likely going to happen. Morale and confidence are huge parts of Baseball and having good leaders in the club house can elevate a team while having horrible morale can easily sink a team.

I mean there already is a clutch stat I can’t remember what it’s called there’s also a stat that show how much the batter raised or lowered a teams winning percentage

while it might not seem like it, I think clutch hitting is real
I mean mike trout hit for a .087 ba and a 600 ops in his only postseason appearance, while David freese has only hit for an under 800 ops in only 4 of his 14 postseason appearances, and hit for an .864 ops in the same series that trout was in, on the same team (sidenote: one of the 4 below 600 ops appearances was in the wildcard game)
some players just have that competitive edge and don't fold under pressure 🤷

I agree clutch hitting is definitely real, Freese is a post season legend for a reason. I hope Trout can get back to the playoffs to even out his numbers.
