  • Part 2 in this series I removed the roof trim or “tacking strip”. I used a tack lifter I purchased from Walmart for $3, and modified it with a Dremel to fit the channel. Cleaning out the old sealant, I used a pry bar to CAREFULLY lift up on the strip, allowing the tack heads to lift up high enough to get clearance to be grabbed by the tool. Repeat ad nauseum. Part 3 will be removing the next tacked layer which is the cloth and padding, and cleaning up/prepping for installation of new material.

I like the modified tack puller. Think you will need another one to get the bottom tacks out. Those tacks look like they have a bigger head. Definitely going to be difficult and a two handed job with a little hammer help to get the tack puller under the tack head.

Is that another tack strip under the one you removed ?

I’m not sure. I thought there was wood under the metal frame and oval holes so one side would be for racking material and other side of oval for trim piece. But looks like there’s no pattern to the tacks, so until I get more off I’m not sure.

Honestly, I'm not a professional, but that Muslin Roof material is all going bye bye, So I'd be tempted to slide about 6" back from the edge and try and tear the edging out by pulling the muslin and see if the tar, staples and the rest of the business will come out in tact? or at least in 1-2' sections, Maybe even 6' sections. Then when it gets stuck on a tough tack use your pry bar and carefully help it by prying and pulling, without tearing the muslin apart.

typographical error I meant : So I'd be tempted to "SLICE" the muslin and use it to pull the edging away from the wood and metal
