HEY YOU, YES YOU WITH THE SOCKS ON, Add me on Steam @LFXGaming if ya'll ever wanna play some Borderlands. Gonna be playing some The Pre-Sequel Soon but ofc ill always be up for some BL2
The Lyudmila is a reference to a Russian Woman of the same name, who in WW2 had, and still has, the most confirmed kills of any female sniper at over 300.
The Morningstar sniper rifle is also a reference to the Devil, as another name for him is Morningstar. Hyperion is literally calling you Satan. Edit: this is why the flavour text is "A rose by any other name."
The Veruc was my first legendary. My dad and I were playing BL2 for the first time. He took my technical first legendary, the emperor, so we agreed that I could have the next one. The red text cemented it and my dad and I could not stop laughing for about half an hour.
Pre-sequel is an amazing game overshadowed by a modern classic. There's a lot of things I like about pre-sequel, mainly the cryo element, mobility, and vault hunters (Athena and Nisha are fucking awesome). Getting to max level in BL2 is such a massive grind, but there's just more to do at the end. It's a more complete game, I wish there was a way to play as the pre-sequel vault hunters in BL2. There would have to be a lot of skill and level overhauls
I just finished a playthrough for the first time in like 10 years and the game is soooooooo much better than I remember it's kinda just held back because the story is pretty meh but I had a pretty fun time and will probably start another run...maybe a claptrap this time
Borderlands 2 is the perfect combination of silly easter eggs and references that dont completely take you out of whats supposed to be a mostly serious story
The balance between a great story and just a fun game with lots of easter eggs is amazing, it's a shame borderlands 3 didn't get quite the same treatment
37:30 I belive that the achievement references the song by limp bizkit rollin because it says keep rollin rollin rollin but I'm not for sure but it did come out before bl2
There is a very hidden reference that i am not surprised is not on this list. The quest "Wildlife Preservation" is referred to as "Bird is the Word" in the code and this is not shown in game in anyway but can be viewed by using Gibbed File Editor and viewing the quest.
also! in the mercenary day headhunter pack, the “open” icon that pops up in front of the loot gift boxes says “what’s this?” instead of open, referencing The Nightmare Before Christmas! that one made me smile when I discovered it ngl. great video homie :)
Pretty sure the Hyperion robots saying "DELETED!" is a Homestar Runner reference, rather than Doctor Who. For those unfamiliar reading this, "DELETED!" is a common quote stated by character Strong Bad in the "sbemail" series of shorts. Strong Bad himself is a direct reference to the enemy team known as "The Strong Bads" from Tag Team Wrestling on the NES.
Zero has a head called "Lord of Blades, which is a reference to the "Queen of Blades" from Starcraft. The head is basically identical to the decal/icon for the Zerg.
I was initially suprised aswell, but some are just one line like "This challenge is a reference to this book/movie/game" and can be covered in like 5 seconds.
i distinctly remember a fresh prince easter egg where if your playing as Zer0 and you flip a car he'll say the first 17 syllables of the fresh prince intro
Gwen's Head can be found randomly in one of five locations in The Dust. It respawns every time you load into the map. The name "Gwen's Head" is a reference to Gwyneth Paltrow, who played the character whose head is supposedly in the box in Se7en. If you missed the reference, you're really young: Yeah, no, I'm probably older than your mom. The Phantom Tollbooth: a really fun children's book with lots of adventure and lots of puns. LOTS of puns. You missed one. There's an NPC named Michael Mamaril that sometimes shows in one of various places in Sanctuary. Michael was named after a young man who died of cancer at age 22. He was a big fan of the first game, and playing it was a bright spot in an otherwise tragic life. After his passing his friend told Gearbox about this, and they decided to put him into BL2 as an NPC that hands out gifts.
He's older than I am, and I'm 20, and I understood that reference, as Cap'n Murica would say... so you're like 60-70 cause my mom had me in her 50' so you'd be between about 68-80ish from 18 to in your thirties😂😂😂 if fact I understood all of the references so kinda feel the joke is just invalid either way 😂😂😂
There’s a Sopranos reference when you flood the construction site in Opportunity. Handsome Jack says “once you’ve had Prime Rib for free, it’s hard to go back to sucking down Hamburgers for cash”. In the Meadowlands episode, the cop says to Melfi’s date: “You have Prime Rib at home. Why are you going out for burgers?”
I believe gaiges klatuu barada nikto line is actually referencing army of darkness as it's the three words ash must speak before taking the necronomicon, or it will raise the army of the dead. Gauge is a mechromancer which is a play on necromancer.
Another major A Song of Ice and Fire reference you missed was in the Commander Lilith DLC, a little bit forward and to the right of the entrance when you first get to the map, there's a tiny frozen cave you can walk into with a sword impaled in a pile of bones. Interacting with the sword causes a wolf howl sound effect to play and spawns in a skag enemy named Ghost who drops a Blue/Purple incendiary dmg element Relic called Winter Is Over.
You missed Kreig's Dukes of Hazzard reference "Looks like them Duke Boys are in a peck of trouble!" (when making a vehicle fly a good distance), which is a reference to the "Waylonisms" spoken by Waylon Jennings in the Dukes of Hazzard tv show, most often when the scene would freeze for commercial break. You missed a TMNT reference "cut them no slack" said by Tanis, and the "Cut 'Em No Slack" achievement for killing the mutants in order of appearance are references to the intro song from the first TMNT cartoon series.
If I’m being honest, it’s not too weird that Gaige has a lot of MLP references around her character. She’s a quirky high school girl. But yea no doubt one developer probably didn’t have to look up any of references, on account of probably already knowing them
Huge respect for making this video. I search for it every year to see if someone has done it. I feel like bl2 has the most references of any videogame. A few I think you missed (which I'm guessing means they're missing off the wiki) Zer0s skin called dark night might be a reference to batman as it drops from the same source as the other batman skins. Likely the same for all the core characters. One of the bioshock ee characters, lil sis drops the little Evie. A reference to eve, the source of bioshocks plasmids. During the Tina dlc the handsome sourcer says "Ho Dum Shiva" referencing Indiana Jones and Temple of Doom where the witchdoctor says the same before removing a beating heart. Zer0 has a portal turret head from poker night called "Are you still there" a line the turrets say when losing line of sight to the player. Mad respect man, learned a lot. I can't believe the 'badass' rage comic has been on some nomad shields, played this game to death and never noticed. Great video!
sorry for only just getting to this, but i appreciate it, yeah there is a few i missed so it's great that people are able to put them out there for other people to find! but yeah Borderlands 2 is basically just one big reference to other things i love it.
This was a fun, well done and educational video. I really only knew the musical and film/literature references for the most part given my advanced age. The sheer amount and depth of Doctor Who references were very interesting. Thank you very much for posting.
Im glad to see older people playing video games, im almost finishing high school and i dont get most of the references, since my first language is Portuguese, greetings from brazil. Borderlands made me learn english really fast and in a very fun way, im extremely greatful for the developers for making this game.
Doc mercy's is a mission that references the xcom series in the name, especially when zed is trying to figure out what an alien plasma gun is; like you would try to figure out in xcom.
I may be wrong but there’s also a mission called “The Ice Man Cometh” and I’ve always interpreted that as another It’s always sunny reference “The Day Man Cometh”
I would say that it's more likely that -- given that the dialogue content of the quest largely consists of Claptrap making unfunny ice puns and explaining them -- I believe that it's a reference to Arnold Schwarzenegger's portrayal of Mister Freeze in the Joel Schumacher Batman and Robin, where he makes repeatedly unfunny ice puns (many of which are used in the quest dialogue, like "chill out"). One of Arnold's lines is -- verbatim -- "The Iceman Cometh" which was (as codenamegadge points out) in and of itself a reference to the Eugene O'Neill play.
I might be overthinking this one, but one of Krieg's heads is called Breathe Deep. It could be a reference to Dinotopia, an older book series and TV adaptation, because the main phrase people use to greet eachother in it is 'Breathe deep, and seek peace.'
Not sure if you can truly count this as a reference, but it is still a fun fact considering Orcs Must Die was mentioned. Axton's voice actor, Robert McCollum, also voices the War Mage, the main character of the Orcs Must Die games.
I love seeing references, especially when they are super underground... even more when they are waved into the story... the idea of "intertextuality" and the dialogue between different medias from different times is fascinating... it gets crazy when a reference is not direct either... it's a 'reference of a reference' that can be traced down into a crazy rabbit hole!
tl:dr; you missed a reference to the _Alien(s)_ franchise and another Gearbox game, _Aliens: Colonial Marines_ , that was in-development at the same time as _Borderlands 2_ in regards to the "Commando" character and the games loading-in screen background icon when starting another session from a previous save. One reference I didn't see mentioned, but I figured out when I first played _Borderlands 2_ was the fact the "Commando" is a Colonial Marine from, you guessed it, from the Alien(s) franchise. His recording you get from his ex-wife and former CO, along with one of the starting skins you get for him subtly reference this, as well. Infact it is heavily implied he served on the USCM Sephora (the ship responding to the distress beacon of the USCM Sulaco 17 months later after the film _Aliens_), before being discharged for whatever his infraction was that had him kicked out. This is also a subtle hint to being the case as around the time of the release of "Borderlands 2" Gearbox, also the developers of _A:CM_ , had pulled a lot of their resources and devs from _Colonial Marines_ and they made hints at their project. I played _A:CM_ before _Borderlands 2_ and picked up on this reference/easter egg as well as the loading screen of the game when you are continuing your game as the titular "arch" was in the style of the title card for the movie _Aliens_ A lot of Gearbox devs who were putting their passion into were disilusioned by having their personnel and budget slashed for _A:CM_ in favor of _Borderlands 2_ project were some of the employees to go on and leave after the massive backlash and lawsuits resulting from the poor launch of _A:CM_ because of the resources _Borderlands 2_ took from them. For many _Alien(s)_ and the game being given the greenlight by both James Cameron, Ridley Scott, and 20th Century Fox was inspiration for a passion-project they felt strongly about.
I think you missed the legendary weapon the Hammer buster which is a reference to gears of wars commonly used locust weapon the hammer burst. The flavor text is also a reference to egoraptors gears of awesome.
The Holy Hand Grenade is also referenced in TTAODK. Some of the knight enemies say, “it’s the Holy Hand Grenade”, when you chuck a ‘nade at them. Ironically, I might have heard it in the Beatdown Bar too(I played both DLC today).
There is a reference to another Gearbox IP Brothers in Arms, on Dahl Abandon, one of unmarked grave will contain a Jakobs rifle called m2828 Thumpson, on flavour text is " A soldier has two families " , which is a quote from Matt Baker " A soldier has two families, those you raised and those you raise hell with"
this was awesome! a lot i didn’t know and a few i did, im surprised that back the the future wasn’t in lol. but it gives me more to do when i’m bored so thanks for this! keep up the great videos man!
The loaders and Gaige make a reference to the movie iRobot with chris beater. Loaders will say "First law disabled" referencing the 3 laws the robots have to follow. Gaige says "To hell with the first law!" when you summon Deathtrap sometimes.
theres a sykrim in borderlands 3 with the new-u stashion saying "your awake. you where trying to cross the border right?" or something along thous lines.
What's really weird about all these references, is that many of them seem more recent than the game itself... Like the Nolan Batman series feels like it came out more recently than Borderlands 2. Regardless, great video. Also, the phrase ceci n'est pas une sniper rifle at 1:02:07 is a reference to The Treachery of Images by Belgian surrealist painter René Magritte, where the original phrase was "Ceci n'est pas une pipe"
AAAA I KNEW ONE THAT WASNT IN THE VIDEO!! In the Tina DLC, during the side mission where you have to raise skeletons to find that one guy's brother, the animation for the skeletons rising is jerky. While this seems weird, it's a reference to Jason and the Argonauts, in which the stop motion animation for the skeletons is only 24 fps.
6:00 I think this could also be more specifically a reference to Mr Freeze in Batman and Robin, in the movie Mr Freeze (as portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger) at some point says “The Ice Man Cometh!” And then proceeds to start freezing people with his freeze Ray while simply telling them to “chill” like the description text.
Chop Suey probably isn’t a reference to the song by system of a down, as much as i love it. probably just a reference to the asian dish, chop suey meaning odds and ends, it’s a rather short quest where you just get moxxi to sponsor you so it’s probably that
As with 1:13:48 when you finish the challenge where you have to disarm all of the mines around Tiny Tina's base she will have a voice like where she will tell you that you "have the skills to pay the bills" It's kind of incredible how many references are listed here in the comments that were missed in such a massive video. The gamme, of course, also contains just an endless train of other puns and other wordplay. It's insane just how much love and passion was put into the writing for this game's every line.
I have never seen enyone point this out before, so I wonder if I'm the first to find this. There is a skin for Salvador called "Lord of Rage", the name itself and the "brand of sacrifice" drawn on the shirt are references to Kentaro Miura's "Berserk" manga.
The Iceman Cometh is actually a reference to Arnold Schwarzeneggers performance as Mr. Freeze in Batman and Robin. He says to police in the movie "chill" multiple times. He also has a line saying "Beware, the iceman cometh".
You fail for missing the greatest video game reference. When Claptrap screams, "NOOOOOOO!!" after he unlocks the door to gain access to Hero's Pass, it is taken directly from Castlevania Symphony of the Night when you defeat Dracula, he screams "Nooooo!!" in the exact same inflection and tone.
In the Woddlegobbler DLC, there's an oven in the kitchen area that has a blue Cristal in it, a reference to Breaking Bad. In the Tina DLC, there's a side quest that has three characters you kill called Sir Boil, Sir Mash, and Sir Stew. A reference to a Lord of the Rings line by Samwise that goes something like, "Potatoes! Boil 'em. Mash 'em. Stick 'em in a stew."
Great compilation! You missed one of my favorites. There is a challenge called "A Nugget of Purest Green!" A reference from the Blackadder 2 episode "Money."
Something I'm supprised wasn't in written text, Chulainn, it's named after an irish folk hero (Cú Chulainn) and its flavor text (Riastrad) is a reference to a battle rage he enters that is attributed to his early death and featuring a raven on its magazine, which was used to signify his death (one landed on his shoulder after he died, proving he had died) and as a symbol of unexpected deaths.
1:06:13 this is a reference to the emperor’s new groove when izmha (sorry I don’t know if that’s the correct spelling) says to cronk “you know, for him” in reference to emperor kuzcos poison
41:00 Speed Speed is a 1994 American action film directed by Jan de Bont in his feature film directorial debut. The film stars Keanu Reeves, Dennis Hopper, Sandra Bullock, Joe Morton, and Jeff Daniels. Its story revolves around a bus that is rigged by a terrorist to explode if its speed falls below 50 miles per hour. not ever thing is a blood reference to the simsons
The "In The Hall of The Mountain King" reference could probably also be a reference to the German 1931 film "M" by Fritz Lang, where the killer whistles it when he's about to strike
Ive been playing borderlands games with my dad for *_YEAAARRSS_* and Ive somehow NEVER noticed... theres a Kreig head where he tapes a fucking chicken to his head?
I do belive Salvador has a line during his Gunzerking he can say "Daka Daka Daka" that is also a Warhammer 40K refference as Orks used to reffer to their guns going Daka.

The Lyudmila is a reference to a Russian Woman of the same name, who in WW2 had, and still has, the most confirmed kills of any female sniper at over 300.

A lot of Gearbox devs who were putting their passion into were disilusioned by having their personnel and budget slashed for _A:CM_ in favor of _Borderlands 2_ project were some of the employees to go on and leave after the massive backlash and lawsuits resulting from the poor launch of _A:CM_ because of the resources _Borderlands 2_ took from them. For many _Alien(s)_ and the game being given the greenlight by both James Cameron, Ridley Scott, and 20th Century Fox was inspiration for a passion-project they felt strongly about.
Im sure im not the first one to point it out but 37:33 is a reference to Limp Bizkit
Bro I’m thinking the same thing
Salvador also has a reference to big trouble in little china with his skill all in the reflexes, Kurt Russell's character says it numerous times
Props man. Great video, love that even with such a long video you can keep a sense of humor up throughout
You are mentally unhinged.
A real Borderlands fan
I wouldn't have it any other way 😎
I think you missed the legendary weapon the Hammer buster which is a reference to gears of wars commonly used locust weapon the hammer burst.
There is a reference to another Gearbox IP Brothers in Arms, on Dahl Abandon, one of unmarked grave will contain a Jakobs rifle called m2828 Thumpson, on flavour text is " A soldier has two families " , which is a quote from Matt Baker " A soldier has two families, those you raised and those you raise hell with"
I’m surprised you’re brave enough to include “Fuck yo couch” in all of its uncensored beauty.
THE PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW
this was awesome! a lot i didn’t know and a few i did, im surprised that back the the future wasn’t in lol. but it gives me more to do when i’m bored so thanks for this! keep up the great videos man!
Oh lord that's a lot of references
MY FAVORITE
Also amazing work on a good video, mang!
TY bro appreciate it!
1:01:50 i believe the red text is also in reference to a famous painting called "The treachery of images"
Bro that shan of the dead scene you put in has me rolling 😂😂😂😂😭😭😭😭😭❤️
The loaders and Gaige make a reference to the movie iRobot with chris beater. Loaders will say "First law disabled" referencing the 3 laws the robots have to follow. Gaige says "To hell with the first law!" when you summon Deathtrap sometimes.
theres a sykrim in borderlands 3 with the new-u stashion saying "your awake. you where trying to cross the border right?" or something along thous lines.
Glad this game still ain't dead honestly, probably one of the best looter shooters designed to this day.
It's Still My Favourite Looter Shooter 9 Years After I Started Playing It!
I was waiting for someone to do this for years! Nice job man.
"Das Boot" may also be a reference to the 1981 War movie "Das Boot" from Germany, which got nominated for 6 Oscars
Chop Suey probably isn’t a reference to the song by system of a down, as much as i love it. probably just a reference to the asian dish, chop suey meaning odds and ends, it’s a rather short quest where you just get moxxi to sponsor you so it’s probably that
As with 1:13:48 when you finish the challenge where you have to disarm all of the mines around Tiny Tina's base she will have a voice like where she will tell you that you "have the skills to pay the bills"
It's kind of incredible how many references are listed here in the comments that were missed in such a massive video. The gamme, of course, also contains just an endless train of other puns and other wordplay. It's insane just how much love and passion was put into the writing for this game's every line.
Probably one of the most important videos on RUclips.
Also for Minecraft references, I think the dwarfs when mining in the tiny Tina campaign say something about “damn creepers”
13:17 in brazil the movie is actually called "fasten your seatbelts, the pilot is missing" wich is way more appropriate lmao
I have never seen enyone point this out before, so I wonder if I'm the first to find this.
There is a skin for Salvador called "Lord of Rage", the name itself and the "brand of sacrifice"
drawn on the shirt are references to Kentaro Miura's "Berserk" manga.
I love the voices you make for every quote and name
cracked sash is another diablo one
0:59 Why did I hear the scene with presents from first Harry Potter.
"How many are there?"
"260 counted them myself"
The Iceman Cometh is actually a reference to Arnold Schwarzeneggers performance as Mr. Freeze in Batman and Robin. He says to police in the movie "chill" multiple times. He also has a line saying "Beware, the iceman cometh".
perfect second monitor content while playing through the story on a new character
New mic settings are good
@@carryme5772a true borderlands fan 💪
8:19 name the last story mission in lilith DLC
The blockhead shotgun red text is likely a nod to terraria as well as one of the blips the game can have is “also try Minecraft”
This video was definitely worth the sub good job
1:13:46 - TIny Tina can say "You got the skillz, to pay the billz" when u disarm her pink bombs in Tundra Express
Claptrap saying “they’re coming out of the wall sphincters” is a reference to halo 3’s level Cortana where the doors look like sphincters
Krig is literally a walking reference 😂
As a long time borderlands fanatic thank you honestly I never knew most of these and its nice to hear most of these
1:06:13 this is a reference to the emperor’s new groove when izmha (sorry I don’t know if that’s the correct spelling) says to cronk “you know, for him” in reference to emperor kuzcos poison
41:00 Speed
Speed is a 1994 American action film directed by Jan de Bont in his feature film directorial debut.
37:30 should have been Limp Bizkit’s song, “Rollin’” but otherwise a very well thought out video, thank you for making it
You missed Krieg's pokemon reference where when he hits himself with his melee he can yell CONFUSION
You should definitely do a video for bl3. I get if you don’t want to considering the humor in that game
i thought that the boss fight against Angel was a reference to the chaos witch quelaag from dark souls
The Pitchfork sniper rifle is a reference to Randy Pitchford, with its skin even having the suits of a deck of cards, often being related to magic
The "In The Hall of The Mountain King" reference could probably also be a reference to the German 1931 film "M" by Fritz Lang, where the killer whistles it when he's about to strike
Ive been playing borderlands games with my dad for *_YEAAARRSS_*
and Ive somehow NEVER noticed...
theres a Kreig head where he tapes a fucking chicken to his head?
19:42 while it is a reference to The day the earth stood still, I believe Gaige says it as a reference to Army of darkness
Or the evil dead franchise in general. It's literally the words spoken to release evil from the necronomicon ex mortis.
I do belive Salvador has a line during his Gunzerking he can say "Daka Daka Daka" that is also a Warhammer 40K refference as Orks used to reffer to their guns going Daka.
52:05 you forgot about the little evie witch can be given by little sis if you don't damage her but kill bubbles.
so did we forget the citizens of sanctuary knocking is the rhythm the master hears at all times
"Amazing loot ahead is referencing players abilities to warn and help each other"
Yea umm... totally... yea... definitely what i see it used for
