Everyone was thinking he was gonna be some psychopath genocidal maniac of blasphemous proportions, but he's just a crusader of the golden order that was abandoned by Marika and wiped from history just because he had a birth defect that triggered Marika's serpentphobia. He's awesome, my favorite fight is still Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame. Messmer is a close second though
The remembrance says something the original sin being connected to Messmer. Was that why fire was so taboo in the Golden order? Because Marika was so ashamed of her son being born with a fire serpent that could destroy everything? What's weird though is that Messmer's fire is laced with shadow, something the scadutree was cursed with from what I recall correctly(if you read the remembrance for the scadutree avatar).
The Abyss was my favorite section of the game. I don't even want to go back because I killed everything and it's just empty now 😂
@@thesnatcher3616I wanna believe that the serpents were grafted onto him at a very young age maybe even when we was born. I know there’s no evidence of that but I really don’t like how they’re just his pets like that’s cool but what are they exactly? Where did they come from? They look like they were drove into him or something idk
@@futurecar6750 The Serpents in this game in general are just really fascinating. Maybe his true form is literally just a snake(similar to one of the npcs of volcano manor), since he constantly shapeshifts to an fro in the second phase, and hitting the snake heads does damage to him also. And it could be like a Jekyl and Hyde situation where the snake side of him and his humanoid side have conflicting interests and one takes over depending on the situation.
Dark souls 3 was one of my favorite too
What about general radahn? I love him in elden ring
18 INCHES OF MESSMER
sick
The winged snakes are there to sooth his agony (from the base serpant)and give him company. The winged serpents are even referred to as "wise companions". Also he seems to be on pretty good terms with his soldiers. Even when they rebelled against him he mourned one of the traitors as a dear friend. I love this boss dude.
messers intro cutscene is the best they have made, the silence to that fucking snake staring at me was such a good moment
*Mongrel intruder*
Legit actually made me scared. It screamed "main villain" vibes.
Don't swear wtf
You could tell Messmer can see you through the snake when he says "You're Tarnished, it Seemeth"
The snake is staring into your soul and it's a direct offshoot of Messmer's body.
Messmer is 100% the best boss in the DLC.
I'd say he's just behind the gank with your ex allies, and CURSE YOU BAYLE!
A HAIL OF HARPOONS!!!!
WITH EVERY LAST DROP OF MY BEING!!!
Between Bayle and Messmer for me, VERY close though. The Final Boss (despite the reskin), Metyr, and Midra were top tier additions to the roster as well. Holy shit, Metyr's attacks blew my mind!!
And bail dragon too
Messmer's remembrance is sad asf
Indeed it is sad ❤
Sad like ur mum?
Why
@@WalidAlia-jf6hiMarika, his mother, sent him and a bunch of soldiers into the land of shadows for what they thought was a crusade, and that she would come back and take them back home. She never planned to bring them back, she just left all of them in there to forget about them, have them dispose of her enemies, while disposing of them too. Abandoning her own son because of his snake birth defect
@@WalidAlia-jf6hi every child Marika and Radagon had together were cursed , poor Messmer received the shortest end of that stick compared to his brother and sister
This DLC ruled man. Bloodborne is my favorite Souls game but this DLC feels like it again!! Rellana=Maria,Putrescent Knight=Orphan of Kos,Metyr=Rom,very awesome
Ah, I see you also noticed the Rom reference. Those side swipes reminded me of that too.
Boss lore is always the difference between a good and bad. Sekiro has amazing boss lore, Elden ring does too.
Exactly that’s why the lore is amazing and sekiro is a amazing game too ❤❤❤
Seeing as how its the only way to learn about these characters in these games they damn well better be good.
what about ds3 and all the others???
Wait so if the boss doesn’t have good lore it’s bad? Like in general or what u mean fam
Sekiro has the least interesting lore in all fromsoft games though
Unironically, I find Messmer to be one of my favorite bosses lore wise. I also found personally his words when he kills you each time don't really seem like a gloat to me. There's too much gloom and the way he says it, like it's just a means to an end and he'll just return to his brooding again with no purpose.
he sounds so depressed when he says "in the embrace of messmers flame" when he kills us. it does make sense since hes accepted his death and oblivion. "embrace thine oblivion, as shall i"
Messsmer also hates his own flame, as stated in the lore description of his flame incantation. He hates it and wishes it would go away. He's also so depressed because he's intentionally trying to make everyone hate him so as to distract them from Marika back in the lands between
What sold Messmer for me is the jar hospital under the castle. Not only did he bring vengeance to the regime that ethnically cleansed his mother's people for religious reasons. He also tried to help the mutilated and deformed survivors, if you can call them that.
Also establishing the timeline of the Crusade and clearly stating that he grew up with Radahn and they were friends is just a chef's kiss.
What item description is it stated that Radahn and Mesmer were friends?
I'd also like to know, I'm always down for Radahn lore
I think you confused Messmer being Radahn’s friend with Gaius. Commander Gaius was an Albinauric and Radahn’s friendly rival.
@@kingjohn8980Commander Gaius‘ remembrance and Gaius‘ sorcery “Blades of Stone“ prove Gaius and Messmer were friends of Radahn and acted like his elder brothers
where was the part where Messmer brought vengance to the people that purged his Mother's kind?
Messmer was awesome. I actually felt bad killing him and I thought the fight was hard but fair. The final boss on the other hand...yeah we'll just pretend that's not a thing.
Also, if you appreciate lore and story, I also thought the battle with Leda and the other NPC's was quite awesome even though it was a pvp gank fight. Shoutout to Bayle as well who has history with Placidusax and certainly Rellana as well (who is implied to be Rennala's sister).
Feel the absolut Same way!! I Loved this fight and Love His Char. And It's so sad... My Natural "i can fix him" worked Overtime 🤣🤣
lol 😂 yes 😂
Oh lord, imagine Messmer opening his door just to see and army of fangirls ready to try to fix him? (I'd be 100% part of that army)
Bahaha 😅😅🤣🤣
He’s fantastic in terms of lore. I felt like taking him down was a mercy. It was a similar feeling when I beat Midra. Both of the characters seemed to want their respective suffering to end but didn’t know what to do with their situations. Messmer was an excellent addition to the world of Elden Ring.
Messmer is in my top 3 FromSoft bosses. Up there with Slave Knight Gael and Isshin the Sword Saint. His soundtrack is an absolute banger, his attacks reward aggression and are very satisfying to avoid, and his second phase cutscene may be the best I have ever seen in a FromSoft game
Spear that pierces marika is destined death not fire. Only one who could have done that is Malekith controlled by the Golden Will.
I typed golden will instead of greater but after what we learned about the fingers in the dlc it's not a mistake after all. Two fingers get all their info from their mother (metyr) not from GW directly and she was abandoned by GW (her dad) a long time ago. So the Golden order was fingers just making stuff up the entire time.
@@VincenzoMGREXwait “her dad” ? Wdym by that
@@stannisthemannis4199 metyr rememberence states she's the daughter of greater will
@@VincenzoMGREX this dlc lore is making my head hurt i’ll need an hour video explaining it soon
@@stannisthemannis4199 i recommend Sinclair lore, kosmos and tarnished archeologist.
Messmer to me is a parallel of Morgott, even though abandoned, shunned they still chose to love their family and their home
@JamesCastle-vd1lc spoilers:
Makes me pity Radahn and hate Miquella who has enslaved him
Messmer, Bayle, and the final boss are some of my all time favorites now
same here, one of the reason is that they did not come out of nowhere. all of them got hyped up in-game with npc's, items and even just on the way to them. i loved the other bosses but bosses like rellana and the lion came out of nowhere i did not even know they were out there
@@shini1908 true. That run up to Bayle will live rent free in my mind forever. That was pure Cinema.
I do like the side bosses. But I agree. They were more random but I'm excited to learn about them more
@@RampidWarthogStudios yep but some bosses i dont mind not having much lore or hype, like the giant sunflower it was so cool(the arena too) it was both epic and silly
Agreed
The final boss, is the worst fromsoft boss ever. When multiple moves drop the frame rate to 20fps, it’s not a good boss.
I wonder if rykard cared about messmer so much that he got himself eaten by the great serpent to be more like him
Love Messmer's visuals and thank you for the lore! 100% Banger video!
At least he got the rellanussy
His lore is phenomenal and so is his fight, the one thing I love about his fight is that its hard but very fair. On any of Messmers rise and slam attacks he could easily just follow up with some fast slash or combo string but he has tons of punishable windows and just overall the fight feels like a dance at times. I think he's one of the more fair but challenging Souls bosses I've fought
Crazy you didn't mention Melania blade of miquella. She had epic lore and an even better boss fight! Beats gale for me. :)
I didn't think a demigod could have more mommy issues than Morgott and yet here we are. Awesome character.
The coolest thing about gael is hes basically a nobody that makes it to the end of the world. Hes like us a random chosen undead/bearer of the curse/unkindled ash
Best Boss in the DLC. Hands down... My only negative of Messmer as a boss was how built up he was till the dlc release. You'd expect him to be the big bad final boss of the game, or something about his abyssal serpent having a greater impact to become the big bad boss of the game and Miquella comes to saves you or Messmer as a 2nd phase thingy of sort... But no... Its peak Radahn... Piggy backing Miquella like the Lothric brothers of dark souls 3.
The first Genichiro fight and Ludwig will always be my 2 favorite boss fights
Messmer now he is my favorite character in all souls series
Messmer is annoying but has really cool moves
Messmer is the most pessimistic and nihilistic person in the game. He believes that the world will end with him and the serpent and everything is not worth nothing. He doesn't find anything worth of living, he can't find a meaning of life, only despair.
Messmer is a child of AMERICA😄
Theres an item called the winged serpent helm, which states in its description. “The winged serpent is the token creature of messmers military forces. It is a wise friend which keeps the base serpent at bay and holds its power in check” i think this indicates the red serpent(with wings) in phase 1 is the winged serpent, used as a tool for messmer to control his base serpent(aka his curse and the large snake in 2nd phase.)
Edit:The white snake in phase 2 still has wings and is prolly still the winged serpent, i think the large serpent attacks he uses are the base serpent instead
there is actually alot of references to him in the base game
"Base" game
Example please
Off top of my head I know there was an impalers tomb. Pretty sure there were more places/items with the impaler name to them as well.
@@JT_No_Money one of the flasks descriptions also mentions his name
Give 20 examples rn
I still think Morgot/Margit is my favorite boss in this game. Others are cool but he’s my favorite.
Born in the golden lineage and because he’s an omen he was thrown into the shunning grounds and looked down upon. But even after that, he’s still remains loyal to the Golden Order. I love how he did the whole “all of you are wrong” meme. He thinks all of the other demigods are traitors and he doesn’t even want us to become Elden Lord…when even he doesn’t want to become Elden Lord. Bro hunted us down 3 TIMES and only died when his father came and held him in his arms.
Morgott is truly one of the best Gatekeepers of all time. Part of me thinks he’d get along with Messmer, even if it’s just a little.
His voice actor nailed it.
Yes loved this vid tweedy. Would love to see this type of content with other bosses. Bring on the lore!
You were right the first time. It is "SE-ki-ro" Actually, Japanese doesn't really stress syllables. But to English speakers, the lack of stress on the second syllable makes it sound like there is stress on the first.
I would kill to have a book or anime or something of before the shattering showing how all the Demi-gods acted towards each other before shit when down
Because he is the best boss in the game.
Sonicfox tier list breakdown u are the culture we need it
I was excited for Messmer before the DLC came out, his design was so fascinating and i was happy that he was like my favorite boss, Gael, because hes an amazing mix of challenge, lore, and a fun fight.
Messmer should have been the final boss.
Ds3>BB>ER>ds1 unfortunately that game 2nd half is not finished imo those 3 are better :)
Bosses for me are Gael>Ludwig>Malaketh!!
Just beat the final boss today and honestly it made me appreciate Messmer’s fight a lot more. Messmer had already become my favourite character from the DLC, but I don’t think I’ve had as much fun with many other bosses besides him and maybe Relanna (similar to why I love Lady Maria so much), and the painful final battle really put that into perspective 🥲🥲
This mf explaining the lore is equal to crack!! 💎🙌🏽💯👀🐐🔥😱💀
I think messmer might be the best video game fight I’ve ever played. Idk it’s up there with sword saint
Surpassed gael for me. Sure gael was fun but held back by ds3 mechanics. It’s just so easy to rollspam everything but his moveset is SUPER cool. Messmer though… has a gael level moveset, less bombastic but just as good. But he’s made better by elden ring mechanics where you actually have to be super precise with your dodges, which makes the fight that much more satisfying
Rennala's story is so sad. I hate Radagon for leaving her for Marika
I mean her sister kinda did the same ahahah, one went to radagon and the other went to Messmer
I mean, technically radagon left Rennala for himself, since marika and radagon are the same person
They probably weren't always the same person @@darkmatter9643
@@bigsleepy3211 the duality of Miquella and st Trina and how they are paralleling him with Marika, would suggest that radagon and Marika was and always have been the same person. but different aspects.
@@gilchristdavid8473exactly. Like magical personality disorders that are made physically manifest
Hoooold up, Marika made SEVERAL blessings? Did they change it for some reason? I mean I got caught up in work but still managed to play some of the dlc on day 1, found Marika’s blessing and it stated that “she never made a second”.
The implications is that she made a lot for Messmer and then she never emade for anyone else
2:25 The red spear impaling Marika is more likely the Elden Beast's doing since it has a grab attack where it impales you with multiple spears although they're gold in color.
As a fight gael is the best followed by lothric and Lorain boss fight and lore. Elden ring was my first souls game and the dlc lore didn't live up to my expectations.
I needed a good agile boss like malekith or morgott in the dlc, and we got messmer. He instantly rose to my pairred top one boss spot after i got him to phase 2 for the first time. Now that the dlc is out and ive fought all bosses, ive made my decision on what boss i want a tattoo of and its our boy messmer 100% Midra is also super cool.
No.. you're no VaatiVidya but this was a good video, brotha. Take my sub and keep up the good work. 😁🤙
My fav game of all time was Tenchu for a long time, til Elden Ring.
Messmer has weight compared to most bosses since u can feel the effect of his rule all around you compared to the lands of between or maybe he is just more active and cool since his soldiers look like they are in ever lasting conflict
Breh how did Starscourge Radahn not make your list, lore wise and gameplay cinematic wise.
bro please do midra, he is my favorite boss fight from the dlc!
May not have been the hardest, but dude is the best boss in the DLC and top 5 for the entire game.
Finally some lore videos on the DLC!
The rotten is the best boss ever 😂😂
ur wrong, messmer's crusade was merika's orders, she wanted revenge of the hornsent
I completely agree, best boss in Elden Ring for sure. Also from a lore perspective I assumed that his sister mentioned was Melina because of all the fire, although he could still be bother to Miquella as Melina might be their sister (and they all start with M)
I literally played Kings Field the day the PS1 launched, lol. I loved it at the time
Favorite fight so far, summoning Hornsent for that extra lore is the cherry on top. This fight had me in fits.
I knew I anime people would love this guy lmao
I love this fight so proud I beat him without summons
Queen Mareka is a horrible mother no cap
Just beat him a little earlier, 25ish tries maybe (lvl10 blessing). Great boss. Found rolling into his attacks really helped.
I'm maybe half way through. I'm enjoying the dlc fights. It feels like after a few tries that first phase really clicks...I took little damage against Messmer until phase two when I killed him, and the 2nd phase was hectic. Same with the lion and Rellana - first phase clicks after a few tries and then it's a chaotic brawl during their 2nd phases.
Yea Mesmer is one of the bosses that I will help people beat him for hours. I just never get bored of fighting him. And the phase 2 is just EPIC! Beautifully created and orchestrated. Coming second was the Fire Giant, another fun fight IMO.
Gameplay wise, he is what I wanted from a ER boss that malenia lacked. All his attacks are dangerous like the bosses of old rather than being carried by one big super attack. Making her super easy once you trivialize it.
His combos are awesome, and the ascetic of him is so cool. Probably gonna cleanup the rest of the bosses with his weapon. (Kinda speedran through the dlc so need to get more shadeau tree bark for the final boss).
I felt messmer’s boss fight was a nightmare but the lore and story is just amazing though. Messmer is a tragic character ❤❤❤also a lot of the bosses from all souls games that I’ve played are just fantastic as well! Anyways hope to play against you in MK1 matches 😊🎉❤❤
i like messmer but he felt under used
This is the only boss in the DLC that fromsoft actually gave a fuck about in this DLC, the fight is awesome and visually stunning, he has interesting dialogues and the boss design is great ; no wonder they've been advertising him as the main face of the DLC even though he's not the final boss, all the other bosses in the DLC are simply hot garbage 🗑️ or at least they didn't put as much care and love like messmer but that's my opinion anyway.
Don't forget Melina is also Messmer's sister! Messmer's Kindling description says, "Messmer, much like his younger sister, bore a vision of fire".
I fell in love with Messmer since I saw him, even without knowing his lore. After watching FatBrett's and Vaati's videos, I fell in love even more. He is tragic and deserved better.
I speculate that marika was cursed to have afflicted children after her children with Godfrey then exiled him, concieved messmer with radagon in swcret as an experiment before radagon went to war with raya lucaria
I think the flame he uses is a derivitive of the fell gods flame but dont know bout the serpants
It may have nothing to do with anything. However, only Godwyn, Marika and Miquella have golden hair while everyone else has red hair. It must say something about these three, maybe Godwyn was the only one who didn't have the “if something wrong happens” thing.
Marika and Miquella are mother and son in every way, right down to their alter egos Radagon and St. Trina. I believe that Marika and Miquella are ambitions, dreams and desires. While St. Trina and Radagon are morality and emotions. This explains why Miquella and Marika are so inhuman, cold and pragmatic in their actions. While Radagon and St. Trina end up having unforeseen events such as falling in love, regrets, etc.
I just wish we knew more about this serpent and what the abyssal serpent is. Is it another outer god, like the god of rot? Trying to take over her children to gain control.
The snake appears to be inspired by the serpent from the Bible. The one that tempted Eve into eating from the Tree of Knowledge. The first sin.
When he breaks Marika’s seal(?) he becomes “Base” which, in this context, must mean lowly or primal in some way. He’s giving into his base instincts and using the serpent to its full potential. Much like how Godfrey unleashed his true self as Hoarah Loux and becomes a savage barbarian.
Messmer’s curse is quite different from his siblings. As he literally has a parasite attached to him. Malenia’s scarlet rot was influenced by the Rot God but he wasn’t literally part of her like the snake is. And Miquella doesn’t seem to have anyone’s influence associated with his eternal youth. I’m curious to see what other lore channels do with that observation. I can’t help but associate it with the God Devouring Serpent and Rykard.
Perhaps Messmer was cursed by it specifically. Maybe even chosen by it to become what Rykard would. But with his banishment it became impossible.
Marika tried to cure him of this curse but couldn’t. And she even deemed it necessary to banish him on an endless crusade. That’s how frightened she was of it. She didn’t do it to Melania who also had a destructive curse, clearly that serpent is more dangerous than we realize. It seems their lives are bound to one another if one dies they both die, she must not have been able to kill her own son and instead sent him somewhere it wouldn’t hurt the other Demigods.
Question : Is it possible for Messmer's curse to be a result of the Fell God ? He has the same red hair as Radagon. I believe he was Marika's first born but why are all of her children cursed ?
I was obsessed with Artorias, Raime, Gael and Radahn. The wolf knight greatsword was my main weapon in all 3 darksouls games since its my favorite in the series even over the Moonlight Greatsword.
Messmer won a new place in my heart and hes now my favorite boss in the entire game. If anything Messmer's existence is proof that Marika's order was far from perfect and the way she goes about hiding him is truly foul and its apparent her image was more important to her than her diligence. The other detail that immediately stood out to me is the love Messmer's army has for him. You can tell they all genuinely loved him which made me take different looks at him aside from the tyrant he was made out to be. I even felt Miquella deserved to die way more than Messmer did. It seems the events of Bonny village never left from Marika which is why she became so heartless. The last good deed she performed was ordaining the tarnished to become Elden Lord.
Though in the end I can't help but feel she herself was tired of how abhorrent everything became.
Some things I noticed.. It seems Messmers curse was not really the snakes perse but he was born Graceless and heretical by nature which was his curse, the snakes are the representation of that imo.. This is way it specifies that Marika gave him a 'seal of grace' in place of his eye, and when he goes into his second phase and removes it he refers to himself as 'The abyssal serpent shorn of light' aka he removes his grace to fight us at full power.. Similar to how Malenia uses the scarlet bloom against us and Radahn actually, another parralel to his sister. His Red hair also implies he is a child of Marika/Radagon which means he is closer to Malenia, Miquella and possibly Melina than the other Demigods.
4:20, you're wrong here. Messmer was naive fool, still waiting for his mother to return. His followers were also shunned from the golden order, and they became enraged and angry against marika.
Thats why all marika statues are broken except the one messmers room. He only became bitter and resenful at the end
Messmer exterminated the hornset by his mothers orders. He was as gentle and honorable as radahn, but committed heinous acts for his mothers wishes.
Melina is Messer's sister
And if the theory is confirmed, Melina was the Gloam Eyed Queen.
I wonder if every Kid Marika / Radagon had was cursed because of the fact that the technically had children with themselves cussing some type of birth defect only reason I don’t lean into that theory is because Rannis curse was her fate and not wanting to accept it it so
How are you literally going to skip Ds2 but say you played all of them... This doesn't even make sense
I dont believe he wanted to be this figure for the war he was a part of. When I was doing his fight and he said his line about Messmers Flame it sounded like this line he has been forced to say time and time again and he has become and tired and weary of saying it. The war has been over for a long time and he has been sitting waiting for Marika to return, he may not even be aware the Shattering took place. So he is left to sit and wait for a mother that will never return. To tell him the sacrifices he made was worth it in the end.
Thank u man, amazing vid and amazing lore
He has to be my favorite character in all of Elden ring. Lore and boss wise he fun to learn. Lore wise he was just a dude cool with everyone. His mom and the two fingers are the reason he is in that situation
Messmer was my favorite fight low-key I felt like a dbz character after beating the dlc and going back to the base game I felt like a new beast lol
Right💪🏿
Dark souls is for me the best game of from software but in general all their games are amazing
Owl father, genichiro, Godfrey and soul of cinder are my favourite bosses
Ivory King is the real GOAT across the franchises
Bayle the dread is my favorite boss from this game but messmers moveset was the most fun to dodge imo
I just wish the player character had the crazy animations that the bosses have
Yo I need your opinion since your KAGE right? Other kage are telling me black Adam vs superman is a 5-5 match up lmao what do you think? If superman can 5-5 black Adam surely superman must be a very solid character right? 😂
I have no idea I stopped playing that match up in late 2017, I felt like superman lost but it's been so long and the game has progressed so much
Bro the Name is Gael, Not Gail it’s pronounced “Ga-L” the E is silent
I wonder if the Drake knights have any affiliation with him
great lore for mesmer, tweedy.
i just saw your vod where you mention the possible explanation for the dlc ending. i think its really good explanation. are you gonna post it too?
yeah for sure
