My grandmother kept pigs in Spain and I was always so excited to see them each year when we would visit, every year one was missing as they would be killed traditionally at Christmas time, but that pig would feed many families with various produce for the whole year. We need to go back to communal farming, it's wonderful this movement is growing.

Community farms are a powerful tool in places overwhelmed by the land grab of developers. It's a teaching tool for people who are disconnected and seeking to develop the skills needed to become small farmers/ homesteaders. You and Julia are a prime example, learning more and growing the desire to have your own.❤

We own some land in Cornwall but the council won’t let us live on it, even temporarily- even told it cant be used for leisure (growing vegetables for oneself to consume- is classed as leisure and not agriculture!) so you might have difficulty to get a piece of land & do what you want unless you get a house along with it! Or disused building that’s been there for more than 10 years. Luckily we have been leisurely growing vegetables for over 10years on the site so we are ok apparently. But best of luck you find the right thing in your search 😊

If people club together and have a community co-operative plot than that will work. Most farmers are tenant farmers and at the will of a big landowner. Give me a co-op any day. Especially when land in this country is so expensive, it’s the only way some are going to get back to the land… unless they move abroad where it’s cheaper.

    • @PhilipMatthewsPAEACP

@@TheKitchenGardenatPlot6b So it's the NWO way for you! Listen, while ever we are not free people living on the kings (NWO) land, they are going to get us! If they had a way of strapping us in a cage and extracting our wealth they would do that without a second thought!
Pretending they are decent people and begging for scraps will end with those straps and that cage.
The land is owned by everyone NOT a few gangsters!

With the price of land being out of reach for the majority on these isles I think clubbing together to purchase a piece as part of a co-operative is a an excellent alternative. Most of us will only be able to have our own bit of land if we leave the UK and search abroad. And I quite like my home, so I’m staying out. Lucky to have a very place allotment plot right behind my home so a 20 second walk to my own little haven of bliss.

When you have got your little piece of heaven, don't let other well meaning people waste your time and money by giving information on farming fads, try and do things your way from research and try other ways to see if the same goes for you, your land and the way you operate might be different from others that say do this this way.If you don't fail at some things you will never succeed the next time for ever.Learn about your land, its problems, its soil structure, its aspects, its history, get it tested, then you'll know what to grow where. If you are home building is there water for stock and you, its a great journey, enjoy, we are going from rented farming to our own bit of England too.

"Min or no-till is certainly not the only way to increase soil carbon.
There is clear scientific evidence that many farming practices-
particularly those that are part of organic farming systems, such as
winter cover-cropping, use of farm-yard manure and inclusion of
grass leys in arable rotations-contribute to raising the levels of soil
    organic matter and soil carbon."
WONDERFUL THING RESEARCH, Anyone can do it (apart from this complete spanner)

Community farming only works if there is one clear leader who is knowledgeable and respected but others. By all means have input and play to people's strengths but animals and crops cannot wait until arguments and power struggles are settled as often happens.

Depends what you mean by community farming. If your farm is open to others it can be a disaster. But if your allowing schools to visit and community to visit and buy that might be easier. But rules and regulations are a nightmare.

I don't want to be rude but you are getting older and I think if you're going to get some land to farm and live on. You should get on with it, i understand you are busy with your RUclips channel and doing talks . But if you really want to try living and working your small holding. You better get on with it. You could do a RUclips diary channel about your daily life on the small holding. I could be totally wrong you might be super fit and the physical side of it might be know problem. I'm your age and grew up on a farm and except i couldn't manage the physical side of it but that's me not you. I wish you both the best of luck i think you'll need it.

During the second ww the UK increased arable, especially oats, because it yields much more protein and sustenance per acre. Tree crops are the highest yield and the biggest benefit for all and a longer term investment, obviously. Native North Americans didn't take buffalo's milk, and ancient British didn't milk aurox. We have no need to be parasites in this way. Medicinal mushrooms or organic orchards would be wonderful. If food is scarce, fodder will be too, please think beyond the animal pen.

14 acres doesn't seem a lot to support more than a couple of people. I guess it might support one couple and a bunch of weekend helpers and hobbyists but really, 14 acres? I grew up in an area where people with 50 acres or so struggled to support a family. This is not to denigrate the efforts of all involved, and I wish them all luck and success.
