My ice cream bean flowered and produced fruit for me after 3 years in the ground it was only about 1 ft tall when I planted it. It started flowering about 3 months ago and its still flowering and growing fruit now. I really like the tree, very easy to care for and very fast growing. Live in Vista California! I live in Burlingame California (10-15 minutes south of San Francisco, Northern California) zone 10a and my “ice cream bean” is flowering right now! I noticed the “buds” first time a week ago and today, I just saw the buds have turned into beautiful flowers! I’m very excited because I have been growing this ice cream bean tree for about 4-5 years, I a pot, a 15 gallon pot! I live in a nursing home (physically impaired, in wheelchair) but I love nature! There is a small patio where I have gotten permission to do my “gardening” and I feel very good to have had a “chance” to continue with my passion for nature! Even after the brain stroke! I hopping this flowers will become fruits! 👨🏻🧑🏻🦼🕊🙏🏼💜👍🏼
: during those tree weeks plus that I was away nobody water my plants! I found many of them dead and many others badly stressed! My ice cream bean was among the distressed ones but with my TLC my plants are back on track again!,
Ice cream bean is a brittle tree so I'm planting mine right next to a grouping of tall sabal palms. The groupings of sabals surrounding my garden saved it from destruction during the last hurricane. I have such a new appreciation for them now. They blocked an incredible amount of wind because of the fact they were planted together in groups and left untrimmed.
What a gorgeous space! I grew two ice cream beans from seed...one is taller than 6 feet and the other is a little shorty. I put the taller one in ground already and it is so adorable. I can't wait till it really starts growing...she is still a single "trunk" and just has leaves all up and down. I look forward to her branching out and getting a little girthier! LOL!!
Wow yours look great. I've been trying to find pruning information on these because mine is almost 2 years old, 8 feet tall and growing straight up. There's no major limbs coming off, just the small leaf groups every few inches. At this rate it will be a 60 foot flag pole lol
That tapioca root tree I saw is a wonderful soil enrichment it makes it own nutrients and when the old roots rot in the ground they attract great bacteria that benefit the soil great to have that one

We have a 1/2 acre food forest in Central Florida in 9a and I really want to plant ice cream bean as a canopy tree but we have a few days of frost per year that burn mangos and papayas. The fact that it's a nitrogen fixer than can be chop and drop makes it attractive if it ends up failing as a fruiting tree in our zone.
Good call with the yucca. I'm sure they'll be really easy to pull out from wood chips. I'm doing the same with mine. I think the ice cream beans flower when they are of a specific size instead of age. Mine are 5 years old and they're not as tall as yours, and I have not gotten any flowers yet.
Never heard about the ice cream bean before, but then we’re in zone 8a. However, we still do try a few tropicals on our patio. Currently I’m growing a coffee tree seedling. It had a bit of a setback this winter when the cat 🐈 munched it.
What are your recommendations for Ice cream bean tree spacing? Looks like you have some of your cocoanut tree really close. I would think they would eventually compete even though the ice cream bean does fix nitrogen.

If you want to swing by Amelia Earhart Park, I have a huge tree loaded with fruit if you want some seeds. I'm still trying to come up with a decent use for the fruit. Not overly impressed with the flavor. but the tree is quite beautiful and generates a nice deep shade. (awesome in those barren landscape areas)
Thanks, they are not a long term element in the system, just for establishment phase. I recommend checking out Syntropic Agriculture, they use it a lot in brazil and the results are amazing.

I’d say Inga bean is much more hardy than coffee on another scale.

Grown from seed, they were about a foot tall when planted out.

Eucalypt leaves contain high oil content which can kill other plants in high concentrations. I wouldn’t use the leaves for chop and drop purposes.

I’m not sure if eucalyptus was a good idea to plant, the roots generate juglone, an allelopathic chemical that inhibits growth of other trees.
