- Adam messaged me on Twitter to tell me that he had seen my videos and liked my channel. He was looking to make a video on his beloved Nintendo DSI, however it was slightly faulty. We talked about the idea of me talking him through the repair over Skype, but settled for posting the item to me, then posting it back. This meant I could do a video on the repair! I hope you enjoy!

KshotTV I transferred my dsi pictures and all my stuff to my 3ds using the 3ds transfer tool found in the shop.

@@Connie_TinuityError Because it's a temporary fix to this problem (it's gonna stop working for sure at a moment) and it's dangerous for the console because you're spitting water indirectly on the inside

DSi looks easier to work on than the DS lite!

@@TheRetroFuture It's actually worse if you need to do anything with the upper screen - 2 ribbons instead of one curled through that hinge makes it more likely to tear one or both!
Keep in mind the DS lite has the GBA game reader.

The L and R buttons not working is probably a common issue on these. I remember having to send my DSi to Nintendo's service center twice!
I used to play my DSi all the time, it made tons of great memories for me. I wish it wasn’t stolen...

I just love the DSi beep at the beginning. I only really use my DSi for my alarm (of all my DS/3DS, it is the only one where the hinges are perfect and don't make that loud clicking noise, perfect if I need to sleep in and turn off the alarm). But the beeping intro is something I miss about it that didn't make it over to the 3DS.
Man, i wish this dude could fix my broken 3ds xl :( it has memories on it but the top screen is black 24/7 because of a broken hinge
Its the same with mine. The only way you can fix it is that you buy a NEW 3DS xl and transfer the top part onto the old one (thats broken). So you might as well buy a new 3DS XL if you can find a way to get all your data onto your SD Card. Hope it works! :3

it's a whole ribbon cable, but they're not hard to replace

Oh wow, this brings back so many old memories. I used to, and still have my Nintendo DSI, it was meant to be my mother's but I kinda "stole" it since she didn't use it at all. It sadly stopped working years ago- Even the "Health and Safety" screen at the start is the same as my Nintendo's.
So what was up with the L and R buttons, were the contacts corroded on the board or something?
The Nintendo Dsi is notorious for broken shoulder buttons. I still have mine (it barely functions) and the shoulder buttons were the first thing to break.
Yeah i rewatched this to fix my right back button, and while breaking it apart and putting it back together worked out and i didn't damage it, the right button still doesnt work, so ill have to replace it maybe one day with another sd card component 😔

@Greenstorm late to the party but you can actually disassemble the switch and scrape of the corrosion that's preventing contact thus blocking the button from working
When replacing the L/R ribbon cable, chances are you need to adjust the screen bias for both displays, as they are on this cable. A flickering display is a good indicator this needs adjustment (this is visible in this video). This should be done with the system on and battery door removed for access. Be gentle, as the adjustment pots are easy to break.

Makes me feel like disassembling my own DSi XL, which the left shoulder button and volume switch don't work.
try blowing in the shoulder button it works for me
I just did it but it didn't work.
2 years later I found out, I forgot to plug the left shoulder ribbon back in.

Haha, this was definitely fun! I love SomeThingElseYT. I find it kinda funny though cause when I needed to replace my buttons and (on the 3DS) the Circle Pad, I just kinda opened it up and jumped straight into the deep end to repair it instead of sending it all the way across the Atlantic. XDXDXD
Only thing more therapeutic than watching someone repair an old console is doing it yourself. Honestly fixing consoles, even just like doing a Joycon shell swap, is relaxing as hell for me

I keep on thinking this is a guy with no idea what he’s doing, and just ripping apart a DS but then I’m reassured realizing he’s a professional.
softmodding it can let u backup the internal memory to a file, and it's very easy to softmod, and it provides bricking protection since from then onward it will use the SD card as a virtual NAND
A simple Google search will tell me how to do this, I assume?

I have a question I’m hoping you can help me with. My brother got barbecue sauce in my new 3Ds XL in 2 of the letter buttons specially and I’m having a hard time clicking them. Can you give me some advice or make a video on how to clean it out?
You would need to take it apart to clean it! I have done a 3ds XL refurb before, not a new 3ds yet. Maybe soon!

@@Mandarinmellon maybe try to get some sauce out with some thin if you are careful enough sharper than usual toothpicks pick at the place the sauce is visible try not to scratch it though
I was playing the Anniversary Legend of Zelda Four swords on my 3DS when my Left and Right buttons stopped working unless you spammed it really hard (which you needed to switch inbetween Links and you needed that for some of the bosses) so I never got past the final boss because I didn’t have enough time to switch inbetween Links
If only I knew this guy years ago i have a DS Lite and DSi both broke on me

Hi! I have a DSi here that won't charge. I checked the connector, fuses and the EMI filter - all good. Does anyone here have the schematics for it flying around? I need to find out what components are responsible for charging. I have another option for a replacement circuit with micro USB, but maybe I'm lucky, so I post here.

the shoulder contacts always fail on the DSi , it's a common problem - the fix is to replace both buttons. The poor mans fix is detaching the shield over the microcontact and the rubber button and cleaning the inside metal pill that clicks and also the base on which it contacts then reassemble and done! no more problems. maybe this piece of information is useful for someone that does not have acces to replacement parts. good luck !!

It makes sense that removing the battery wouldn't delete the memory, it's not old enough to have volatile system data storage.
I got the dsi on my fifth birthday it was awesome I got blue and my cousin got red and we played a lot of Pokémon until its final moments I loved it and still remember it

This happened to every GBA SP, DS Lite, and DSi that I ever owned. The shoulder buttons were absolutely trash.
