    On a recent trip back to the States, Lou and I went back to our old neighborhood in New York City to shoot a roll of 35mm film (Portra 400) on our Canon A1. Like I say in the video it had been AGES since I last shot film, and as you watch you will soon learn how things ended up not going as expected. Without ruining the ending all I can say problem solving leaves room for much more creativity than I ever expected!!
    The entire point of this video was to combine the importance of remembering to capture your daily life and the magic of writing a blog post. Hope it left you feeling inspired!!
    Please check out our blogpost too!! We worked so hard on it and all my film photos and illustrations are there, plus way more stories from our NYC years.
    www.wildweroam...
    Question of the Week: For those of you who watched until the end of the video, would you have kept drinking your tea too? Or poured it down the drain?
    UPDATE: So, according to our local photography store expert, the problem was entirely self-made, we shouldn't have shot on the green automatic setting on the lens while in Aperture Priority mode, that only works for Shutter Priority. Someone in the comments had suggested we do it that way, but we should have done our own research before trying it out! In the end, we were lucky though that some of the photos worked at all, and that we came away with all these watercolors : )
    Thank you for watching, for reading, and for joining us here. It means the world to Lou and I to connect with each of you and we're so grateful for your continued support.

    Dear Lou & Dana
    Honestly this is one of my favorite videos you guys have ever posted, you’re very right about how we don’t really photograph or capture the places we live in as much as we do with places we visit.
    I love how you went back to a life you once had to see what was left after you had left. I love all the photographs that Dana took and how she tried to capture not only the places but also the moments and memories she recalled from her memory of your time spent there. I love how Lou is our eyes to the world you roam but also shows us how he sees Dana through his eyes.
    It broke my heart to see Dana’s face as she found out half of the photos were missing and couldn’t be retrieved. I find there is something very beautiful about how she blames herself by accepting her own shortcomings as a photographer (even though I believe she’s an incredible photographer and each shot is so beautiful) and the way Lou mentions other more likely reasons why the film could have been affected or developed well.
    I felt hope for a new and better day when she decided to not give up and still try to capture with art what she hadn’t been able to get from the camera. I love Dana’s fighting spirit and will to never give up in face of hard times and how she makes the best lemonades out of the lemons life gives you guys.
    Dana is a beautiful human being with an even more beautiful and graceful soul inside her and you Lou are the best husband and partner anyone could ever ask for. Thank you for not only sharing and documenting your adventures through life, but also for inspiring so many of us to go out there and not be afraid to face and challenge life and learn from it.

      Wow Aaron, we are absolutely floored by your kind words!! Thanks so much for taking the time to write all that, we read every comment but its truly special to find times when people take the time to slow down and really engage with the story behind the video, Dana isn't home right now but I will be sure to show her this comment, she really was a little upset about the film and its so true what you say about her blaming herself when really it turns out I caused the problem by having her switch the lens to automatic at the beginning of the video which is a setting we've never used and might well have been the issue! Anyways, happy Friday, hope you have a wonderful weekend Aaron! ---Lou

I never thought of shooting film in my country cause it's so hard here...but just like a fairy tail, after weeks of searching i found a canon ae-1 nd then i bought the only film in my city and here i am today shooting film for the first time in my life in Istanbul... It's all because of you guys so A HUGE THANKS TO YOU ! ❤❤

    Dana, you’re no longer a novice photographer, BTW. Light, subject and composition were nailed. This is why we shoot. To capture a moment. To remember. To share. To create. you guys shooting at night on the bridge used aperture priority mode, iso about 400 so maybe the camera decided to use a long shutter speed and that's why it broke the picture. Because when you pressed the shutter, the sound you heard maybe only the mirror flips up and you thought it was the shutter's sound, then you move the camera because you think it has done taking the picture, while it wasn't and that caused an all blur, underexposed picture afterward.

      Le Mark thanks man. This is actually really good stuff to know. I haven't done much film photography stuff since I was a kid but I'm getting back into it. I really appreciate when people who know more than me share their knowledge. Anyways, good wishes.

    • @Driftstar217
      @Driftstar217 7 лет назад +3

      no problem man. I made this mistake when I first used a DSLR too, thanks god it's digital so I didn't learn it the hard way. Anw, after watched the video again, at 0:23 Dana turned the aperture ring to auto, this mean she's in shutter priority or full auto, either way, the camera can't compensated the lack of exposure of the 400 iso film, so it still led to an underexposed picture

    • @WildWeRoam
      @WildWeRoam  7 лет назад +2

      Thanks for the input! I have to theories, one is that our battery was running low and recently just died so maybe that caused the shutter to not work properly. The second, which I need to do more research on still, is that the automatic setting on the lens shouldn't be used for aperture priority mode, which is what the old man at the photography store told us. Unfortunately there are a lot of guides online saying the opposite, but literally the only time the camera hasn't worked was on the auto lens setting so that does make sense to me, but I need to figure it out 100 percent to be certain! ---Lou

    • @johntazbaz1121
      @johntazbaz1121 6 лет назад

      Lou, the Canon A-1 manual says to put the lens on A when using Aperture Priority. So I like your theory about the battery. Also, maybe it's just a result of underexposure. The video footage on the bridge looked quite dark and I'm assuming that your ISO setting on the video camera was higher than the ASA of the film in the A-1. I started shooting film during the early 1980s and I really enjoy watching you two going through the film learning process (but bummer about the bridge).

    The loss of the film was unexpectedly poetic. There you were trying to relive old memories to capture them, but more than the memories wanted to be documented they wanted to be remembered. Perhaps that is the form all history is the most beautiful. Free to provide an impression rather than be the subject of pixel peeping. To live in a moment is to occupy all of it's space, and that space is much bigger than 35mm. Photos are simply a quiet window to the past.

    I've worked in photography most of my life...from behind the camera to camera sales...and lab to dark room. If you take the negatives back into the lab and ask them to try and print those images...you might be surprised by what you get. They are very underexposed from lack of light...but there will still be an image. Hopefully they print them there in house and they do not send them off...that way they can adjust them the way you like...light and grainy to see the people or darker to show the lights. Give it a try...would love to see what you've captured!! Also, I really enjoy your videos...a lot! Take care.

    Same thing happened to one of my rolls of portra 400 :(
    I lost all photos from the roll, all the photos of my friends and family on the day of my birthday.
    I understand the sadness and frustration that Dana was feeling while she was going through her prints and not seeing the last half of her shots.

      Yeah I guess that's just part of shooting film, or at least learning how, theres this very real risk it might not work, but then again hard drives crash all the time as well so theres no perfect answer out there, you just got to keep you chin up and not worry too much about little setbacks because longterm its no big deal! ---Lou

    I went to Cambodia and visited the Angkor Wat temples and the beautiful beaches, only to discover that when I got back home all the film was overexposed.
    It was the worst feeling and I felt as though I had lost my entire trip.
    6 months later and I now live in Cambodia. I can't wait to go back to the temples and create new photos.

    It’s the X-tray machines!!!
    I went to Nyc last year and I had two 35mm rolls that I shot. When I came back home one roll was fine, but the other had about 8 shots that were damaged from the x-ray machines that I had to go through at the airports and at a museum. They sell special travel bags online for transporting film while traveling. I haven’t bought one, but it would be a great investment.

    • @LigusterDK
      @LigusterDK 7 лет назад +1

      Def not xray damage, X-rays will most likely not damage your film. I've carried 10 rolls of 100-400 ISO film through two scanners and none showed anything. I also carried a roll of ISO 800 through 3 scanners plus a huge scanner that was also used for checked bagage. That roll was fine as well. NEVER try to hide things from the xray. Just ask the security personel (if they say no immediately, then ask if they are sure), if the film has to go through, don't sweat it.

    • @DutchUnbox
      @DutchUnbox 7 лет назад +2

      If it even was because of X-ray, the whole roll would be toast. Also, the lost shots are not overexposed, because that would cause black negs, not those clear negs as seen in the video.

    • @nolanrogers4129
      @nolanrogers4129 7 лет назад +4

    That's a real downer. Especially as you decided to shoot film to document your old neighborhood. It won't have been the security scanner that ruined it though. Ive carried expired film through scanners for dozens of flights and it's not done anything. The x-rays for hand luggage aren't strong enough to ruin film (at least under 1600 ISO).
    Awesome video again guys. You obviously had a great time revisiting New York!

    Heartbreaking at some lost frames. I finished my first ever roll recently, and am dreading getting it back and half of them being unusable. and I know for sure I missed a good few by not checking my lightmeter near the beginning of it. So difficult to get used to!

    I just love this art form and craft 😍
    Whenever I think to combine words with a single photo to tell a short and sweet story, I get this warm fuzzy feeling in my heart.
    It took me years to finally get out there and share my point of view with the public.
    And so far I still can't comprehend the positive feedback I got and still get.
    It's hard no to loose ground beneath your feet as a result of it. I still have my little doubts and fears but they help me to stay grounded and appreciate even the littlest things in life.

    I'm an old dude and I have used film cameras for years and years and I STILL make mistakes and lose prints. Spent an entire day films with a Olympus Pen EE ( half frame camera) and lost the entire roll because the film did not catch on the sprocket gears correctly and never advance the film after each shot. You get twice as many photos on a half frame camera than the roll says. IE : 36 exposures per roll and you actually can take 72 photos. Long story short... I took 72 photos ( I thought) and got ZERO prints for my efforts. Now THAT was a real bummer. Live and learn. Don't give up and enjoy film cameras as much as possible because you never know when they will become a complete oddity that you only see in museums. Love your video by the way and both of your personalities!! Great souls both of you!

    Donnybrook is a peripheral region of Dublin, in Ireland, not too far from where I live. It's the HQ of RTE, the main Irish broadcast station and other things besides. And of course, the Guinness served draught in and around the capital, Dublin, is among the best in the world. Like me, draught Guinness may not always travel too well!! It's unfortunate about the negs. Something similar happened to me recently: I've been out shooting my Pentax MX. After about 13 frames, the film somehow got off the advance mechanism and all subsequent shots were exposed in a single frame. It's been sad, though it wasn't important shots like yours were. Anyway, you have my sympathies.
