I have to say, after watching Neil's 'meet the presenters' I have a lot more respect for him. He is a normal guy, doing what he loves, and is super honest. You don't have to wonder what he thinks, it doesn't feel like he is acting for the cameras. I think Neil and Blake are a perfect team and I love both of their styles. Keep it up GMBN! I don't even have a mountain bike yet, but will soon because of your content!
If you ride alone, please use a gps tracking app that can send your location in real time to your loved ones. I ride almost exclusively alone and this is a must, I can't risk something really bad happening to me and people not knowing where I am.
Tried Garmin's version of this a couple of years ago and it was so unreliable it was creating more worry than what it solved when the dot was not moving when expected (let's not even talk about the accident detection off-road ). Maybe Garmin's version is better now, or Strava's version is more reliable if your don't mind the drain on the phone battery. Currently, if was going to do something big big and way off the beaten track, I'd buy or rent a dedicated SPOT tracker. For everything else, folks know where I'm riding, I have "In case of emergency" contacts set on the iPhone and it's also set up to transmit its last location to Apple before the battery runs out * just to be on the safe-ish side. * Settings -> AppleID -> Find My -> Find My iPhone and then turn on "Send Last Location" option.
I love to wear camel backs because you can drink while your riding, you can store energy bars and what not and they give your back a bit of protection if you fall ( this happens a lot)
In summer it's a god send. Topeak versatile mounts add even more water to your ride. I've gone miles and miles in summer heat purely because there's a few gallons strapped to my back and the bike.
@@ratface7329 topeak do something called the Versamount. It uses a pair of lugs with a single bolt hole each. Each one is held onto a tube by tightening a band using a 4mm Allen key in a screw. Really simple to install and you can choose where you want them. Fork lowers, bars, top tube, down tube, seat post. Hell, you could even pop them on the seatstays if you've got sufficiently chunky seatstays. A Topeak Ninja cage is a great addition as models exist to carry a multitool (included with the cage) or to carry a C02 inflator and some spare canisters plus a mini pump. Gets a lot of kit off your back and onto the frame plus you're unlikely to ride off without ride essentials.
Instead of the jet wash, I got a $10 pressurized plant sprayer. 3 liter capacity. Pump that up a little more than you would for watering, and it gets the large chunks off in the field before you do the proper cleaning at home base.
Or alternatively, a Worx Hydroshot, and a few 2L cola bottles work extremely well. It’s a full on pressure washer which doesn’t need a tap or a power cable.
One of my favourite accessories is my 10l backpack. Can keep a few small spares, small pump, some cash, first aid items and an energy bar. I always wear it even for a ride just a couple of hours long.

Tools-wise I have exactly the opposite. My tool roll contains the A-tools because if I am out and have to fix something under less than optimum conditions, I will be happy to have the best tools with me.

One accessory that i am going to buy is a whistle. Was at a marathon mtb race last week and came across someone needing medical help. Paramedics found us because another rider came along and had a whistle to attract their attention. What a useful accessory!

My garmin (hiking sat nav - AA batteries and proper uk OS mapping) All for a long day out roaming cross country And the bike stand and the tow bar rack and so many more things I’d have to replace if lost....

I have to add my hydration fanny pack. Keeps the bottle clean while comfortably holding a phone, keys and nutrition when a full hydration pack is not required.
pls dont use hiplok if you fall on your back and you have a piece of metal between you and ground you might compitely crash into pieces your back and be paralised for the test od your life
3:30 Jet wash - I spent 20 years in IT so now I fix (among other things) water blasters. Some simple things to know... #1: Extension cords KILL water blasters. Due to the anperage a water blaster often requires, a decent size single phase water blaster is near the top end of your household wiring and an extension cord can add enough resistance that you end up with low voltage and high amperage... hilarity ensues.. usally culminating in either the start/run capacitor blowing, the motor windings failing.. or simply it pops your house fuse (if your lucky). FIX: Use no extension (which is near impossible when there isn't often a power supply outside, or near your hose)... so.. use as short and fat extension as possible (fat being larger internal wire size). #2: Electrolysis kills water blasters... Electrolysis=battery. Given the water left in your water blaster, mixed with a little muck and different metal types (especially alloy head pumps)... Leaving water in your water blaster for months as it sits lonely on your shelf allows corrosion to set in... (the water and metal mix acts like a battery and corrosive hilarity ensues)... This corrosion gets into the plastic spring backed piston that when over pressured, turns off your blaster, and when the pressure is released (you pull the trigger) turns back on... Result, you turn it on, it goes brrrrup and turns off, never to turn on again (secret hint.. tape the trigger ON and play with the faucet.. you may get lucky, never remove the tape or it will jam off again). FIX: When done. Remove BOTH garden and high pressure hoses, turn the unit on for ONLY one second. This clears the water so it can sit on the shelf for months. (If you have a fixed HP hose reel, pull the trigger and run the unit for no more than 3 seconds). If it doesn't turn on.. check the nozzle isn't blocked... on most (non tank) waterblasters water should pass through when u pull the trigger even when they are off if not, try removing the gun (with it off) then turn it on and if theres still no go, (and water IS passing through) then it's most likely a stuck shutoff valve holding the micro switch open. If it was a blocked nozzle... usually pushing the blockage back in (I use gas welding tip cleaners but a pin may do). Don't drill it out.. the tip is not a straight hole, drilling will turn your fan output into a kids water pistol. Oh and if you have a motor bike... DO NOT WATER BLAST YOUR RADIATOR... Or ... you guessed it...... Hilarity ensues! q8) - I'm guessing E-Bikes don't take well to high pressure water being injected into every crevice either...
You get used to working without a stand. Never had one and all my bikes are dialed. It's not super easy but you get used to it and it allows more chances to sit while building.

I had a stack over the bars just last week and my watch detected the fall and begun to call for emergency help. I was fine so cancelled the call but this could be a life saver if unconscious and by yourself!
So far I am managing without any serious level of tools. I got a £50 bike toolkit for home use that has all the basics for maintenance etc, but did invest in a workstand, a headset removal tool, Headset Cup Press Tool, a Decent Quality Hacksaw, a Star-Flaggled Nut installer and a Handlebar cutting guide! On the Electronics front, my older Android mobile (Galaxy S5 Mini) works great as a Strava Unit clamped to the handlebars with a phone holder! Like Neil I'm not precious about recording every stat and a every ride (I dont bother with power meters or heart monitors), the basics are fine to geek over. Next Can't do without accessory => Roof Bars and Bike Carrier or Rear mount bike carrier. undecided which to get...
Im not Neil but i got a Fenix 5 last year and got a garmin bar mount for it and a hr strap. You can set up the watch to give you plenty of data while riding. Ive got mine displaying distance, metres climbed, hesrt rste and elapsed time all at the same time. I didn't want to fork out the $$ for a dedicated gps when i could have a watch that would do pretty much everything too and could be used as a watch the rest of the time. I used it in a race last week and uploaded the course gpx to follow and it was great too! Couldn't be happier with the watch. The newer versions are even better im sure but the Fenix 5 does everything i need.

The decal was missing a piece of a corner but I ended up peeling them off anyways. Assembly is easy BUT make sure you tune up the derailleurs. Both the front and rear need adjusting. I'd advise going to a bike shop but I opted out and put in 10+ hours with the help of RUclips. Ended up fraying a shifter cable but all in all I learned from the experience. The Brakes work well but the front caliper needs adjusting or at least mine did because the rotor was rubbing against the pads. Make sure you swap out the seat, grips, and pedals. For the short run you'll be fine though. I've read that this bike isn't built yet for hard trails but I just need it for the city. PA has some of the worst roads and being in a mountain this was a great choice. Worth the investment!
My favorite accessories: whatever multitool I can find, a can of tire sealant (the kind that inflates the tire as well as spray in sealant and a cold beverage. Are clothing really accessories? I do wear clothes, mostly just whatever I was wearing that day but if I'm planning on falling I'm wearing light armored MC pants and jacket, and a helmet. If I'm gonna leave the bike somewhere I bring a cheap lock, just enough to keep the insurance guy happy.
+1 for the Hiploks. I got the thick Gold model and it's surprisingly comfortable, despite the high weight. Hard to believe that other chain lock manufacturers haven't made a similar system for theirs. I just wish there were more alarm locks. I really don't want to support the religious nutters over at Abus.

Just hose it off? I don't feel like the salt does much to a bike anyways, obviously you need to keep the drivetrain well lubricated but that about the only steel parts that isn't covered in grease and behind seals. if you're worried about nuts and bolts rusting you can always protect them or swap them to stainless ones, but my wife rides her bike to work every day trough the salt and the only washing it gets is when it starts raining. No real issues with rust other than the chain if I forget to lube it every other week...

Fanny pack is up there in my top 3! Getting the weight of your shoulders is a game changer for the both XC and trails

Im so lucky, in my hometown they have a free mountainbike wash.
On washing your bike Hart tool (sold at Walmart) have a 5gal battery power sprayer that looks like it would work good if no power is available.

The decal was missing a piece of a corner but I ended up peeling them off anyways. Assembly is easy BUT make sure you tune up the derailleurs. Both the front and rear need adjusting. I'd advise going to a bike shop but I opted out and put in 10+ hours with the help of RUclips. Ended up fraying a shifter cable but all in all I learned from the experience. The Brakes work well but the front caliper needs adjusting or at least mine did because the rotor was rubbing against the pads. Make sure you swap out the seat, grips, and pedals. For the short run you'll be fine though. I've read that this bike isn't built yet for hard trails but I just need it for the city. PA has some of the worst roads and being in a mountain this was a great choice. Worth the investment!
My favorite accessories: whatever multitool I can find, a can of tire sealant (the kind that inflates the tire as well as spray in sealant and a cold beverage.
Are clothing really accessories? I do wear clothes, mostly just whatever I was wearing that day but if I'm planning on falling I'm wearing light armored MC pants and jacket, and a helmet.
If I'm gonna leave the bike somewhere I bring a cheap lock, just enough to keep the insurance guy happy.

+1 for the Hiploks. I got the thick Gold model and it's surprisingly comfortable, despite the high weight. Hard to believe that other chain lock manufacturers haven't made a similar system for theirs.
I just wish there were more alarm locks. I really don't want to support the religious nutters over at Abus.

Is it ok to use the power washer on an e-bike? Here in Norway salt is used on the streets almost everyday on winter, and this ruins your bike

I don't feel like the salt does much to a bike anyways, obviously you need to keep the drivetrain well lubricated but that about the only steel parts that isn't covered in grease and behind seals. if you're worried about nuts and bolts rusting you can always protect them or swap them to stainless ones, but my wife rides her bike to work every day trough the salt and the only washing it gets is when it starts raining. No real issues with rust other than the chain if I forget to lube it every other week...
