I agree with everything, I would also add , as an experienced homeowner, pay a little bit more for full height cabinets that are flushed with the ceiling ,wherever possible. Nothing looks good on top of them anyway, and cleaning greasy dust is a huge pain. Not to mention an injury hazard if you have to climb cabinets and ladders.

TrueNorth747 You are right about those full height cupboards. I am redoing my kitchen and would love to get them. But my kitchen has a bulkhead all the way around that houses water lines and a drain pipe from an upstairs bathroom. It would represent a major job rerouting this. It all comes around and goes down to the basement in the wall on the one side of the kitchen. I thought of eliminating that wall and taking that other room to expand the kitchen. But that wall has the water lines, drain, some electrical, the thermostat and the cold air return that also goes upstairs. It all spells nightmare to me. So i'm stuck with the regular sized cupboards.

You should have something on the top of the cabinets. I haven't seen a square house yet. The trim at the top is to hid gaps at the top of the cabinets.
She should totally do audiobooks in her spare time. Very soothing, non-demeaning, and approachable in her way of speaking. I always thought of plywood as being blah, but I see that it can be very useful in some applications. Thanks!

I built 27 RTA unfinished Conestoga Wood cabinets myself this year. Had fun staining and top coating them myself and for the uppers, took them out in my backyard and used a Graco sprayer to paint them antique white :) Lots of work, but also the feeling of accomplishing a large project was rewarding. FWIW I've been refinishing and staining wood for 40 years, but only have used a paint sprayer for the recent 4 years

I've missed so many of your videos Leah, but glad your still putting your beautiful tutorial videos. I've been so swamped with doing kitchen cabinet installs myself. I had to quit working for a company do to the fact of them cursing all the time with my work. I go above & beyond to make the customers happy & he had no appreciation so I just chose to go my way & not tolerate that kind of nonsense.

Thanks leah. You were spot on. I would just like to add, if you do decide to get MDF, you could always skin the inside. In other words add and glue a thin material. That will protect your cabinet from water damage. You could also stain or paint your skin material. Thanks again

I'm not sure what you do for a living (aside from making these excellent videos) but you should have a classroom. Having skill or knowledge is one thing but the ability to teach is one of the rarest. I am a professional carpenter but I wish I had a fraction of your ability to spell things out. There would fewer mistakes, less wasted time and a lot less frustration if we could spell things out to the helpers or each other on a job site like you can. Keep it up!

It’s so important that content is valuable/usable, easy to understand for the person who is seeking knowledge to take on their own project, but who may know nothing. Hey Leah. I love the channel. I am a professional cabinet maker. I own my own shop and I have been fine woodworking for 8 years. I am making cabinets full time. I think this video is very helpful for helping people understand the basics of buying cabinets from big box bulk stores. When buying from big box stores you are prettt accurate in what you sais but I would also mention that many fine cabinets can be exceptions to a few things you pointed out. For example- particle board core melamine is an amazing material and any cabinet maker who is putting a proper frame on their cabinets and understands proper cabinet joinery will get fantastic results with it. The white melamine coating on particle board strengthens the sheet to be waterproof, strong against flexing, and extremely durable. Most cabinet making shops use melamine for all their workbenches because of how durable it is. If you understand how to use it it is a fantastic material. Btw, melamine and vinyl are very different materials. Vinyl sucks as a surface but melamine is amazing. By first glance most people couldnt tell the difference between the 2.
Also, you are correct that dovetails are very strong, but again... The big box stores mainly deal in the most common knowledge products. Like this- if you get to pick your own case material then they arent gonna put a material on there that is confusing. They arent gonna give you enough rope so that you coild hang yourself. Unlike my work, where you tell me exactly what you want and I take initiative to make it to how you want it (even if you dont know what you want) the benefit there isnthat I dont have to try to educate you on the pros and cons of every part of the process. I dont even give my clients the choice of soft close or not. Everything is melamine. Everything is soft close. Everything is General Finishes lacquers with a Chemcraft primer. Btw... There is plywood core melamine but it is 3 times the cost and an experienced cabinet maker would have 0 benefits of using a plywood core over particle board. Both look identical and both will last forever with a stupid amount of durability. What more could you ask of a material than to do everything you coild ever want with no problems?
Btw.... Particle board without a melamine face is so brittle compared to melamine faced particle board that I have never and will never have it in my shop. Also, melamine has denser than normal particle board cores so it is already a better core. When screwing into melamine from any angle you will not get splitting if you use the right screw. You need to contact cabinet screw companies like Fasco and they will send you screws that can go into any cabinet material no matter how brittle the material is on the edges without splitting. Often the problem with the material isnt the material itself, its the screw. Same with most woods. I have screws that can go straight into hard maple with no counter sink bit and bury itself under the surface with no splitting or furring.
My drawer sides are bullnosed pre finished Baltic birch ply with a melamine (not vinyl) bottom. Beautiful, affordable, very durable. In fact the material itself is much more stable and water resistant than raw lumber. I learned from a cabinet maker of 25 years and he has never once had a drawer fail over the period of his career. Neither have I.
So theres many things about cabinet making that are exceptions to the rules that an expert consultant would be able to navigate for you. Usually the smaller companies do a better job in my opinion.
The same way I wouldnt give my clients the choice of either latex or a lacquer finish (because lacquer is simply a better and cheaper to apply finish with my setup) I dont give my clients much choice aside from the style, color, and functionality.
If you ever have time to walk into a cabinet making material store like a hardwood retailer I think you will see some materials that outright shock you and you stare at for 10 minutes wondering how a cabinet maker would benefit from using it lol. But these smaller cabinet shops often have passion for their craft and are not only the builders but also the expert consultants and can stay up to date with the best materials to get the best products for the clients.
If I gave my clients every choice over ever detail of my cabinets there is a lot I would do differently lol. Unfortunately the quality would plumit because I would have to run my business according the the rules you just spoke of.
I hope this doesnt come as an offense. When dealing with the big box stores you are spot on. But if you think that a smaller shop would be ripping you off or building crappy stuff because he doesn't follow the same rules you would be mistaken. Also the strongest and best cabinets out there would never be RTA. They would need an expert's hand from design to final install
I appreciate your taking the time to write this very detailed comment. When I produced this video I considered only cabinets sold online or at big box stores because I felt that the vast majority of people were purchasing their cabinets this way. I am not surprised by the quality of your build.

I want to be like you. I loved wood and metal work at school but never tried to learn more or put myself in that environment in my adult life. I remember my resistant materials teacher asking me to show some boys in my class to show them my welding technique, and they were so embarrassed that a girl was showing them.
So I’ve been looking up some carpentry and home reno courses in my area to build some confidence and learn new skills. And I will be building a workshop in my back garden(yard). Your videos have given me faith that women can indeed do anything they put their mind to.

I looked at the price of quality cabinets and decided to learn how to make my own - it was a lot more complicated than I thought, but in the end I'm glad I did it, and now I've learned a very useful skill that I can use time and time again
full overlay cabinets are just yummier 😍 generally if you decide on custom , the drawers can be made a few inches longer and still fit a standard size cabinet
