Small mistake in the video at around 2:00, you can not buy expansions for Gems (only upgrade to Deluxe Editions). You need to buy expansions with real money.
I agree. The experience I used to have when exploring Tyria by foot had it's charm and sometimes I miss that because I more often remembered to slow down and take in the views. Mounts make me feel as if I'm always in a rush to get somewhere. However, the mounts also add SO much to the game, that I don't think I'd want to go back to when we didn't have them at all.
Not sure if this is unique to GW2, but I like the Gathering system because you don't have to fight other people for nodes. And the gathering tools that you can also tweek for extra items.
Great video! Perfect for recruiting ppl. XD Just let me add one correction about the Black Lion Shop, you cannot buy expansions from there, just expansion "upgrades" and Living world. The expansions themselves are only avaliable through direct purchase with real world money.
I would also add how easy it is to play PvP. You don't need separate PvP gear or grind for a PvE one. Everyone has access to the same items to build their character from the Equipment tab. You can queue for a match from anywhere. It has a practical lobby/map to test your build and it is easy to travel to it and back from anywhere through the PvP window. You can get PvE loot from the PvP reward tracks, which they also give Tomes of Knowledge to level up your character. You can make legendary armor from PvP too. And in my opinion the 5v5 Conquest mode is the best for PvP.
How come you don't talk about one of the best features in this game? The freedom the game gives you, Gw2 is the only mmorpg that let's you do what you want when you want, you don't have to raid, do dungeons or pvp, or even lvl up, I have 2 characters of every single class and I only lvled 1
Been a heavy player for 11 years and one thing you didn't mention was how friendly the community is. Players often boast about it in forums and social media about how the community loves to help and there is very little toxicity (though granted a lil more in PvP). Truly an amazing game and no guilt in trying it out since base game is free.
I guess it's not on the list because FF14 is also known for it's amazing community. While the ones he listed are objective, one's experience with the community is subjective. Therefore, it's community can't truly be deemed "better" than the other 3 games'. As someone who has played both GW2 & FF14, I can honestly say both communities are great, but both have their share of negative/trolling players. GW2 is worse when it comes to PvP, and sometimes trying to get into a party for high end content. FF14 is worse for using party finder and getting stuck with a veteran TANK who rushes through a dungeon and a gets annoyed at the newer players. But of course, while this happens in both, these moments aren't often and 95% of the experience is positive in both.
Your definitely correct, the community is amazing. There are some other games out there that also have smaller, tight-nit communities also though, so it's somewhat subjective
The thing about the Quest-structure is that it only creates a bad illusion that the world is living since in practicality the world is dead unless there's a player around to activate it. You cannot buy the expansion with gems so neither with gold, what you can get with gems is an upgraded version of it, let’s say you bought the standard edition of a given expac you can spend gems to get the extra goodies like the dragon skiff in eod case. Expansions secure some real income for the studio so they can’t realistically give away them expansions for gameplay currency.
There is a lot to add I feel but we can all agree that GW2 is the best MMO on the market rn and people dont even know! But yeah, you can play anything you want :P
One thing that you should have spent more time explaining is the mastery system. Other games do not have such a system(to my knowledge), so only lightly mentioning it is understating how important it is for numerous reasons. Not to mention that every expansion has its own mastery system, so that you cannot learn Raven Attunement mastery in Secrets of the Obscure maps, or Skyscale mount mastery in Heart of Thorns maps. That means that your character/s need/s to go to specific map sets to train specific masteries that they want(or need) to have. And each expansion brings its own charm to the game, making people *want* to stay and continue playing. The only downside to the mastery system are the mastery points that you need to get to unlock those masteries. It's an understatement when I say that getting those points is infuriating for me, because a lot of points can only be gained through specific achievements, some of which are exhaustingly difficult to get, or take a long time(and a lot of work) to complete.
I think gw2 is better than others mmo's in various aspects, but is not perfect. I mostly play PvP and WvW and it's clear how "abandoned" these modes are tough the potecial they have.
He has unidentified gear in his bag. I think he was just avoiding accidentally salvaging them (without identifying first!) with "Salvage All". I do the same thing from time to time. haha
I'd say ESO actually has better buildcrafting than GW2 as class specific skills only make up about 1/4 of the total skills you can aquire not to mention the absolute massive variety of gear sets you can get in ESO leading to much more build diversity.
I am a former wow player and new to gw2. I played only Open World quests and stories here, so here are my comments. 7. I really like the fact that I paid for all expansions once and I can play without the urge to "use my purchased time". However, the monetization is pretty well designed from business point of view. The more you play, the more you want to purchase to make your gameplay more convenient (bag slots, additional storage space, more slots for your characters). So basically sooner or later you will want to purchase more from the shop. 6. I love it. Usually I don't have to look for a party, you see an event, you join it and you are having fun. However with larger events it is way more chaotic and less organised comparing to WoW. I also miss the holy trinity setup. I was so disappointed that my Warrior is not supposed to be a tank in this game and Ranger is doing better in that scenario which is weird :p 5. Skills based on the weapons you use is pretty cool, however comparing to WoW it is more limited :) In WoW you always have full range of skills you want to use while here it depends on your weapon and professions. You are responsible whether you will be hit by a skill or not. You can dodge attacks which is cool, but I am still missing some passive statistics like chance to block, parry, miss, increased hit chance. But once you get into the rhythm of the game, there are a lot of fun things to do, and challenges to conquer 💪
Horizontal progression is best for people who like to constantly play at the highest level and constantly train to be better at what you do in the game. For example, speedruns in instance content or getting better at pvp or just solo hard open world enemies. In this case, the game does not artificially block your progress like in other games where you have to raise the level of your character or the level of the items you use, you decide for yourself how much time you want to devote to learning and whether you want to play at a higher level because being better is optional, something you have to decide for yourself, the game doesn't require it
Gw2 is good, but its zero hype compared to WoW or FF14 for a reason. The very first thing mentioned in the video is price. Game is criminally cheap, which at first glance comes as advantage. No.7 I'd agree that gw2 isn't pay to win but by focusing on how you can buy gems with gold, you are skipping over the fact that the opposite is also true. You can swipe your card to buy gems to exchange for gold. Gold can get you some of the best gear in the game (Gen 1 legendaries, all the mats required to level crafting and craft ascended gear, agony resistance infusions, etc). So swiping will still bypass one of the big pillars of endgame, which is legendary/ascended gear grinding. Also, gold can be used to pay for boosts through HT CM and such content. I still see guilds selling boosts all the time so there must be buyers. So, theoretically you could gear a fresh 80 with the best items in the game without even leaving lion's arch by paying real money. The game isn't pay to win because you can't swipe for the best things in game. It's not pay to win because there's no singular definition of winning. And that's why gw2 is great.

Thanks for the comment! I wasn't making the case that GW2 is the best MMO overall, only that is does some things really well, and those things, I argue are better than other games in the genre. Such as Mounts, large scale, open world events etc..
There is no way though to know that gw2 is on 14th place, these websites that claim playercount are most of the times just guessing at least for gw2 since arenanet never publishes active playercount. I think gw2 is in the top 5 most played mmo's right now with wow on 1st place and FFXIV 2nd for sure.
