I suspect Neil Young doesn't give a damn about technique. In every performance he does whatever it takes to convey the emotion of the song. Every time I have seen him he has succeeded in spectacular fashion.
Who needs technique when you have wicked sharp intent, phenomenal tone, great feel for the time, creative rhythmic and melodic musical ideas galore. And a great band that knows their soloist. Showy metronomic technique chops are like a maraschino cherry on a cake. Essentially window dressing. Listening to technique chops obsessed musicians (a la eddie van halen, neil peart, malmsteen etc.) is like ordering cake and receiving a jar's worth of red cherries neatly arranged on a silver platter.

Love the song with a powerful message. Great songwriting back in the’60s and early’70s especially about war and injustice. There’s a lot of hip-hop that talks about injustice but in my opinion you can’t beat great guitar players or riffs in those songs. Just my thoughts but I am 65 and grew up during the war and had a brother killed in Vietnam. Injustice against people of color today is the same as then. Really thought our country would get better, but just look at the country today.

Neil Young is a melodic genius, but I personally don’t like the message or tone of this song. He said he doesn’t like this song either. It sounds pretty condescending and trying to start trouble. Just my opinion.
