Mercedes 500SL R129 Removing Hard Top My Way

So its time again to remove my hard top, today I just want to exercise the system, seems if you don't the soft top system always has a hiccup, happened today!

I read the hood pad is for fire protection, if engine fire it disintegrates and smothers the fire. A good idea if true.
