almost a year ago i went on a first date with a guy from a dating website. we went out to eat and then jumped in my miata for a quick touge run to this gorgeous spot perfect for stargazing. i had recently started listening to win96 and turned on this album hoping hed be impressed by my music taste 😅 about 10 seconds into the first track he said "this kinda reminds me of this really obscure JRPG for the playstation". i said "wait... are you talking about Legend of Dragoon ?" it blew our minds the other knew what we were talking about. less than a week later we started a new file and finished it in a couple of months. ten months later were well on our way to moving in together, and although i like to think we wouldve connected either way, i like to believe win96 made it happen ❤️

It's actually pretty easy to achieve. A simple tape delay at 8th or 16th timing slapped directly on to the signal chain, not bussed like usual, and you're good to go/in the ballpark.

Just the peaceful sounds, mesmerizing my brain. It makes me feel like I'm a kid again, getting lost in an endless world of dreams. It's extremely hard to describe, but that's about how well I can describe how I feel when listening to this album.

idk if this sounds like a strange way to describe it, but this album feels so....cosy. i'm in a million different places at once. one moment, i'm a yuppie, walking down a bustling city street with my briefcase in one hand and a mobile phone in the other. another moment, i'm a human detached from western society, standing underneath a waterfall in a tropical rainforest. another moment, i'm just a kid playing videogames in the living room during a family reunion, laughing with cousins i don't even know, while the adults chat about grown-up things and drink wine in the kitchen. it's a whole experience, and somehow i've managed to stumble across what feels like a 16-bit quest game while searching for studying music on the internet. isn't it so cool how we've all just gathered here? and we're tapping into all of our minds, reaching out on the world wide web, for someone to talk with, or even just acknowledge our existence. look at us all. i think this is what real connection is like. a digital, synthesised experience, but fueled by real emotion. wow

I'm back again, 3 years after discovering this album. back in fall of 2020, my vaporwave obsession was going strong after many years, and finding this album was like discovering a precious gem. I have listened to it many since then over the last few years even as my tastes have changed some, it's all just so good. Many people here say this music reminds them of DKC, same for me, but add in some good old Chrono Trigger-esque games in as well. I want so so badly to make some sort of video game with this album as part of the soundtrack, but I sadly don't know how to make a game. It's okay though, just listening to the music is so much fun.

Before I realized Windows96 is just someone incredibly devoted to vaporwave and recreating the sound of early digital music, I assumed this was gonna be one of those musical projects where it starts off as nice sounding before gradually devolving into a jarring wall of noise, like Everywhere at the End of Time and its various copies. The signs were all there, and I was somewhat uneasy on my first listen. But since then I've grown to love it and it's basically my first choice for vaporwave albums, like quickly becoming friends with someone after a period of tension. Like the video game soundtracks that inspired it, this album displays certain quirks of 90s tracker systems that simply add character and charm, though I can totally see how it may be seen as "creepy" at times.

Yeah that might be the best Vaporwave song I've heard. Really cuts to the heart of the whole thing; you can see the whole plastic utopia sliding into oblivion, feel all the complex grief for that dying dream which was likely always an empty promise but which was beautiful nonetheless, which is rendered ironically and bitterly enough MORE beautiful for not coming true in the end, preserved in the unreality it was born in forever.

Play the N64 zelda's and mario 64 and you'll see what I mean. It's like they sound so strange and inhuman that you're just perfectly charmed when you realize that they're friendly and they hit all the notes that you remember from your dreams.
