One of my all-time favorite climbing stories. I climbed with Bachar in the 90s. He was larger than life to me. Cocky and ascerbic at times, yet kind and fun in others, he was a complex individual who I could never really get a solid read on ... except for one thing ... he loved to climb. We would talk for hours about training and ethics and his days in Camp 4. And then he would get bored and want to talk about music and James Brown and the sax. John ... we miss you.
I had the privilege of knowing Tobin Sorenson casually as a college classmate. I was a beginning rock climber. Tobin was the friendliest, most humble, and positive person. RIP.
He's still out there on some unnamed wall in the hereafter, now he doesn't need to put his life in danger to satisfy an adrenaline high because up there you are already as high as you can go rip John you are an inspiration to all of us mere mortals climbing for affirmation in a uncertain world, until we meet again you are who we aspire to be

Thank you for all your contributions to the sport. Love your books.
Great story, keeping it real, talking the real stuff. Gonna share in my bouldergymn good for the modern climbers a bit of oldschool diet

Outstanding!
John Long is one of my favorite climbers and definitely number 1 story teller :) just curious, what route did Bachar solo on El cap?
I'll have to ask him. Thanks for the comment! I'll reply as soon as I get an answer.
Digital Stoke Media Awesome Thanks!!
Digital Stoke Media Did you get an answer?
Pretty sure he meant “an el cap day” meaning he did the vertical equivalent of el cap in a day, not the actual cliff.
they were in j-tree... they did an equivalent of half dome: 20 pitches. the next day bachar soloed an equivalent of el cap which is more like 30.
Nice! Largo - glad you made it...
Amazing writing! What a story! Yikes!
Any way I could get the names of the backing music in this one?
Super WHOA!
Love you John. 🔥
Yes. This is it. The only blasphemy. Thank you, John Long.
