I volunteered to help with an ice climbing festival up Provo Canyon, Utah in 2001. We set up some scaffolding and ran water hoses along the top which eventually formed a 30 ft tower of ice for beginners to try. I was standing there watching people try ice climbing for the first time when an old man came up to me and told me he liked my army surplus wool pants that I had been climbing in. He called them “old school” when in truth it was all I could afford as a young college student. I asked him if he had tried climbing the tower of ice yet to which he replied something like, “no way, that stuff is crazy”. I told him it wasn’t as hard as it looked and that he should give it a try. He then said, “I’m just kidding around. I do a fair bit of ice climbing. I spend my summers in Alaska and my winters in Patagonia.” I thought to myself, wow this guy has the life! When I walked away to join my climbing buddies who were looking on they asked me what Jim Donini and I were talking about. Had no idea I was shooting the breeze with a legend.
Discovered this channel today, and listened to Jim Donini's story of Malcom Daly's incredible survival of a 200' ice climbing fall and surviving two nights out alone with broken legs....my God! I'd never heard the full story, though I'd seen Malcom many times, working at Neptune Mountaineering in the years afterwards...such heart, such courage!
I remember meeting you in North Vancouver for a BCMC event and dinner where you were presenting. Not only was that a great night to hear your tales about Patagonia, but it was a pleasure having a beer with you. An inspiration you are Jim!!
Donini...enigmatic, ICONIC, true HardMan... comes across as salty & snarky as hell on SuperTopo with opinions on EVERY FUCKING THING ..... and one of the Original 5.12 Climbers ..... oh ya ...I also believe he was in 7th Special Forces Group while in the Army. He’s a great example of Climbing as a WorldView & always investing in the Community. May his health & strength never give out as he continues to live the Climbers Life

@MADDLAD Been there done that son. Lived in Anchorage for 18 years. Climbed Denali at 19. Skied Denali at 20. Guided and traversed Denali as well before you were a tadpole in your daddy swimming nut to nut.
