Born and raised in MTL here. Honestly, I've never understood youngsters obsession with painting a picture of the city as if it were some sort of mini New York or Chicago trying to emulate whatever phuckery going on south of the borders. Most of us, intelligent, mature, employed millennials with purposeful lives, know that we are incredibly lucky and grateful to live here and would never EVER live in any other city. Montreal was, is and, God willing, will forever be the safest big city in all of North America!

I grew up in Montreal and can attest to the fact that it’s a safe city. Sure, there are some “tough” neighborhoods but it doesn’t begin to compare to some American cities in terms of crime thankfully. That said, if you really want to delve into the world of organized crime here, start with the mafia, as most shootings here, especially recently, are “mafia-related”. The Montreal mafia has a long and brutal history.

Montreal from the 70s - early 90s really used to be like that, a lot of people really don't know. Back in 1975, Montreal's homicide record was 112, the population was around 1,080,545 in 1976, giving the city a homicide rate of around 10.4 per 100,000. To put it into perspective, New York in 1997 had 770 homicides with a population of 7,383,000 people giving NYC a homicide rate of 10.4 per 100,000 people. In 1989, Montreal hit a second peak with 96 murders (around 9.5 per 100,000). Even in 2001 (years after the peak in homicides), Montreal had 66 murders, with a murder rate of around 6.3 per 100,000 people, compared to NYC's 8.1 in the same year. Montreal was (& still kinda is) a VERY active city, with multiple levels crime groups ranging from, the Mafia like the Rizzuto crime family, Irish mobs like the West End gang, & not to mention Blood sets like "Les Bo-Gars" (who are located in Montreal-Nord, which in modern-day is considered the most dangerous hood in the city) & Crip sets like the "Crack Down Posse". Montreal kinda went through the same thing New York went through, where both cities were one of the worst in their own respective country from the 70s-90s, but in the modern-day, both cities are considered one of the safest major cities in North America (& possibly the world too).

It feels like 1/3 of the city are college students. 1/3 recent immigrants that arrived less then 5 years ago. 1/3 are expats-rich parents kids-fancy diploma workers
And there is no historic soul. Almost everyone i knew that live in toronto back in 2016. All left for windsor london kingston st catharines ottawa calgary winnipeg or some random small ontario town 😂
Montreal at least. Most people still live in it or very near by. It has a historic soul. People who lived in montreal back in like 2008 2009. Probably still live in it or very near by

Both are major port cities, so yes, that’s where the ships dock that bring all the drugz’n’gunz. Montreal historically has mad mafia presence too. There’s hood.

Winnipeg's crime rate is actually very similar to that of Los Angeles'. Looking at last years crime statistics in 2022, Winnipeg's homicide rate was around 7.2 per 100k compared to Los Angeles' 9.9 per 100k. Winnipeg's robbery rate was actually quite higher than Los Angeles' with a rate of 321 per 100k to LA's 236 per 100k. Winnipeg's sexual assault rate was unfortunately much higher, 118.3 per 100k to LA's 36.2 per 100k. & Winnipeg's aggravated assault rate was also pretty comparable, 425.8 per 100k to Los Angeles's 519.1 per 100k. There was gap in the shootings rates between the two cities in 2021 with Winnipeg having a shooting rate of 24.8 per 100k to Los Angeles having a shooting rate of 37.4 per 100k & that's only for the violent crimes. The property crimes was and still is high as well. From the early 1990s to the mid-2000s, Winnipeg had a significant auto-theft problem, with the rate peaking at 2,165.0 per 100,000 residents in 2006.
A lot of people think that because Canada is safer in the US that means there's no bad areas there, when there's in fact a lot of violence in some Canadian neighborhoods, it just doesn't get the same coverage/reputation, because the US is the next door neighbor and because of the Canadians are "nice" stereotype. A lot of hoods in Canada are grimey & very comparable to American inner cities. (Obviously not to the same extent as a St. Louis, Jackson, MS or New Orleans but that should obviously go without saying)
