Affordable homes are great on so many levels but does not move the needle on the homeless crisis. 68% of U.S. cities report that addiction is a their single largest cause of homelessness. “Housing First” initiatives are well intentioned, but can be short-sighted. A formerly homeless addict is likely to return to homelessness unless they deal with the addiction.

@@funjoe79 "Housing first" is only the first step. The VA has done extensive studies that all end up showing that housing *first*, then followed by wraparound services like addiction and mental health treatment, help people make the transition back into society.

This is definitely a step up from the sheds currently in use by some programs. It is more client friendly by offering private kitchens and bathrooms rather than relying on shared facilities. While the bathroom allows for use for someone in a wheelchair the bathtub/shower combo seems to be out of place. A barrier free shower would be more suitable for someone with mobility issues.

    • @patriciapage9950
      @patriciapage9950 3 месяца назад +3

I agree. The opening below the sink is great, no barrier there. The toilet needs to be higher and have grab bars. The bathing space needs to be a roll-in shower configuration. Grab bars everywhere. There are simple changes that can accommodate the majority of people without losing the aesthetic.

The hug house seems very functional. I liked that they were very thoughtful in considering the needs of someone in wheelchair. I loved that there was a shower-tub combo, but was concerned that if one were in a wheelchair that wouldn't be practical. For those individuals, a roll-in shower would probably be better. Not everyone has someone to help them in get in and out of a tub. But overall, it's awesome.

It's a good practical design, definitely a much better choice than being homeless, or the tent cities, and even som of the other setups for homeless where the unit doesn't have a bathroom, you have to walk to a communal bathhouse. Like the high ceiling. A Murphy bed/sofa would be a good fit, sofa by day, bed at night, more space during the day. There are also bunk bed Murphys, as well as sofas that convert to bunk beds for additional sleeping options. What are the outside dimensions? I'm guessing 10x30x13 at the tallest end of the house.

If I had this home, I would turn it around and have the kitchen pantry closet, or somewhere near the dining room table be the front door, I would also have a porch on each door or a stoop, I would put a Murphy bed on the front wall next to the door. That way you could fold up in the daytime and you still have space for a more open floor and regular furniture People come in through the kitchen they can easily go to the bathroom they can walk into the living room and if your bedroom is the Murphy bed which is down, they don’t have to go that far into the space. I would also move that air conditioner and get the kind that hang up on the wall. With a little bit of changes, this could be a nice home for retail not just for homeless. There seems to be quite enough space for one to two people.
And I didn’t hear a price range for this model
Another topic I wish you could touch on sometime would be actually having property these smaller homes like this would be great if you had a place to put them that was all set up that wasn’t a trailer park something where you own a 10th of an acre without monthly lot fees just like a regular neighborhood
One other thing since you have a handicap sink in the bathroom and that’s also a concern for elderly people. Getting in and out of that bathtub could be hard for people even if they’re not in a wheelchair why they keep putting bathtubs in houses I don’t know, but it would be awesome if the shower or the whole bathroom was a wet room so that if you are in a wheelchair, you can just open the shower door or not even have a shower door and get into the shower on the shower chair

Definitely fan of all their homes in here. Love that they brokered a deal with California. Hopefully that will get them past all of the red tape hurdles. My one and only thought for improvement would be placement and shape with regards to the Heating and Air. It seems like the most inefficient place to put the unit is near the front door which has so much traffic. Also, during the winter, it would seem difficult to keep the home warm because it would rise to the upslope end of the home. Also, I'm not sure that I would want the bedroom to be the first thing that people walk into. Almost seems like the building is the opposite of what would be most ideal.
After all, if I am having a guest (social worker), I would want them to enter my dining room area first to sit. But there may be reasons and this is meant to be a transitional home, so I could understand the goal of not making it too comfy, lol.

I don’t think Hug house passed California building code with only one door. Granted, the door is by the bed, but what if you leave something on the stove while you shower? How will you get out?
The question I always have before price is how wide is it? I need to know if it will fit in my yard.

As a 60+ who owns my home outright, I would LOVE to be able to place that Tiny home on a small amount of land as a permanent home. My home is killing me with taxes (IL), repairs, and general replacement of systems and upkeep.
I will have to work until I die. Not having a 75 year old house to worry about would be fantastic. It is not a large house, but it requires more work than I want at my age.

This would be much more than I would need permanently. I live in a van now and can't increase my income much due to illness. My city has not allowed any deeply affordable housing into the community. The city even inacted a law making it illegal to live in a van on the street but have not enforced the law against me after a legal complaint of my was dismissed because the city had not ticketed me, and still haven't. So being active in city government and the state putting pressure on cities maybe places like this can be allowed sometimes soon. One thing that is a must is the ability to own the land which a place like this sits. Otherwise corporations will buy up all the lots and jack up the rent like mad. This is what has happened in all the legacy mobile home parks in my city. Exclusionary zoning must be abolished.

I think this is a great idea. Would love to see many communities with large numbers of these units in them, and perhaps a "community center" that has a laundry area and a large space where residents can have community parties or reserve the space to entertain family and friends. I like your Murphy bed idea, Kerry, or perhaps a loft bed with another bed that rolls out from underneath for a child.

What a fantastic video showing some options for housing that is also affordable. I say affordable without knowing the price tag. But. I kept hearing a 'but' without one actually being said. It's usually following the words, 'At first glance'. The homeless or non-profit option last is nice but it's not exactly pretty and that one small closet is not going to store a heck of a lot. However, I would probably purchase it and I don't make much per month. At the middle of the video, the manager of the company or project went down the line and stated that this lot of homes were for employee housing and then this over here was for manager housing. There in lies the difference. I used to live in employee housing and now I live in my own RV while developing my property to live on. CEO's make a ton of money and even GMs make a ton of money in comparison with the employees who are paid just enough to keep them from drowning and chained to the 'comany store'. Just one of the reasons for the state of homelessness here in the US. One of the richest nations on earth but can't pay their employees enough of a living wage to own their own home. I didn't just make this up. It's in this video if you look close enough to see the difference.

But these are cool, but that's my opinion, sorry dude I like your shows, you are coolest😊

This is definitely what we need more in the communities. This unit is big enough and wide enough to put a small bedroom at the back, with the washroom next. There will be enough space for kitchen and sitting room in the front.
To be a home I just don't like the living room having a bed in it. No price was mentioned, which if you are promoting as good salutation please include the price.
INCREDIBLE TINY HOMES is very up front about the cost of his units and I would like to compare to his.
I love his layouts and an INCREDI-BOX box is 8 x 16 and is still I think between 25 to 30 thousand depending on the amenities. He had model homes for 60,000 plus dollars and the layouts, craftsmanship, and prices are next to none. Tennessee is pretty central in the USA.

It would be helpful to have walk in showers available for those of us who cannot step over tubs. I wonder about slope to front. Would slope to back be better? I am happy to see their positive efforts in providing shelter for the homeless!

Accessibility in the bath needs improving. Whole thing needs to be a wet room with zero tub , and remove the wooden sides under the sink someone could catch their leg on.
The closet could be a walk-in with an angled entrance to maximize flow and storage. Alternately the kitchen could be an L shape with the water heater tucked in the corner, just move the door to the bathroom or flip the kitchen with the closet.
Cabinets reaching up higher also makes better use of limited space...

Great vid. I wonder what made them position the windows like that? If this is a static design, then the house is really only suitable in spaces where it has access on all 3 sides (four? there's a light on the back but no window there). All the windows face the sides and there's none in the front wall where the door is. These are strange choices, but I can see how they're meant to maximise bulk placement on a lot with lots of air flow and negative spaces between them and without having a single window face into each other (sides or front and back), which I guess is great for giving a sense of space and privacy.
I wonder if they'll release a reversible design where the windows are all on one side so that buildings can be placed back-to-back to save lot space?
That air con unit in the front wall bugs the crap out of me though! It's such a loss of usable space. I also don't get why they put a hinge door on the wardrobe rather than sliding mirrored doors. Perhaps they intentionally chose a heavier duty design to reduce maintenance? :/
