Hey mate you are definitely my favourite VW channel to watch and possibly my favourite RUclips channel but Sarah N Tuned is great too, so maybe it's a tie. I've gained heaps from your efforts so please keep it up. Much appreciation from the land down under!
Next time, I recommend that you ream the hole before cutting the end of the tube off...that way the original bore will help you keep everything in line as it easy to get it out of line using the drill while sat on the floor. Great video though, keep up the good work
Yes I kept the needle bearing, these are far superior "in my opinion" to the poly type inserts. There are some other bushing made of Delrin that are pretty nice.
I appreciate your reply. It’s hard to decide what to replace my chopped beam with. I like the CB performance 2” narrowed with needle bearings and I like the Airkewld 4” narrowed but the bummer is no needle bearings
That is most likely an inexpensive reamer and its good you got great results...However... There is a better way to use it. The typical method is to adjust it so it is slightly too small, take a pass, then increase the diameter and the cut slowly. In your case maybe 7-10 passes or more to do a 1/8" cut. You creep up on the press fit tolerances that you need. The result will be very round holes with uniform and parallel sides. Your reamer will also last a lot longer too.
Yes. this adjustable reamer was pretty cheap compared to something pro level. This was definitely my first time venturing into something like this and was pretty happy with the results considering. That is some good info there and 100% correct on making multiple passes... live and learn my friend.
@@JWClassicVW Thank you for putting yourself out there with a great subject and successful channel. It is not easy to do and takes great effort. Keep going, we are all learning from the work you are doing. I learned to use a reamer on bicycle seat tubes. I build custom bicycle frames and after welding the seat tube where the seat post enters, it is not to size and loses its roundness so you have to open it up again. Its a high precision operation to +- 0.02". Another tip with the reamer is to be very careful when adjusting or when disassembling them for cleaning. The blades are high carbon steel and very brittle. If you drop one, chances are it will break...ask me how I know! So adjustments should be 1/8 turn at a time.
This was needed for my VW because of the added offset added with the new front disc brakes. The narrowed beam allows the wheels and tires to fit under the fenders correctly.
Just got a 4” narrowed beam I haven’t done this before can I use the same stock trilling control arms with my 4” beam ? Like I say in new to do this I also get a pair of 2” 1/2 drop spindles somebody tell me don’t to install those cause the bug will be on the floor so I think I will just install the beam mistakes jajajaja hope this turns up well
Hey brother thanks for the question... and as for using your stock torsion arms, YES! Great question to, I'm sure lot's of people have that one. As for the drop spindles, you can use those to, even if your new beam isn't adjustable. The reason why people narrow the beam is to fit the tires under the fenders when using drop spindles. Would love to see some pics... Join the Facebook group and share!
Definitely not the original, it was an Empi 2 inch narrowed beam but I cut another 1.5 inches off both sides so now it's more like a 3.5 inch narrowed beam.
It is the 2" narrowed front stabilizer from CIP1, I just cut it down on both sides to get it to fit. Also had to use ratcheting straps to pull it into place. A little scary but worked... didn't video that because I don't want people killing themselves...lol
@@JWClassicVW cut how or is there a video i should go looking for . . . I'm swapping out my beam for a 4" narrowed beam and i want to run a swau bar also.

I’m so glad I bought a narrowed beam instead of making one lol. Good job doing it with the beam still attached to the car!
Thanks man!! Yup having the 4" narrowed beam would have been cool, but this worked out well!
We like goosing around with our bug's! 😜 You don't shy away from anything...👍
Lol... yes!! So true man... love a challenge!
Cool project JW Classic VW, you made it look easy! Isn't it crazy how one mod leads to another? It's the gift that keeps on giving!
This is the story of modifications!! 😆 Thanks for being here brother!!
NICE INFORMATION THAT YOU SHARE HERE JW
It's nice to see you do it in a normal size garage off the floor with not much room like must of us have to :)
So true! I live on the concrete brother!!

great Job bro well done

Excellent job. Could you tell how many percent of softness is lost compared to the original suspension. Thanks
oh it's a pretty big difference, but I love the feel

Great video!! I'm going to try and install an Empi 2" adjustable beam on my 59 Ragtop. Wish me luck..
Glad you liked the video brother!! Good luck on the beam install, I'm sure it will go great!

I'm gonna send a couple beams to League City for you to narrow. Heheheeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Lol... thats funny, half the time I'm not completely sure things are going to work until they do... then I'm like dang... that WORKED!
Great work. That saw is a "Sawzall" or " Reciprocating saw". A Skillsaw is a worm-drive unit similar to a "circular saw" but far superior.
Thanks for the info!

Thanks for the good video and knowledge....
You bet!
She’s looking good
Thanks brother, she is looking FINE!!!
Great videos!! Where did you find a 4” narrowed sway bar? Thanks
Made it out of a 2" narrowed sway bar.
Great video. I’m also looking at a narrowed beam. Did you need to make any mods to the steering geometry? And how does your set-up handle?
Did you reuse the needle bearings in your beam? If yes, why did you choose that over just a Urethan bushing?
Yes I kept the needle bearing, these are far superior "in my opinion" to the poly type inserts. There are some other bushing made of Delrin that are pretty nice.

I haven't experienced the Airkewld beams but they look awesome!
@@JWClassicVW do you have an inner bushing in your beam that you have to replace? If yes, what tool is used for that?
No inner bushing, just the bearing.
How shorten beam affected in sharp turn in Hollywood Bowl. In straight I guess no worry...
Everything is good to go... no problems turning.
Interesting what brake kit is that please.
This brake kit is the Bad Brake kit from Airkewld... I did a video on it as well!

Did you have to shorten you tie rods
Nope.. I already had the tie rods for a 2" narrowed beam and those worked.

Hey Jason, did you find any noticeable stiffening of the suspension after narrowing the leaf stack?
No I would say the ride is just about as it would be stock, I do have an adjustable beam and 2.5 drop spindles as well.
@@JWClassicVW Thanks Jason. I'm only 1.5 inches static drop but I may go lower so it's handy to know, cheers :)
What does narrowing do to the bug?
This was needed for my VW because of the added offset added with the new front disc brakes. The narrowed beam allows the wheels and tires to fit under the fenders correctly.
