Thanks for the explanation on retention ponds. I see them all over the place, but never really knew what their purpose was or how they are designed to work. And, your explanation of why cat tails and other plants are in these ponds is fascinating. Very cool info! 🙏
The road sign says no bicycles permitted on the road; the pedestrian sign says bicycles must stay to the right on the sidewalk. It's fairly common to prohibit bicycles from automobile thoroughfares. It's unusual not to prohibit bicycle riding on pedestrian walks of way.
Great explanation of retention ponds, and of the beneficial effects of cattails. The only problem the ponds is that they are a poor substitute for the original landscape. I live just outside Pittsburgh, and everybody who lives north of the city knows about McKnight Road. It was always a commercial corridor, but starting in the 80's, developers decided it would be a great idea to pave over every single square inch of ground that could house a mall, strip mall, store or shop. The developers, engineers and township supervisors (a couple of whom should have gone to jail for accepting "gifts" from the developers) allowed for just enough retention ponds to comply with Pennsylvania regulations, the result being that any significant rain storm is accompanied by flash flooding on certain areas along the corridor.
You brought back forgotten memories with this one. Going with my Granddad and sitting in the car while it got washed. It was a real treat! I thought the ponds by new builds and roads were just for wildlife. Thank you for explaining. x

Power lines generate heat and that's one reason why they're seen overhead on large power poles. Also, being in open air it helps to dissipate the heat that's generated. It would, also, cost millions to switch them to underground utiltes.

I've also heard of those retention ponds being called "settle ponds" which, to me, better explains their purpose.
These Retention Ponds do both, a settle pond doesn't necessarily have to be empty before a rainfall unless it is there to restrain water
