    I purchased a Tudor Submariner (Rolex backing plate ) when I was on R&R in Taiwan from Vietnam in 1968. I chose the Tudor for $95.00 over the stainless GMT Master which sold for $125.00 ! I purchased a GMT Master in gold and stainless in 1986 and paid $3200 at the time so I think they were both good investments. Just had both serviced for the first time this month.

    Excellent advice sir.
    For myself, I purchase high quality second-hand clothing from Savvy Row. (They sell second-hand Saville Row suits. ) I also buy from Chester Cordite who makes 1940s reproductions. I tend to prefer the 1940s styles. For good quality hats I recommend Laird Hatters. For outdoor hats I use Akubra and a 15” diameter basque beret.
    With regards to watches I prefer Omega and Grande Seiko. Rolex make excellent watches, but I prefer to wear something that is not immediately identifiable.

    I'm still young so I can't afford a Rolex or other luxury branded watches but I do currently have 2 watches that was passed down from my grandpa. I do not know the date of those watches but I have a Rolex Day Date yellow gold and a Patek Phillipe Gondolo 18k white gold. Although I don't think I've ever worn them and just keep them and admire them. The only watch I wear on a few occasions is a vintage Soviet watch.

    Really good advice ref the Submariner Ash. Almost identical to my relationship with my AD and as I mentioned previously I picked my Submariner up a little under two weeks ago after waiting just over six months for it. Although I did previously have a Rolex purchase history I always have dealt with the same guy and generally passed on my thanks to the Manager of the AD too.

      I still vehemently state that the best way to access a new Rolex from an AD is through building a positive human relationship. I was offered a new and totally unexpected new Rolex from my AD this week and that was entirely based on my relationship opposed to anything else...... Yes, it was a Rolex professional........ Yes, I bought it!
      By the way, my AD mentioned that they were quoting a 5-year wait for Submariners at the moment..... and growing by the day.

    Regarding the Rolex watch, I'd go for it if you really want it. Worst case scenario: your name comes up and you don't have the money yet, you don't buy it. Like Ash says, I'd loan the money or charge my creditcard and make 40/50% profit doing it.

    I particularly enjoyed your thoughts on the traits of a gentleman in the modern age. And I believe there is actually a deep connection between your definition and the definition of centuries past: While the "gentile homme" used to be defined as a man who doesn't have to work for a living (because of his inherited, noble status), this notion is still somewhat echoed in the "detachment from current circumstances", that we expect from a man we would consider to be a gentleman; a friendliness and openness that can only be achieved by a certain sovereign indifference towards the unnerving aspects of day-to-day life.
    You brits seem to have a natural inclination towards this mindset, I (as a german) have to work a little bit harder for that. But I'm trying to do my best. ;)
    Kind regards!

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  2 года назад

      I really enjoyed your own, rather philosophical thoughts around the traits required of the modern gentleman. I am inclined to agree entirely. It is easy to offer benevolence and fine etiquette when one is without personal want (wealth), yet it is another thing for a man struf=ggling in life to display the same qualities. Hence it seems that only financially comfortable chaps can be gentlemen? - I disagree to a point, but I have to say that I know fewer men, who have to graft hard for their livelihood, who have the time and resources needed to be defined as gentlemen.

  • @byN91
    @byN91 2 года назад

    Hi Ash! May I ask your help one more time. This is about shoes sizing. Ive made a research on this, and one thing caught my attention is this - I copy&paste
    "Knowing this, you can adjust your shoe sizing and still find something that will fit. Size up a width and down a length to get the same volume; or size down a width and up a length to do the same. Last year, for example, I really wanted a certain pair of black oxfords, but my usual size in this model (8E) always sells out during sale season. So, I sized down to a 7.5 and increased the width to an EE (which in the UK is the slightly bigger size than E). Few people are shopping for a size 7.5EE, so I was able to snag a perfectly fitting pair at a good discount."
    End of quote
    Can i follow that method? I am not able to purchase bnew shoes so I shop on eBay with very limited options, if that works, good on my part.
    Thanks!!

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  2 года назад

      A good question - I have found that no 2 manufacturers of footwear have the same definition of a standard size. I take a UK 8 size and this varies from company to company (although most of the better Northamptonshire brands are pretty standardised). It is always best to try before you buy (although not possible with ebay). Once I find a manufacturer which suits my foot, I tend to favour that as my shoe provider, as their last sizes are usually very similar across the range.

    I could weep for the guy who wants a Submariner. The reality is _most_ Rolex ADs will never sell him this watch unless he has a hefty spend history. There are a few (such as a certain store in the South West of England that Ash and I both know) where people who have a modest SH and who live locally may be put on a genuine waiting list - but then one is looking at waiting times running into 12, 18 or 24 months...or more... By then Rolex price increases may very well see the retail price nudging towards the grey market price of today. I absolutely hate saying this, but it might be better just to buy one from the grey market :-(
    EDIT - this is assuming that absolutely HAS to have that Submariner. It might be best to understand the we are victims of a mad hype, and that a Rolex watch is not - objectively speaking - any better than a modern Omega...

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  2 года назад

      I paid a very pleasant visit to our favourite store on Monday and was told it would take at least 5-years to fill an order for a Sub at the present time. Even when I was in the store taking delivery of my new piece, an American gentleman (presumably a foreign visitor) came in to the shop and asked for a Sub or a GMT. I was told that they receive numerous such enquiries every day.
      By the way, my new wrist furniture is doing rather well. I honestly don't even remember ever asking for this model, but I certainly wasn't going to decline such a piece in the current climate. It's turning out to be a better watch than I expected on the jubilee.

      @@TheChapsGuide Regarding Submariners, the folks at M. put me on the list for a 124060 the same day that it was released (about a year ago now??) At the time they told me that I might be able to get one considerably quicker from another AD who "does business differently". I can think of a couple where there would probably be an 'Italian style deal' to be done - but I've decided to just sit tight and wait. As Mr Manders said: I do have enough other nice watches to be going on with! :-D

A certain AD here in South West England where both Ash and I are customers have an extremely old school approach to honoring waiting lists chronologically though - they are unusual in that regard.)
