Hi guys, beras kencur is one of our jamu concoction. It's generally made from kencur (cutchery/sand ginger) cinnamon, roasted rice, palm sugar, pandan for aroma.

15:15 The drink is called Beras Kencur (Beras = rice, kencur= galangal) or Gelangal Rice or Rice Kencur and is a type of JAMU or Indonesian traditional herbal medicine. Rice kencur is a refreshing drink typical of Java. This drink is also classified as Indonesian traditional herbal medicine or we called Jamu, because it has properties to increase appetite. Kencur rice is very popular because it has a sweet and fresh taste.
The main ingredients of kencur rice, of course rce (mashed) and kencur rhizome. The combination of rice and kencur contains a lot of vitamine B which can stimulate the stomach to give you a feeling of hunger. In addition, the herbal rice kencur if taken regularly every day can help thicken the stomach wall to cure ulcer disease.
The sweet taste comes from the added brown sugar (coconut sugar or palm sugar). Kencur contributes to the slightly spicy taste that is felt when rice kencur is drunk, to add the spicy taste of this herbal rice kencur, a little bit ginger rhizome is usually added to taste.
The complete herbal rice kencur ingredient consists of: kencur rhizome and rice flour, ginger rhizome, asam kawak/kawak acid (additional), kedaung seeds (additional), salt and brown sugar.

The Bakso reminded me with the conversation i have with my Balinese driver back then. He told me that most Bakso seller are actually not a native Balinese ( mosly Javanese ) , because Balinese have ,in his own words mind you , no skill to make a good Bakso if they did , because Bakso originally made from cow meat , and cow is a sacred animal for the Hindus . He said even if there some 'naughty' hindu people did make it , it just wouldn't taste that good , well i guess it's already engraved in their own subsconciousness that eating cow is bad. Anyway , can't wait to visit Bali again.

Lontong : rice cake commonly wrapped with banana leaves. The other forms are, ketupat/tipat which wrapped with young-yellow banana leaves and bacang/bakcang which filled with seasoned-chicken and wrapped with bamboo leaves. Aneka means variations/assorted. So you were looking at assorted porridges, and those kind of small stalls usually only provide the simple, cheap, to-go sweet type of porridges. The one you had was the mixed mungbean and black rice with coconut milk. Its more filling compared to the second one, which I believe it was Bubur Sumsum. Its made from rice flour, cooked until gooey and has the kind of consistency of a (beef) bone marrow (Sumsum can also be translated to Marrow), and the original white color resembles it even more. Hence the name. The dressing is combination of coconut milk, brown sugar, with tapioca to make it rather gooey, and even so when it gets from a warm to room temperature. The additional "syrup" was called gula aren which is palm sugar, to add sweetness and to balance the gooey-ness, richness, and a kick of aroma of the bubur sumsum for you to adjust to your liking or preference, so to speak.
The first Jamu in the plasric bottle that you had was Kunyit Asam (literally Turmeric Tamarind), quite self explanatory. More "suitable" for women due to its unique characterustic and distinguished effectivity in helping with women's menstrual period. Although it can be consumed by anyone in general. Because its refreshing and sweet.
The second jamu that you had in a glass is called Beras Kencur (Beras means rice, and Kencur means Cutcherry or Sand Ginger). Concocted with ginger for the heat, brown sugar for the sweetness, sometimes simmered with lemongrass for the aromatic and some would use Temulawak (Curcuma) for increasing appetite, especially to kids and teenager. You should have asked the seller to give you a ginger water or honey lemon water as the back drinks to help wash it down and also clear the pallate. Because when it comes to Jamu, in regards to its herbal characteristic, tends to leave quite a strong or some might find unpleasant (bitter) lingering aftertaste in your mouth and throat. In your case, the nutty flavor that you had. You know, things like that. Or maybe you can just somehow "cleanse" it all with a thought that you just had a healthy herbal concoction that is good for your body and stamina without any side effects. Cheers!

I just want to help you understand more about the last drink you guys drunk.
It’s called „jamu.“ a traditional healthy drink from Indonesia.
It was literally made from extract herbs that has been dried out , powdered then distilled and mixed with sugar (could be palm, or white).
There are several type of „jamu“.
„Beras - kencur“ means rice and galanga (aromatic ginger).
    „Jahe“ means normal ginger
As you may understand bit in this video, many people believe by drinking jamu, it will enhance your stamina (which chemically true, because herbs contain a lot of phenolic compounds that are good for our body).
For foreigners, this is the best drink when you’ve such a hard head
-banged cuz too much spirit or drink.
And as you experienced, you can immediately feel „the heat“ after you drink jamu to woken up your body. 🤗

the beras kencur was damn powerful! i wonder if i drink a bit of it everyday i can get too much "heat" in the body?

@@JeanVoronkova Enjoy the jamu every day, it's good for our health and gives us healthy and smooth skin as well. I drank jamu since I was very young, at that time when I got my first period our grandma used to force me to drink jamu to cleanse your stomach and so that we always smell good from inside and many more benefits from jamu that she used to tell me ... Like now I really feel the result haha

@Jean and Vitaly, I think that drink is called "Beras Kencur" - (Rice Kaemferia Galanga)
    .
Beras Kencur is made by a combination of rice (beras not peanut) and aromatic Kaempferia galanga (kencur) as main ingredients. This natural remedy can be used to cure various diseases and as beauty treatments such as whiten skin, skin tightening and to polish hair. It also believes that this natural remedy can enhance male sexual vitality, cure cough and stomach ulcer as well as fatigue.
    .
Stay fun and healthy there in Bali. 😉👍

The jamu in the glass is called Beras Kencur. Beras = Rice, Kencur = Sand Ginger/ Cutcherry / kaempferia galanga / aromatic ginger. It is good for increasing the appetite (for kids), Maintain the blood sugar level, reduce the cough etc.
Also, you can use kencur puree (blender it) and rub it to your body, it has the same effect like hot cream. I tried one time and it works to reduce my swollen ankle.
