I think your willingness to share your experiences offers so much to folk who are striving for dreams. Keep working and balancing your life and sharing. Your success a pleasure.
Last year I came across your channel when I was searching for guys (gays guys preferably) who do ballet because I became interested in it and now I'm back with the same interest. After watching many of your videos I wanna say that I really like them and I'm kinda sad that you haven't uploaded in 10 months. I'm hoping that you'll return because I really like your vlogs.
Me being a Male Ballet Dancer myself (and have been doing it for 9 years now), Tristan has explained some really defined points and he's answered them accurately and honestly!
Since he said that maybe other people who dance can answer some of the comments I'll tell you my experience as a female dancer. I'm not a professional though. So at my school we only had two boys so we also partnered with other girls sometimes. Dancing the female part is kinda the same except maybe that you partner is probably about the same hight as you so that's different to dancing with a guy (also the guys obviously knew better how to hold you the right way than the other girls). Dancing the male part though is a completely different experience. But I'm also really curious what Tristan (or any male dancer) has to say to this question 🙈🤗.
I have partnered guys and been partnered by guys before, usually for a more neoclassical/contemporary piece (I am a male ballet dancer), and I can say that guys are in almost every case much heavier than girls, and thus harder to lift etc. That’s because of different bone density, height, muscle mass. I have a never done a classical piece while partnering a guy, and I imagine that is because doing classical lifts with a guy would come with a lot bigger risk of injury. Same reason that it’s the guys lifting the girls and not vice versa.
It really is awesome you got selected for the Stuttgart ballet. And well deserved. Especially watching you put in the work through all these videos. She's inspirational 😤
When it comes to taking 'breaks', I took two years away from my theatre acting/directing world at one stage 'cos I was just theatred-out! Obviously the physical demands of ballet won't allow this sort of luxury but it did me the world of good!
You're such a natural for video; there's nothing pretentious about you or about the way you describe your life in ballet; it's all matter-of-fact, but it's also laced with humor. I hope a lot of young dancers watch these, because there's so much they can learn (not that old, sedentary non-dancers can't learn as well). You're an inspiration, Tristan; keep up with the vids!
Tristan, I had that pain in my left shoulder blade. I was treated for a pinched nerve in the neck. It took 2 months to heal. When it feels like it's coming back, I wear a neck collar, which I got on amazon.*Velpeau* I wear it at night during sleep. I was also told to walk tall and not slouch. It helps a lot.
Off topic but for any ballet dancers out there: if you don’t already I’d really recommend Pilates that definitely helped me with my pirouettes and fouettés
This is a great one! Your discussion about handling situations that arise in your work, whether injury, vacation, stress, burn-out, or even anticipating big news, strike me as excellent advice that people could apply to almost any job when related situations arise. Congratulations on the full employment contract for the coming year!!
And here's my question for a future Q&A: What happens, in the first instance, to students who aren't chosen as apprentices, and in the second, to the apprentices who aren't chosen for the corps? Are there second chances for any of the dancers in either situation? What a terrible let-down it must be for those who don't make the grade. Thanks for all you do to promote understanding about ballet in general, and about men in ballet in particular.
What 'stats' do you keep on yourself? Not calories eaten etc that's bad. Do you keep an exercise 'stat' book, or just play it by ear or sight, or memory. In terms of workouts and 'things to do'. Your 'shoulder' hurts, can you 'tie' it to something, or overworking. I'm old, but have learned to 'write up' on a calendar once or twice a week my weight, its easier to catch a five pound change than a 20 pound change. If I can't explain the weight gain/loss - I adjust - less beer, more salad. mow the lawn - etc.
Hey Tristan, I 💜 all your videos! I was wondering if you would be willing to do some basic ballet tutorials? As someone growing up that never got a chance to take dance lessons or ever see a ballet, I would love the opportunity to learn a few simple moves and see how those progress as a person advances. I think that would help me, and others who have not taken lessons, better be able to understand and appreciate what you do and the art of ballet in general.
This was good! Not that I could have ever done what you do, but part of me thinks i could have. LOL. Anyway, its nice that you can answer questions posed to you, and let us know more about a male ballet dancer. There were things mentioned that I was not aware of, such as your daily routine during performances, and mandatory shaven face. I guess the rule of thumb is the male ballet form should be smooth. (I'm not opposed to that) I hope you can post more of these, as well as the other videos you post! *hugs* keep doing what you do!
I was wondering if you would be willing to do a general introduction to ballet? I come from a rural, poor area, so I have never seen a ballet and feel pretty intimidated to check one out. It feels like a whole set of information, almost like a language, I don’t know. Thanks for considering this idea for me and any others that might be in the same situation. 🏳️🌈✌️
that would be so cool! I'm a ballet dancer as well, and I started dancing from youtube videos haha. And don't worry about feeling like you won't know something if you go to a ballet one day, we've all been there and though it can seem pretentious I promise you people won't judge you! Also there are some great introduction to ballet videos on youtube in general so if Tristan doesn't make one you can still find the info!
You don't appear to wear a watch, borrow a fit bit like device, see if they can let you wear it at work, for a week. I used to own one, it fell off so I lost it. The key requirement I have to be able to take a shower with one - I rarely take my watch off, most younger people don't wear a watch now they have their phones. The only thing I mostly cared about it was 'how much sleep' I got, but it was interesting to note when playing pool (billiards) the calorie burn. I was in a university study at the time and basically had to watch everything for 8 months, hence comment (earlier), about learning to write my weight on calendar - 10+ years later - that is the one habit - learned at got out of being a 'rabbit' in a 'medical study', and have maintained to a large degree moving forward.
Needed this video today. Just graduated from full time training and was freaking out about the lack of classes available to me as a freelance dancer! First q's answer was 👌🏻
You mentioned being in Flamenco class. I'm curious are you guys studying like actual, costal Spanish, traditional Flamenco dance? Or is it more the Flamenco-inspired ballet "Spanish Dance"? No judgement either way, because I know they're two distinct dance styles, but I'm just curious what it is you do with the company?
Hej bro!! Greetigns from Vienna. What´s happening? First it was, well ok, he is working his ass off. Then it was like, why aren´t there any new videos? And at the end it was WTF?!?! I miss that crazy dude... Hope all is good and that you are just busy and yet, plan to release a huge video update :D
you may not be reading these messages any more; i wanted to comment on your vid 'a day in the life of a ballet dancer' you talked about seasonal depression. i have that. however, years ago my doc suggested i get an all spectrum lamp. i am now on my 3rd such lamp. it helps a lot in the darkest of winter and sometimes if it has been raining for days.. there are lots of different models, floor lamps, desk lamps. you might want to look into this.
Can you clarify what you meant by stating that the Balanchine technique isn't a real academic training program? I'm not sure what you mean. Balanchine was a Russian dancer with the Mariinsky Ballet. While rooted in Russian style, he made some adjustments to the training methods e.g. to strengthen the body in order to dance quicker. Unless trained in the Balanchine technique, other professional dancers have a very difficult time performing his ballets (as he desired them). This is why one must go through SAB to become a NYCB member. So what is it specifically about SAB training isn't real?
Excellent question. If it helps any read Gelsey Kirkland's Dancing on my Grave. She left NYC and went to ABT. One of the reasons was the strain on her body. Go see Gelsey Kirkland interview with Diane Sawyer on 60 minutes here on RUclips.
I note that being in Germany hasn't changed your way of saying "You All" ... which is certainly unique to a certain segment of the USA ... I guess because German was my birth-language, and I re-learned it in University, as well as having studied French, Latin, Biblical Hebrew and Biblical Greek, I tend to be much more careful about separating the syllables, where you continue to slide "youall" together. It is a signature for you of your birth origin. Don't lose it! Be proud of being an American in a German Ballet!
The holiday season is 4 to 5 months out. Is the company going to preform the Nutcracker? How much time is needed to learn the dances especially when youngsters are involved. Also how much time is needed to prepare for other
Hi Tristan, I've been watching your videos recently and it's great that you are willing to share your experiences! So thank you! I was wondering if you have any male ballet dancers that inspire you (especially ones that are active right now) and would you please share these with us? I don't know very well where to start looking for ballet dancers to inspire me in my own dancing (aside from you ofcourse :D ), especially since it's hard to watch live performances these days. Greetings from Antwerp, Belgium!
Hello Tristan, long heard nothing from you. I hope you are doing well and your ballet skills are developing well. Today is a beautiful day and you may be going for a walk in Stuttgart. Please get in touch soon. Greetings from Ludwigsburg
Balanchine style prepares you for Balanchine choreography which is riddled with non traditional steps executed with speed. I admire NYC ballet dancers but the teaching is brutal in order to do Balanchine ballets. Vagonova is also brutal it teaches ballet from the outside in instead of the inside out. Just my opinion.
love the fact that this video literally talks about how good taking time off and avoiding burnout and was posted like a day before simone biles retired from team finals for mental health reasons. 10 yrs ago this conversation would have never happened 👏👏
Where are you? Really missing your upbeat smiling vids! Hope you are OK!!

Me being a Male Ballet Dancer myself (and have been doing it for 9 years now), Tristan has explained some really defined points and he's answered them accurately and honestly!
Tristan? The one question I have is there a difference between partnering women and, on the occasion, partnering or being partnered by another man.
Since he said that maybe other people who dance can answer some of the comments I'll tell you my experience as a female dancer. I'm not a professional though.

Video idea: you can do q&a with a female ballet dancer so we can get the ballet industry from both a male and a female perspective
burnout is a BUMMER
Tristan is amazing.
looking forward to hearing/seeing what your "vacation" plans are!
Have a great vacation! Thanks for sharing your experiences!

This was fun thanks! In regards to your shoulder upper back pain at times, have you ever used a tennis ball on the area pressing against a wall?
