Hi, nice job, I’ve been braintanning for 24 years & did a good job. I’ve braining tanned around 80 bison hides, a tip, before I apply brains to hide, I always heavy smoke first & then apply brains, and I smoke in between each braining & you’ll see that it softens up even more after. The first smoke just coats the outside fibers, but as you start working the hide & smoke it the fibers stay open more & can absorb more brain & smoke, casing more fibers to open. My last one I smoked total 36 hrs, the more you mess with it after it’s done the softer it becomes. It’s what I do on all my hides.
Greetings to you from the OSAGE NATION...we are in the process of beginning to brain tan a HUMONGOUS OSAGE BISON BULL HIDE...HE WAS HARVESTED TWO YEARS BACK AND HAS BEEN IN THE FREEZER UNTIL NOW ..WE HAVE SECURED TO BISON BRAINS AND ARE JUST ABOUT TO THAW HIM OUT AND START THE PROCESS...UR VIDEOS ARE SO GREAT AND HELPFUL IN VISUALIZING WHATS GOING TO ROCK@ROLL ON THIS ONE....ANY POINTERS WOULD REALLY HELP!!!
This is the BEST video on RUclips for this subject! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I just got a cowhide from a friend who is a butcher and I’m following all of your steps. (My first time and man, is it work!) I am to the salt stage now and wondered if you’d share your brains, egg, and baby oil recipe? I have no idea what ratio to use since I’ve never tried this before. My son has already claimed it for his room and I want to get it right!
It really doesn’t matter what brain you use because almost all have lechtins which break down proteins turning the pelt from a protein to a non protein state
So many people dream about making something like this and all I have to say is WOW! You all have been blessed by the Father in Heaven with your parents.
I'm working on a buffalo hide right now. What's that tool you're using to soften the hide that has a little metal bit on the end? Been looking for one but I don't know what to search for. I'm talking about the one you're using at 1:40
Thanks Jack! Will definitely check them out. The wagon was rebuilt from the frame of an old grain wagon we had sitting on our lawn for years. It was re-built by a friend of ours when he was 17 years old.
Thank you for sharing! Respect!!! I do the same with other animals furs but I've never tanned a cow or so. I also have experience without using salt, can you imagine it works for a cow during the winter time as well? Your Washing process was before using the smoke, so I just wondering how it's soft afterwards... Amazing. Regards from Germany Tobias
Turned out really well, and I know there's much more work that went into this then what the camera can capture. Something that surprised me was how you washed the hair side before you smoked it, which should of made your hide go hard ?? How did you get away with that ? Very curious.
Great video! I'll be doing my first Buffalo hide here and I'm very curious on the mixture recipe for your tanning solution, I haven't heard of mixing brains, yolk, and baby oil but looks like it worked amazingly!
Thank you! Best video I found on this so far. Are you gals in Alberta? I’m currently in northern BC and if you want some buffalo hides I can get some for you :-) I’m a ranchhand not a bison and cattle ranch. Currently in the salting stage of my first hide, I sure wish I had gotten myself setup with the right tools before I started, but it’s been a good learning process if anything! ❤
Thats awesome to hear that you're tackling a bison hide! Congrats! We are in Alberta and currently have plenty of bison hides, but will keep you mind! Thanks and all the best :)
Thanks Christine! Yes, it's very rewarding. The recipe came about through lots of research and observation. Brains have been by the Native Americans for centuries in traditional tanning, but you can also use egg yolks, tallow, and/or soap. Basically every animal has enough brains to tan their own hide!
I've seen Brain tanning before and as I heard it was especially helpful to use the brains from the animal type being tanned, but also in the recipe it called for urine, the urine they said could be human, horse or just about any other animal not specifically to the hide... Urine use to be used in the making of black powder too Anyway... Job well done!!!
Uric acid, the main thing that makes urine, urine, is also used in many moisturizers as it is very good for the skin! Probably why some people would use it on a recipe for leather. Make the leather softer and more hydrated.
There's no real rule on how to make the solution, you could use a couple of cow brains cooked in a bit of water and this would work. You can also add eggs, soap etc ..
I love your videos. I had been wanting to try this. Of all the videos I found, yours are by far the best! I just finished smoking mine. It is VERY smoky. How long do you let yours air out before they are tolerable?
Doesn't matter what kind of brains. We use equal parts eggs and brains. Baby oil is optional. For this hide we used about 1 1/2 beef brains. FYI, the right side of the brain is best - lol!
You edited out the first 2 steps. I came on here to watch step by step how to do this. How did you step on it? Did you slide your feet across it or just tip toe? These are the things we need to know. Don't edit out the work and just talk through most of it please.

Thanks a lot Kelly! Sorry for the late reply. Basically equal parts eggs and brains. You don't need the baby oil. All the best!
@@fourseasonsnorth do you need to add water as well
@@fourseasonsnorth what animal did you use for the brains? Did you blend them?
8:15. It doesn't matter what kind of brains - elk, pig, cow, etc. Whatever we can we use.
It really doesn’t matter what brain you use because almost all have lechtins which break down proteins turning the pelt from a protein to a non protein state
Awesome work this video definitely gave me some pointers Thanks 😁👍💪
Oh no! You used the rest of "your brain" 8:27 😂
Fun video just found y'all.

It's called a dry scraper. You can make one or buy one from Traditional Tanners: braintan.com/. They have excellent tools.
@@fourseasonsnorth sorry not the scraper, I was talking about the softening tool? not sure what it's actually called
Oh sure. That's what we call a stretching tool. We made it.
Great work
Esa madera para el ahumado dónde se puede conseguir espectacular piel saludos
Curious to know how much it weighs ?
Video stated "20lbs"
Fantastic work! Would love to hear about the wagon you have there. You should check out E Heart Livestock. You might have some shared interests.

Hi, I am wondering if you are still selling buffalo hides by chance? Thanks!
Pretty awesome!
Lovely work! I'm working on one myself. Trying the traditional plains way. Stakes in the ground and bone tools.
Thank you for the video :)
Good for you and all the best!
Does anyone have a pattern for the Buffalo coat?
Thank you for sharing!

Very good video! Curious if begal, beagle, biegal are all different spelling of same heritage family…?
Thanks. We're not sure...
Good job
What was the amounts of egg yokes, and baby oil to your brain mix?
We will sub to your channel.
Thank you very much!
could we use it to sew a coat?

Who made your tool!? I need one!
We did!
What's the ratio brain: baby oil: egg yolk?
Have a cowhide on a frame right now, going to salt it today!
That's a lot of brain 🧠
I forgot

It's also used to make black powder from scratch
I need more information on the tanning solution as in how to make it and prep it, please relpy
There's no real rule on how to make the solution, you could use a couple of cow brains cooked in a bit of water and this would work. You can also add eggs, soap etc ..
Can I ask why the brains are in the solution? Like what’s the purpose
The brains provide conditioning due to the high level of fat, or lecithin oil.
What’s that tool called? Can I order one or do I need to make one?
It's called a dry scraper. You can make one or buy one from Traditional Tanners: braintan.com/. They have excellent tools.
I'm laying underneath my brain tanned buffalo hide rn

Congratulations! Just until you are good with the smell. Maybe after a day or two.
Shiyo! Do you ever have any issues with the 2x6 frame twisting once the bison was dry? What size did you make your frame? Sgi oginalli🦅🙏
I know this is an older video. But how long did this take you would you guess? Thanks! Want to try this really bad!
The whole process takes about 18+ hours. Have fun!
Heck ya girls.
You still doing this?

Can I ask what brains you used? And how much? Did you just use the brains from the bison?
Doesn't matter what kind of brains. We use equal parts eggs and brains. Baby oil is optional.
For this hide we used about 1 1/2 beef brains. FYI, the right side of the brain is best - lol!
Can you tell me how much you sold it please
At the moment we sell them for $1600 - $2100.
I want one 😮
I love your video. I'm interested in one of your Buffalo hides. I sent you an email
Thanks Doug! We got your email and are in the process of responding :)
What brains did you use?
Generally cow, but sometimes pig. Doesn't really matter, they're all smart :)
We like your shirt. Yeshua ha’ Mashiah our King of Kings. Thank you Sisters💕
