  • I flew out to Georgia to take a brain tanning class from Melony of Mel of The Mountains. I have attempted to tan many hides over the years but could never get it quite right. Instead of continuing to fight through the learning curve I decided to take my own advice and go see someone that was better at it than I! After 3 long hard days or learning I finally figured out what I was doing wrong. Watch this video to hear about some tips and tricks with brain tanning deer hides. No video will substitute a good class but hopefully you will learn something as you join me during my time in Georgia.
    Thanks for watching!

Resident from anoka here! would be interested in that! Being able to keep my own skins after hunting season would make my leathercrafting hobby cheaper.

Could you use beeswax to waterproof the hide after tanning and smoking? If not, are there oils you could use for that? I think I'll save and try tanning my deer hides this hunting season.

Do one where you have the hair on. Not many vids about that.

Deer hides don't hold the hair very well. That's probably why natives didn't do it that way.

@@hereticsaint100 Yeah to be honest I didn't watch the video but assumed it was brain tanning.

@@timothylongmore7325 it is, but there are extra steps if you want the hair to stay on. Steps I doubt were common to natives, but ones that are available today and don't require toxic chemicals.

Hair on hides are less work because they're usually left stiff for wall hangings. I use a mixture of equal parts of alum and borax.

Is there any process shown here. Where’s the solution making. You literally left half the process out and talked

Sorry, not interested. I wasn't looking for a pitch. I was looking for someone to show how to actually do it. You lost me.

Wish you had let her talk more than you considering she knows more. Im not even going to finish the video because in between you interrupting her she told me all i need to know. The first 10 or so minutes of this video are totally useless, hes just rambling in the woods about the stuff this lady does for a living

Not for NOTHING buddy, but you literally have *NOTHING* on for "clothing, string, wearable" items on for this hide... I appreciate your knowledge, but come on my man, if your going to do a video like this, present something that can be shown off from doing this, bc it will help the views..... agreed everyone? 👍 agreed...x
