I once spoke to a very wise homeless person who was living rough on the streets. He seemed to know so much more about the world than I did. He went to a pretty average school in the 80's and I am going to a modern private school. You'd think I'd be much smarter than him... I may know, from school, that plants make oxygen with chlorophyll in leaves out of carbon dioxide, and I may know my 1-12 times tables, but I didn't know how I should act and live and perceive this world. When I met this person, it was a turning point in my life. I learnt that school isn't everything. That work isn't everything. I need to live! This wise, yet poorly educated, homeless person taught me that, and u shall be forever grateful to this man.

My 11 yr old son was having a very hard time in due to pdd autism that we couldnt get diagnosed until he was 21! And we tried hard, going to as many experts as we could find. I am actually from a Third World Country and our schools here are expensive and bad. In English class I learnt almost nothing, just memorising words I will never use or know, but on social media I learnt English without the help of a teacher. I probably forgot more than I learned in Class. The only reason I’m still going to school is to get a diploma and a job, but if I could I would leave. Mental issues are also misunderstood, and I have to hide my emotions to not get yelled at for frowning. They say, “Stop being sad” and hit me if I don’t hide my emotions. The only redeeming feature of school is friends which are the reason i’m still going on. I hope one day my descendants don’t have to suffer through this.

I don't know what type of learner I am because I was taught to write down notes, memorize, take the test, then forget everything... the same routine throughout my whole life, no change, I never learned different ways, never figured out what's best for me, because schools never cared for what's best for me, always teaching everyone the same exact thing even though everyone learns differently, and no one's brain is the same

The reason you don't remember anything is because you constantly need to re-read what you learned in order to memorize it completely (store the information in long term memory). Likes and dislikes certanly do make a difference, big one, in fact.

I suffer from insomnia, I can't sleep more than 5hours. This made me ''slow'', so I failed all my tests. My parents were worried and I had to visit a Phsicologist almost every day. My classmates found out about it, so I had no friends at all. That made me feel stupid and soon I got depressed. Now i'm okay, but my depression was pretty serious. Hard to think that tests could have such an impact on us

I learned English from RUclips, Unturned ( A game based on community, where I made tons of friends who helped me learn English ) and from one of my friends who didn't go to school. That didn't mean he didn't know English or math or science or many other things. His dad taught him the most valuable lesson and not things that will be forgotten in 1 week.

It’s one of my favourite classes, along with all the ones that the teachers just don’t have any control over the class (it’s fun sitting at the back and watching the drama unfold at the front.) Anyway, I wish that tech teacher was a permanent one. We swap tech classes every term. (After the holidays I’m going with the cooking tech teacher. That should be a barrel of laughs.) Dear Prince Ea, I am 18 years old and just graduated high school. All my life I have been asked the same question: What do you want to be when you are older? What do you want to do with the rest of your life? And I answered most of the time: I don't know. But the past years this question wasn't just asked out of interest, and it wasn't asked by others. It was me. And I couldn't live with just an "I don't know". I needed a real answer. And after 17 years I anwsered. I want to be a teacher in elementery school. Yup, that's it. Teaching children. No. That's not it. I can't be a teacher the rest of my life. I mean, how long do I still have? I don't want to be 60 years and still teaching children how to write. I don't want to die knowing nothing of this big world we're living in. I don't want to regret my life. I am fully aware of how small I am in this big world. I just don't want to be a part of it. Not like this. I don't want to learn how to be someone. I want to BE someone. No, I want to be myself. Why do we have to make money to survive? I don't want to have a job. I don't like the life I am supposed to live. But I also feel like I don't want to dissapoint the people around me. I can feel their expectations pressing on me. How do you live? There's two ways you will die in this world that I find personally commonly happens you die with friends and family around you having a wonderful life but you contributed nothing major to societies for example inventing something new like efficient energy or you actually do invent something changing the world but you die alone with only everyone mourning you after you're dead that's not to say you can't invent something and have a wonderful life it's rare but possible not probable since inventing takes away lots of your time and energy that could've gone into making friends

Theres a reason why you dont get to choose a major until late high school or university, because your brain is still developing thats the easiest solution to the problem. Plus if you cant figure out a way to learn from a book and all the material on the internet, its more of a you problem not the schools problem. Figure out a way to learn or accept the fact that youre disabled and simply have difficulties learning things.
I want to thank you SO much. I know it sounds over board, but you saved me. You saved me from continuing to follow a path people have made for me, but to make my own way in life. I was having a hard time on homework, because it was too much for me to handle. But you saved me from the pain and how upset i was getting. So I'm just entering year 12 (I'm British so I don't know the American equivalent) and things couldn't be more different. After the GCSE tests at the end of last year I was warned things would get harder. I figure "they said the same about GCSE and it weren't so bad". Holy shit I was wrong! All of a sudden, independent study, tons of homework, reading around the topic, citing sources from material you are expected to read outside of class. As if this transition wasn't enough, I'm expected to know what I want for a career. I'm pressured into looking for universities, part time jobs, internships. All I can think is; what the hell happened? Can someone help? This transition is seriously difficult to cope with.

School teaches you to educate yourself. You wouldnt have been able to read anything if it wasnt for your parents or school for teaching you how to do it. Someone who only focuses on school obviously misses up on a lot. Someone who only focuses on the internet also obviously misses up on a lot. Youre also taught critical thinking in school which again helps you educate yourself.
In my school, our teachers are required to give us a paper that helps them understand if we are a visual learner, auditory learner, etc. Then each class we split up into the group that we fit into and do different things based on what group we are in. More schools should encourage kids to learn the way they want to. Not have a teacher tell them what to think and how to learn.

I am right now in 9th grade, 15 years old, learning the exact same shit I learnt in 6th grade, but on a slightly elevated level. It's just as easy for me as it has always been, just as unnecessary too. Since 6th grade, nothing learnt in school has been useful, and I have heard of countless adults telling me that they had close to no use for the stuff they learnt in school. They had more use of the stuff they learnt between the age of 18-20 than 9-18. A few of the completely unnecessary things we learn today include sewing, geography(we have GPS, no one needs a map), basic math(we have calculators in our phones) and history. Basically, school is making us waste at least 6 years, doing things which will not help us out a bit in the future, thanks!

I once spoke to a very wise homeless person who was living rough on the streets. He seemed to know so much more about the world than I did. He went to a pretty average school in the 80's and I am going to a modern private school. You'd think I'd be much smarter than him... I may know, from school, that plants make oxygen with chlorophyll in leaves out of carbon dioxide, and I may know my 1-12 times tables, but I didn't know how I should act and live and perceive this world. When I met this person, it was a turning point in my life. I learnt that school isn't everything. That work isn't everything. I need to live! This wise, yet poorly educated, homeless person taught me that, and u shall be forever grateful to this man.

I am actually from a Third World Country and our schools here are expensive and bad. In English class I learnt almost nothing, just memorising words I will never use or know, but on social media I learnt English without the help of a teacher. I probably forgot more than I learned in Class. The only reason I’m still going to school is to get a diploma and a job, but if I could I would leave. Mental issues are also misunderstood, and I have to hide my emotions to not get yelled at for frowning. They say, “Stop being sad” and hit me if I don’t hide my emotions. The only redeeming feature of school is friends which are the reason i’m still going on. I hope one day my descendants don’t have to suffer through this.

This is idiotic and simply ignorant. Why you dont learn things u studied for to a test it is due to your poor method. U study all night before the test and it is only in your work memory. You need to read the things with THOUGHT, several times over many days, thats how you learn.
It is not about the school system it is simply because you dont care enough to remember yourself. It is all about how you process the knowledge.
The reason you don't remember anything is because you constantly need to re-read what you learned in order to memorize it completely (store the information in long term memory). Likes and dislikes certanly do make a difference, big one, in fact.

Teachers think we students have infinite time to do anything and that's why they give us homework, they think only they are busy and have work, they call us slow, call us stupid and call us lazy for not doing the homework that they give us, and when we stand up to them they don't solve their problems by teaching us, they send us to the principal(or a parent in my case) and they're done, parents expect too much most of the time and teachers expect perfection, see there are these few students in my class who are tolerated get good grades and get praised, but they don't work hard, there are the students who work hard but get called slow and stupid and they can't do anything and have bad grades but, they work hard
Because we all have to work together and make that change!
Because no one really cares about us the young students they just like money they don't care bou't any of us we gotta make some changes by ourself. We have this powerfull tool called internet so use it wisely and for the good.rather than just surfing on the internet for entertainment search something positive, learnable , interesting things which make your brain grow. So I'm just entering year 12 (I'm British so I don't know the American equivalent) and things couldn't be more different. After the GCSE tests at the end of last year I was warned things would get harder. I figure "they said the same about GCSE and it weren't so bad".
Holy shit I was wrong! All of a sudden, independent study, tons of homework, reading around the topic, citing sources from material you are expected to read outside of class. As if this transition wasn't enough, I'm expected to know what I want for a career. I'm pressured into looking for universities, part time jobs, internships.

School teaches you to educate yourself. You wouldnt have been able to read anything if it wasnt for your parents or school for teaching you how to do it. Someone who only focuses on school obviously misses up on a lot. Someone who only focuses on the internet also obviously misses up on a lot.
Youre also taught critical thinking in school which again helps you educate yourself.
The power of the internet is not to be underestimated.

In my school, our teachers are required to give us a paper that helps them understand if we are a visual learner, auditory learner, etc. Then each class we split up into the group that we fit into and do different things based on what group we are in. More schools should encourage kids to learn the way they want to. Not have a teacher tell them what to think and how to learn.

I wish the school system worked like this: get online school and have social activities to still be social. You then spend more time with ur family and other people instead of sitting on a chair the whole day. You can make ur dreams come true because u are not stuck at school everyday. I am right now in 9th grade, 15 years old, learning the exact same shit I learnt in 6th grade, but on a slightly elevated level. It's just as easy for me as it has always been, just as unnecessary too. Since 6th grade, nothing learnt in school has been useful, and I have heard of countless adults telling me that they had close to no use for the stuff they learnt in school. They had more use of the stuff they learnt between the age of 18-20 than 9-18. A few of the completely unnecessary things we learn today include sewing, geography(we have GPS, no one needs a map), basic math(we have calculators in our phones) and history. Basically, school is making us waste at least 6 years, doing things which will not help us out a bit in the future, thanks!
