      The media. Everything from movies to TV and advertising. Girls are supposed to be beautiful, wear make up, and appeal to men where men are supposed to be strong and muscular.
      People who advertise the make up and clothes we buy are usually digitally altered to be the most appealing wearing certain clothes so we buy them.
      Movies sometimes have a "damsel in distress". Usually hero movies, the movie often finds their true love near the middle of the movie and the romanced couple play their counter parts throughout until the end. e.x.: Hero trains, finds a damsel in distress, she becomes a major part of the plot, and in the ending after the hero succeeds their destiny, they fall in love or get married and live the rest of their lives. Other plots that are less romantic usually involve the female role to be a sidekick to the main character. In TV, women are rarely portrayed without make up or fashionable clothes.

    both the kindergarteners and third graders were answering based on their home-life situations, friend groups, and self identity at the time, having them point at a doll is a difficult way to justify their thoughts beliefs on gender roles at their age. Maybe try the experiment again by asking other or more questions starting with, "Could a boy...?" or, "Could a girl...?"

      @MariaThePotterNut 7 лет назад +8

      Also, by using Barbie and Ken, they're using not just generic basic dolls, but ones that have character and known likes and dislikes. It's well known that Barbie loves shopping, and likes to cook, and Ken is very often shown as being athletic and playing sports. The question about hair length was worded a bit odd, maybe "can girls have short hair" would be better. As well as the dress question, instead of do boys, can boys wear dresses would have likely gotten better results. They may not know any boys that wear dresses, so they don't know if they do or not, but that doesn't mean they can't wear them.

      It also pisses me off when they do boys vs girls or girls in one line boys in the other, etc.
      It really hurt confused me. I was and still am always forced into the girl roll, and it's not good for those struggling with gender identity. Besides this, I also feel like it's little things like this that keep the world from changing into accepting non conforming genders and things like that.
      I know someone is gonna come here and tell me that the world isn't ready for this or it doesn't matter, but to me
      Saying things line he/her or she/him is annoying. They exists for a reason, and it should be used in that way.
      Gender reveal parties are horrible. I'd have no problem with it if it was SEX reveal and it didn't enforce stereotypes, but no.
      Sorting kids, or people in general, into the boy group or the girl group is horrible.
      Stop saying "This goes for boys and girls," or, "Girls and boys/ Ladies and gentlemen." This continues to enforce the idea that there are only two genders. There are other ways fo get a group if peoples attention, like the word everyone. Or, in some cases you don't have to say that at all. Instead of someone at a show saying ladies and gentlemen, they can just say welcome.
      Again, I know most people aren't going to understand this and will feel like I'm being too pushy and annoying, that I'm getting annoyed by things like this.
      Some people will think that it just doesn't matter.
      But to me, little things like this is NORMALIZING the multiple genders.
      Which is what should already be done.
      Sorry for the rant.
      I just wish the world would change.

    • @sugartea8929
      @sugartea8929 7 лет назад +14

      Julia Ratliff Even if they changed the dolls out the children would more than likely still choose the answers as in the videos. The children are influenced more by their parents,if they had only 1 parent the children would most likely choose the same doll for each question. Also at a young age they are prone to see females behaving a certain way and males behaving a certain way hence why the female roles were on barbie and males onto ken. If they asked at a date where the children were teenagers/older the children would say both more as they would know women and men both can do the same things.

      Sam I think you should teach a boy how to sew because if he ever needs to do a quick fix it job on the hem of his suit jacket or do a quick pin in the back of his pants he won't be lost paying money for a quick fix or asking mommy to do everything. My brother knows how to alternate his suits himself if they are too long or whatever it maybe.Also teaching your son to cook ,wash his clothes and iron them is vital. Unless you want him always ordering take out or having dirty and wrinkled clothes.They both need to learn to fend for themselves .Lastly if your daughter wants to work let her work. Yes it says husbands should be the "main" breadwinners but that doesn't mean she can't get a part time to have her own money to get the things she wants or to treat herself . Shoot in this economy all habds on deck .Both should cook,clean,and share the responsibilities of rearing the Children . just my thoughts as I'm going through RUclips. I was never one for dresses I couldn't wait to throw it off And put on comfy clothes.

      Elani Scott but women can have period pains equal to the pain of giving birth (my mother said she'd rather have cramps as opposed to labor contractions) and don't complain about it but if you kick a guy below the belt its "worse than labor". Personally both sexes are strong, but strong is about more than lifting things, its physical and mental and emotional. Guys are faced with expectations like "your a boy you dont cry". But both have to be equally as strong. Like a woman giving birth when every midwife would say "oh and by the way, you're gonna die" but some lived, that's strong.

    Why couldn't you just ask the kids what they think of men and women, not dolls? These dolls are characters that have a lot of things built up around them. Their marketing heavily relies of gender roles and stereotypes, so what a child thinks about the dolls isn't going to necessarily be an accurate way to gauge what they think gender roles are.

    • @aiethought6677
      @aiethought6677 7 лет назад +10

      Totally. For example, when they asked which doll is stronger my thoughts were "well, I'd like to say Barbie could be as strong, but because the doll itself has much thinner arms, and much thinner everywhere that should have muscle, there's anatomically no way for that particular doll to be stronger"

    Stereotypes are based on facts... Yes, some women are stronger, yes some men like to go shopping, yes some men wear dresses but the majority is not like this. Also, most boys and girls in kindergarten see girls with long hair (who are also in kindergarten) and don’t see many with short unless some close relative or friend or person they see a lot has short hair. Of course as they live longer, they’ll see more, they’ll understand better, they’ll learn.

    I think it would've been a better experiment if you had Kindergarten, Third grade and sixth/seventh grade. Tween and Teens have different opinions and if anyone watches the show, Brain Games there was one episode where the host asked a group of teens if they would swim in shark infested water. The teens didn't reply with No immediately like the younger group and adult group. They thought about the question and didn't give a definite answer. I think you would have more variety in your answers.

    This experiment didn't use the best examples because barbie and ken are known characters that have defined personalities. I definitely know some women who deadlift and squat heavier than some men. Yes, biology makes the vast majority of men physically stronger than the vast majority of women; what does it matter unless you're a lumberjack or something?

    • @bigboomer1013
      @bigboomer1013 7 лет назад +32

      Lola Cate lol exactly. unless a woman works out to the extreme and is a body builder and is ripped. men naturally are stronger. they get stronger and form stronger mucles when they go through puberty. women, not so much or maybe not at all

    • @favianmojica1914
      @favianmojica1914 7 лет назад +9

      Yes for example my mother birthed me right? So she has been alive longer than me and she works out and works and has pretty much been conditioned to lift heavy right? And when I was 13 I remember asking her for help lifting heavy stuff and all this other shit but then I hit puberty and I never worked out ran nor lifted to be stronger yet once I hit puberty I was significantly stronger than her and now she was the one asking me for help and shit, so yes! Males are naturally significantly stronger than females. There is no denying and unless a female dedicates her life to lift and be a power lifter she won't be as strong as men and even those women are easily matched by men who just started working out and lifting.

    This is stupid. Women can do the same thing as men. Everyone should be treated the same whether someone is gay/lesbian or straight or bi, or whether someone is black, white or in between. It doesn't matter. Women are just as important as men. Just to clarify I am not saying Women are better/more important then men. I just believe in equality and that if u think that's wrong to think then that's ur opinion and its ur choice to make. I'm just saying that Everyone Matters!

    Notice that the guys answered less stereotypically than the girls. I honestly didn't expect that, but at least we can say that their parents did a good job raising their boys not to be "go make me a sandwich" boys. I'd be proud if I were their parents. Even though it's not that big a deal, it's progress. Our generation's youth aren't seeing much more than the stereotypes though so we can't blame the ones who went with the obvious gender role answers.

      Kenya Jewelz I feel like if they interviewed, say, 7th graders, their answers would be a lot less stereotypical, because they've had time to learn and understand these things. For example, those kids probably don't know about LGBT, and would probably be really confused if they found out, but older kids would know about it and would have already formed an opinion, and it would hopefully be positive.

    In my opinion, I think the choices are based off of the child's family. Being influenced by their parent's actions and chores that they do, I think they interpreted that by the dolls.
    Another one is that Barbie and Ken are iconic dolls, so the younger kids choose by Barbie and Ken's traits

I dont think being homosexual is wrong but it feels bad when people keep throwing it in my face when it's not true. I don't think a penis or vagina matters as long as the person can be happy being the way they want. :)

    we did one of these when I was in year six. my teacher put out a Barbie, and a ken doll, she then said "which one is stronger? the man, or the woman?" so I said "well, it depends what physical state they're in, I'm not gonna stereotype them. And who's to say that they aren't transgender?"
    then my teacher turned to the TA and said "this experiment is useless"

    I feel like gender roles aren't bad if the woman makes this decision. If the woman is forced into gender roles than that's fucked to up. As a little girl I was told to dress in pink and wear bows by the other little girls. I didn't and they said" why not". I didn't care.That dosen't make it bad. Some peoples opinions see different and sometimes women come out stronger and sometimes boys come out stronger. If you are gay or lesbian that dosen't mean someone should shit on you for it. People are born different. When a women decides to shop,she shops if a man wants to shop he shops. Sometimes there are stay at home dads. These kids are taught there parents opinions, most taught that gender roles are good. That may be their reason for the answer. But that isn't bad.
