    I know this video was essentially all equipment driven, one major note is when you see a car at an intersection (you have right away, car has stop sign/right on red) present yourself side to side. Odds are your single headlight is going to blend in with a car way back behind you. If that light starts zigzagging they're not going to pull out in front of you.
    I started riding in December and well over half of my 1400 miles have been at night due to how late I get off work, so I'm no expert but personally I think that's great advice that can easily get overlooked

    • @MrEiniweini
      @MrEiniweini 2 года назад +2

      I ride home at midnight every day. You are correct. Any time a vehicle is indicating turning across your path of travel, begin to swerve. A street light is stuck in place so a light moving side to side will draw attention. Stay safe on the road brother.

    • @ryandude2448
      @ryandude2448 2 года назад

      @@MrEiniweini I typically get off work between 11pm and 3am. Although my path back home is usually just me and a couple other cars, on my days off sometimes I go to my dad's house which has tons of early night traffic on my way back home from there. Even in broad daylight it's not a bad practice. Safety is always #1 priority, for if that fails, there are no other priorities

    I choose to not ride in the dark but during winter months, I sometimes have no choice to ride in the dark. A slightly different take on tinted visors: let me preface this by stating I have *really* good night vision and some over sensitivity to bright lights, but I find a mirrored visor works well for me at night. It cuts headlight glare while still allowing enough light through that I can easily see even where there are no street lights. I'm talking a very light tint, light enough that I still want the drop down sun visor or sunglasses during the day.

    As a cyclist that had ridden at night several times, I'd recommend getting some of those neon strips that are attached by velcro which you strap on to your legs and arms when cycling. They're compact and can be easily taken off when not needed, plus you can avoid the emergency services worker look. I've also seen guys who ride with AA battery-powered fairy lights on their bodies, that is almost fail proof but absolutely comical to see.

    Hi vis is most effective during the day, not at night. The term "fluorescent" means it absorbs UV light and re-emits it in the visible spectrum. This is why they appear so bright in sunlight, not just because of the color. Without the UV light from the sun, it's just yellow. Retro-reflective surfaces are probably more effective at night.

    I actually prefer riding late at night. The roads are mostly deserted near where I live, and you can see headlights from much further away in the dark, which gives both cars and bikes a more advanced warning of one another. Specifically, if someone is coming up behind me, it's much easier to notice them out of the corner of my eye in the mirror. Really the only thing I worry about is hitting a deer.

    the eye-patch was actually used so they could walk bellow deck and flip the patch over from their covered to uncovered eye so they can preserve their night-vision. Bellow deck was usually dimly lit with oil lamps or candles.

    I bicycle commuted for 10 years so I have no shame in wearing a reflective vest. Reflective stuff is the most visible thing you can get. I bought reflective tape that matches my bike, it's barely visible in the daylight but pops a lot at night.

    Most of my riding is at night due to my work schedule. I find that in busy areas, it helps to stay oriented closer to the center of the road (without riding the line, obviously) and to honk the horn a few times when approaching any kind of intersection. This makes you more noticeable and gives you a little extra room to evade drivers who turn into the street without looking.

    The fun begins when you are riding in the afternoon with your prescription glasses which are also darkened and you prolong your trip so when you go back home you have to choose between brightness or sharpness of your vision 😅

    I don’t know about Texas but in Indiana there is an insane amount of bugs out at night time. I bet it’s 15 to 20 bugs you’ll hit at night per 1 bug you’d hit day riding. All the more reason to not be rolling around at night with your tinted visor open. The sunglasses is my fav tip!

    reflective stickers helps as well esp on the back of the helmet and on the side of the bike as well. you can get it in many colors so even matching the color of the bike shouldn't be to hard not to mention if you're able to find it the clear reflective vinyl works wonders as well and really won't be seen until night time for non added lighting ideas.

    You don’t use rods to see at night when you’re driving with a headlight on. You’re still primarily using day color vision (cones) because of the white light of the headlight. It has to be very dark in order for you to switch primarily to cones.

    I hear you with the smoked visors. I wear prescription glasses and can’t wear contacts so sunglasses are out for me. My go to is photochromatic lenses which darken in the sun. Yeah not as dark and cool as a smoke lense but I don’t have to worry about changing lenses out. Another reason I stick with shoei.

    For helmets, there's also the Dual Visor ones (e.g.: AGV K3SV) that can eliminate the use of sunglasses if that's your thing. You can retain your clear visor w/ Pinlock insert on while having the smoked one on the secondary visor.

    Thank you! I'm super sensitive to bright lights at night. People rolling around with the high beam projector lights at night blind me pretty bad and it seems like the last several years in my area everybody likes to drive with their high beams on (cars and bikes alike).

      Despite the fact that it is actually a moving violation in many jurisdictions (which I wish to hell the cops would actually crack down on), a LOT of idiots seem to drive/ride with their brights on in urban areas. (I guess the lights need to be bright when the drivers are decidedly NOT...) Can't do much about it on the bike, but if I'm driving my truck I'll usually give them one warning flash with my own high beams... and if they don't drop theirs, I treat them to a flash from my off-roads. Inside a hundred yards, at night, that's pretty much like looking straight into the sun. I usually watch them in my rearview pulling over to try to let their eyes readjust and wait for the floaty bits to go away! I'm guessing it kinda gets the message across, loud and clear. I know... vindictive and a little bit dangerous... but at my age, I've just plain run out of patience with stupid, rude, incompetent drivers who should never have been given a license in the first place.

    one thing you can also do at night is set your read break to blink when you are stopping. also they came out with these shoes that have lights on them so when you stop then turn red. even blinker lights too. yes they are exspwnsive but they are worth it. i will be investing in those

    the other option for night riding is to basically reverse what spite said; use a tinted visor and carry around a pair of non-tinted safety glasses for when it gets dark. you get the cool aesthetic of a tinted visor during the day, and you still get protection from flying debris at night with the visor flipped up

    Modular helmets like the neotec 2 from Shoei are great with pop down sun visors. Also, I have exactly 91,000 miles on my night rider with six headlights and over 32 tail / running lights, my tips for night rides are DEER WHISTLES, yes they work, I have 16 of them and they work on most dogs cats rodents and moose and Linx and weasels - also more lights the better - always bring rain gear so it doubles as more layers when cold - stand up frequently to keep your legs fresh and use your cruise control to keep your hands fresh - also add more travel to your suspension to absorb the potholes and shit that you may not see, also make sure to counter lean rather than speed lean so that you can react to critters and deer or gravel you may haven’t seen in time……also don’t ride fast in the fog, the deer love fog……also stay hydrated…..it makes you fatigue less and prevents you from sleeping
