  • In this video essay, I wanted to do a deep dive into Fishing in Video Gaming. I made this to discuss the evolution of fishing mini games in Hades, Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, Breath of Fire 3, etc. After learning how to fish in Hades, I thought it reminded me of some much fishing in video games in general. Which led me to ask… Why is Fishing in every Video Game? Especially when there are so many bad video game fishing sections. Well let’s find out together! And the history of fishing in video games is actually a lot more interesting than I first realized. So come on this adventure with me! This will be your Fishing Guide to Fishing in Video games.

    I love fishing in mmos. You just chill with friends or strangers. I think one of the best fishing systems was in dragon quest 10 where it works like an extension of the combat system. Also fishing gave you fishing coins that you could trade for items and such. I think things like this besides just fighting really add the sense of a living world.

    Never thought of fishing being similar to lootboxes but it makes sense! And yeah i am pretty tired of these animal crossing style fishing games.
    My favorite fishing minigame is the one from Okami, where you can draw the line to the specific fish you want, the chance shaved away slightly by being able to see size. Then you have to pull the line in the opposite direction the fish is swimming in, staying in a green area or you lose stamina. The green gets smaller and the controls touchier the larger the fish. Press a button to breach the fish, hit them with an attack, and boom, fish time. I thought it was a pretty good involvement, but not so complicated i needed to dedicate resources away from other aspects of the game. The most you have to do is buy like 2 specialty rods.

    • @filmotter
      @filmotter  3 года назад +2

      Wait, I had no idea Okami had a fishing mini-game! This may make me finally pick it up. I somehow totally missed it when it came out. And it totally looks like something I would be into. Do you happen to know if it's on any current-gen consoles?

    • @Shadowpool71
      @Shadowpool71 3 года назад +1

      @@filmotter Oh yeah it does! You actually HAVE to fish about 3 or 4 times in order to progress. Once to unlock a power, and twice to unlock an area, and a few other times to get optional powers. If you've never played it you totally should. Its on switch, pc, and ps4 (not sure abt 5) for like 20$ or so and frequently goes on sale. I've played it like 6 times and my fav way to play is the wii, but i do appreciate the new hd versions too.
      The fishing minigame doesnt actually open-open up until i think a few hours into the game though... you have to get to agata forest and help a kid catch a fish that ate a key, then again when it eats his dog. You cant really fish "at will" until almost a third through i think when you hit ryoshima coast after you heal a city and help a guy catch a sword.
      Hope this helps!

      Oh my gosh, thank you! I may give it a shot on the Switch soon! I feel like the joycons will probably be useful for the paintbrush mechanics. 🥰
      I'm super excited. Do you know if they ever made any sequels or anything?

    • @Shadowpool71
      @Shadowpool71 3 года назад

      @@filmotter I havent played on the switch! I wonder if you can use your finger on the screen in mobile mode... that would be cool! Lmk how it turns out! Its not a particularly hard game, but very fun and satisfying to play. The dialogue is p cheesy and some parts def suffer in the modern day (i really cringe at a lot of Issun's creepy actions towards women now that im not a kid and paying attention) but the story really is excellent, and the characters have a lot of charm to them. The combat is super satisfying too. They rate you kinda like Devil May Cry after combat, via time/damage taken/damage dealt. You can easily just button mash, but its MUCH more fun after you unlock more brush skills and you can really find stylish ways to put the hurt on demons by the end.
      And yes they did, they made Okamiden for the DS, which takes place directly after Okami by about 10 years i think and follows Ammy's son who is a wolf puppy. Its kind of split on terms of people liking or disliking it, but i liked it well enough! It captured the spirit of the og game well, and getting to see the kids of the characters from the first game was sweet and made me happy to see how good they were with their kids. The story was pretty good imo, but the combat and weapon system suffered a bit, mostly bc okami didnt have much of a grind system unless you wanted demon fangs or money; you got your weapons by beating bosses or cleansing areas of the map so it felt more earned than just beating x amount of demons like in okamiden to level up the 3 weapons you get.
      Also, theres no fishing minigame as far as i can remember in the sequel which automatically makes it worse.
      Sorry for the long winded explanation, but i hope you enjoy! Lmk how you like it! Thanks for giving me a chance to talk about my favorite game as well :) its the game that made me fall in love with gaming as a story experience, and the Oni Island arc is still something i can point at years later and say that it can highlight so well what can drive a player and motivate them.

    I've never fished in real life. But I did fish in FFXI heavily. To the point I earned the Ebisu rod... solo version of getting a relic weapon. I absolutely loved the journey. I was in a linkshell and could hop on Teamspeak and listen to them doing their group quests (which I joined in also at times) but other times I'd have a pack of beers and just leisurely fish a spot out for a couple of hours. Levelling took aaaaages and there was a stamina system that meant you could only fish for a couple of hours or so a day. It could take an hour or so to prepare getting buying bait or crafting it at higher levels. To be self suffieicent you had to level cooking and woodworking to be able to do this which took ages as well. Other than a dedicated fishing game I'd never again consider a mini game in any other title. Nothing would compare.

    I don't know if fishing is a particularly modern, 2021 phenomenon in gaming. Like in 1998, you had Ocarina of Time, Suikoden 2, Pokemon Red and Blue, and Sonic Adventure, all of which had fishing mini games. Probably equal to the sum total of notable games in 2021 which had fishing mini games. I don't think devs are "obsessed" with fishing nor is fishing in "every video game" as the title suggests. It's just a popular hobby all over the world, makes sense that it would make its way into video games in some limited capacity.
    Point being, you don't need to force a narrative man, you don't need to exaggerate the significance of your subject matter. Just opening with "Hey, fishing in video games is neat let's talk about it." is good enough.

    • @filmotter

    I think stardew valleys fishing is so fun because not only do you have to wait for that intermittent lucky catch, you have to have the skill to reel it in. You take all the adrenaline rush of getting a rare drop and then you have the chance to lose it. If you're into this kind of gameplay (which i know a lot of people aren't sadly), reeling in something like the legend is crazy intense. For a fishing minigame, this is unusual XD

    Stardew Valley's fishing game irks me though. The progression curve is no fun to me. But a lot of games suffer from such a thing. One game i played - that i sadly cannot remember the name of - had an interesting approach. The fishing itself was pretty basic, but the fish you caught could be uaed in this little minigame where you bred and raced fish. It was like a super small scale virtual pet. Very minimal features. You couldn't even raise their stats, it was dependent on the rarity of the 2 fish you bred. Still, it was cute and made me actually want to do the fishing.

    I think the video game I have done the most fishing in has to be World of Warcraft online, where the fishing is quite sophisticated in terms of gameplay and reward system. There is a fishing skill level to build up, there are different fish to catch in different regions and different times (gotta catch em' all!), cooking recipes for different fish, quest missions to catch particular fish, and a wide variety of loot and rare-items to catch as well, all of which feeds that psychological addiction-reward cycle.
