  • Hey everyone...if you've been following my channel for a while now you'll know that one of my favorite summer traditions is to add aquarium fish to my pond, its sort of a vacation for them. This season I added 4 Brsitle nose pleco's, 1 Royal pleco, 1 Tropheus Duboisi cichlid and 1 Tinfoil barb....and I can't catch them!

    Try putting a vase in instead of the rocks.
    The plecos should hide inside and then you can pick up the whole thing with them in it.

      DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS how do you mean to much for you

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  7 лет назад +20

      The electric bill...okay so the pond is +/- 1000 gallons...I would need 5-6 heaters (the heaters sold for ponds are just de icers...so they only heat the pond enough to keep it from freezing which is 33 Degree's F)...They would most likely run endlessly if their fighting temps between 25F to -10F...and the would probably add up to a extra $50 a month....and that's on top of the expenses for my fishroom!

    it took me a week to catch my common pleco out of my pond. it is best to try at night as the plecos will be active and the sun wont create glare on the water so you can see it better. it was easier for me though because my pond is smaller and has less hiding places then yours. good look though!! if only they knew you were trying to save them from freezing. im sure it would be a lot easier then lol

    I put some excess platy fry in my pond during summer. Thought I got them all out but as soon as I added some goldfish 2 came out of hiding and started swimming with the goldfish. They are really hard to catch in a pond and really good at hiding from your line of sight :/

  • @Hallands.
    @Hallands. 7 лет назад +2

    Pleicos are very hard to catch. Perhaps use a five liter vinegar bottle trap and place a small heater inside along with some algae pellets. Don't you think they'll seek it out when the temperature starts to drop. Drill perhaps like twenty 2mm holes for circulation, that they not suffocate...

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  7 лет назад

      I never thought of that, I'm sure they are probably looking for warmer temps when it drops to the 60's....I'll give it a shot! Thanks for the suggestion

      DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS You are of course most welcome, let's just hope it works and please tell us. I've been busy making trickle filters for all my aquariums, because the first one was such a huge improvement: In less than a week the algae tufts on my plants (not a big problem, but annoying) vanished. The reproductive rate of my shrimp went way up and the growth of my fry increased markedly. The water is almost eerily clear, too. It was slightly brown from large roots, but tricking seems to break down tannins as well...
      I have a sneaky suspicion the huge benefits of trickle filters is played down somewhat by professionals in the trade...
      I notice all commercial breeders use them and isn't it a little strange, too, that no plug and play aquariums come with trickle filters, only those high output pumps with ineffective sponge filters? My new toolbox trickle filter only use a 3 watt pump, yet cleans much, much better than the 35 watt came with the tank.

    I used to live in a foot hills town in Nevada that gets cold in the winter. One guy there had a huge, natural pond he kept plecos in. He brought one to me because I expressed interest in one. It was a good 2 feet long, my tank was 20 gallon so of course he took his pleco back home. My point is that apparently they can take cold weather.

      I was talking to my husband about it after I commented. I gets snow storms some winters in Pahrump Nv. His pond was fed by a natural spring and it very well could have been a warm spring. There are many in that area. So yes Darius do what you feel is best for your plecos.

    I’ve found that placing slices of cucumbers or zucchini in a net or container works great! Just use something to weigh the veggies down in the net, come back an hour later, and lift the net out of the water! They are a sucker for veggies and it makes the process much less stressful!

    add a pond heater and problem solved. I keep 3 to 4 500 watt heaters in my pond during winter. It works great and fish stay happy. The coldest I let water get in winter is high 60’s/ low 70’s through winter. My tropical fish do fine in it at that but no lower then that will I let it go. depends on the fish though.

    so why exactly is it a bad idea to keep plecos with koi? because you can't catch them? that's not exactly a valid reason. not everyone keeps fish in ponds like that, some of us keep them in IBC totes which are a piece of cake to drain and don't have a zillion hiding places so really I don't see the big deal. Are there any valid reasons why plecos would not get along with small goldfish and baby koi.
    give me a real reason not a lame one.

    The bristlenose pleco is one awesome fish!!! I love em... they are extremely intelligent for a fish, and fast... i have some and they are awesome... they love the tail whip... they use it to dart through the water, position themselves (which makes me chuckle every time), and bat other fish away ftom thier alge pellets... they also charge head first at em a lot too... love them fish, but you ain't going to catch them without a fight...

    I set mine up where I can get between the morning sun and the pond. No glare. Or try some polarized sunglasses maybe. Or a submersible light. You could also try putting a vessel in the tank with some wafers in it. Less work, more patience.

    Unless you live in the tropics it's a bad idea to put five in. We put four in my school's koi pond. We wound up having to drain the pond to get them back. The next year we only did one so we weren't having to drain everything.

    • @dwsdarius

    Drain out 1/2 of water to make catching easier. Late summer/early fall is a dry time of the year anyway, so water your plants with nutrient-rich water. Win-win!!

    I'd let fall leaves grass muck etc build up n just add a single submersible heater in deepest part on or in cinder block/hollow log, and my butterfly plecos etc bred in my pond in WI, before took out because as get big they get territorial and aggressively chase and actually stab other fish besides chinchids with side fins (lost koi pacu piranha etc that way, but they clean chinchids spawning wounds up great).

    I had to move house in January and it was a 20+ hr drive with overnight stay at motel. I decided that the only fish I would take with me were my bristlenose and sailfin Pleco. They were in a small container of water in the back of a van with no heating, it was freezing cold outside with snow, and the aquarium water was ice cold for most of the trip. I thought there was no way that they would be alive on arrival but sure enough both were alive and well, remarkably cold tolerant fish.

    how many times have you been "barbed" while handleing these beauties? i had a 10 inch common spotted pleco that would "barb" my husband every time he tried to catch him.... the cutey pie would just glide right into my hand when i had to move him out for a tank scrubbing. I dont like leaving the bigger ones in while i scrub when i have a big tank due to stressing them out! :D fish are people too and you seem to know that.

    Live in central Florida. 1,700 gallon pond in my rear screened room. Added two 3"-4" plecos 4 years ago. They winter-over fine. Now they are 15"+. The only down-side is "I suspect' they feed on the Koi & Gold fish spawns. My biggest mistake was adding 4 Platinum Sailfin Mollies 4 years ago. They too winter-over fine. PROBLEM is, I now have 400-500 mollies, swimming around.
    Last spring I introduced 2 small angels in the hope of culling the fry. Worked well but could not remove them in the early winter. Did remove two very large angels when they floated up in Jan.
    Any suggestions for controlling my mollie hoards would be appreciated.
    Anyone want free platinum mollies?

    Kudos to the trap method. Dude, I have no patience cathing difficult fish...NONE! You're a better man than me for taking a lot of your time for that. Maybe buy or make a larger inexpensive fish trap suited for plecos so you don't lose too much time catching one per day...or week. Anyway, what the hell do I know, I'm just trying to make it way easier for you. Good Luck my man, and please let us know your ultimate solution👍🏾.

    After reading through the comments, firstly I think you are very fortunate to be able to keep tropicals outside even in the height of summer, and secondly I would set up 5 or 6 bottle traps with different baits. Cucumber should work well.

    I have Plecos but they all quite small right now. Getting ones that’s about 14 inches to add to my Oscar tank. But if he outgrows the he’s going in the pond. Not expecting him to grow that fast since he’ll be in a tank. I’ve noticed the ones I got in tanks grow slower. But hopefully by the times he gets really big I’ll have my own place which will be a couple years down the road and a massive tank for him

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  5 лет назад

      Provide a lot of veggie based foods (algae wafers, cucumbers, zucchini) and you can notice some decent growth in a tank...I just can stand how much pleco's poop...really insane!

  • @dkphantomdk

    looks like a huge job to catch them..
    - you can make a wall of fine mesh net with stone in the buttom to keep it to the buttom of the pond to shield of the area the fish are hiding in, and then make the area smaller and smaller until you can grab them with the fishnet..
    - maybe you could have two nets in your hand, to guide the fish slowly towards the surface.. make sure the net is just the right size of mesh to catch them, but not to fine to slow the speed of the net in the water !
    or, place a pond heater and cover your pond with polycarbonat sheats to save the heat in the pond.. ( make sure you have air stone in the pond )
    it might cost a bit to run, but its a small price to pay.. unless you are on a tight budget allready.
    but I like that you are giving your fish the pond to play in at summer ! :)

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  6 лет назад +1

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  7 лет назад +2

      I live in NJ, coldest temps in winter are 10 below 0F...my pond always freezes over...that's why its important to have a pond deeper then 3ft so that the entire pond doesn't freeze, also break holes in ice for oxygen exchange. Your in GA, I doubt you guys get as cold as up here, you could definitely keep koi in a pond.

    Okay, here's what you do. Next year, lay a large sheet of netting over the pond. Enough to cover the bottom and walls and over the sides. Let it sink, then place rocks at the bottom and the corners to hold the netting down. Then place your fish in the pond for the season. At end of season, if you have any stragglers, you pull up the entire net to nab them.

    • @dwsdarius
