Om Mani Padme hum! May all beings be happy! Thank you for this wonderful video of the most sacred place on the planet! I wonder why the Blessed Lord Buddha chose Bodh Gaya as the place to attain his Divine Awakening? One possible reason was it was known even before his birth as a place for sadhus and holy men to go to perform austerities and it was quite popular with Vishnavites as a place to go to perform ceremonies. The beautiful temples,monastaries and surrounding mountains,farms and busy merchants add to the luster and texture of the sacred town.One of the oldest and most profound lineages that trace their line of spiritual masters back to the time of the Lord Buddha is the Karma Kagyu. The current master of the lineage is Gyalwang Karmapa Ogyen Trinely Dorje. In the book, " Music in the sky:The life,art & teachings of the 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje," His Holiness wrote a beautiful poem that captures the imagination and inspires the heart and mind of the reader. He wrote: Entering the middle way. The sun of vajra mind, simplicity itself, pervades the entire expanse of phenomena's space; The primordial nature of mind cannot be destroyed: it is radiant clarity,great bliss,and the vast extent of emptiness. Your profound wisdom, a knowing free of veils, dawns for every living being. Guide of the fortunate kalpa, through your name, ' GAUTAMA," may a rain of auspicious flowers descend." This is a powerful testimony of His Holiness that the bond between the Karma Kagyu and the Buddha of this " fortunate kalpa" is ever strong and real today as it was 2500 years ago. The Karmapa holds that lineage today. His holiness also wrote about the Great Seal in a verse called, " Pointing out Mahamudra" he wrote: Like the illusory face of the appearing world, the movement of mind is not touched by artifice; It is not altered by action,freedom or realization. to remain in the depths of mind free of reference is known as mahamudra." Is this the same realization that the first patriarch Maugalana had when he asked the Lord what is truth and the Blessed one held up a flower as his response? Truthfully, there are many great lineages in Japan,china indo-china,nepal,bhutan and in other places that have a connection to the Lord --and that is the beauty and majesty of Bodh Gaya the little hamlet in bihar that was the center and authorship of these great traditions and also the spiritual renaissance in the near east and greece.There were buddhist missionaries in egypt whose teachings had a considerable influence on such great thinkers as, socrates,plato , Aristotle and other greek and roman philosophers who form the basis of western rationalism. Who doesn't know the famous saying of socrates, " Know thyself"! Bodh Gaya and the Lord Buddha is apart of the western consciousness and hence Bodh gaya is not only a holy place for Dharma practitioners but for all people of the world.Lastly-it is interesting to note that the architectual structure of the Maha Bodhi temple built around 300 bce strongly resembles the egyptian hieroglyph for annu or heliopolis--the city of the gods. Coincidence? One can only guess. May all beings have the good fortune of going to Bodh Gaya! Om Buddhaya Namah ! MANGALAM!
