Dernière volonté is indeed a great project, one to be obsessed about. I just feel sorry for those not understanding French because the lyrics are really great. But of course, the music speaks for itself. I like how he kept me interested while evolving all the time during his career. I guess you also know his other project but the first three albums of Position Parallèle are also great. I agree the best entry point into DV is Les blessures de l’ombre, together with the following album Devant le miroir. I was totally obsessed with this album when it came out in 2006, much like you.
Both compilations Ne te retourne pas and Commemoration are really great as well, awesome songs on there, just less cohesive than those two albums. There is nothing similar indeed and that’s why it’s so cult. Geoffroy is a great musician and great lyricist and you can play the first dv albums and the later ones and just realize how good he’s become with his skills, even though it became more song oriented and less military.
Another great French album in the genre, though much more atmospheric is this: ruclips.net/video/6X1U16eWa38/видео.htmlsi=i3-HnUs7SIP4UOea
My mind immediately jumped to turbo-folk when I heard the words "military" and "pop" right next to each other. But now I've got a whole new rabbit hole to dive into!

Also known as partial mop.
I swear, I can't think of many other music RUclipsrs who cover as many different genres as you do, and describe it in such a detailed manner. Loved this video!
Just a small correction though, Laibach is a Slovenian band, not Slovakian
your french pronunciation was so bad i thought the dude was an Italian.
Finally someone talks about this genre of music on RUclips. Also, great T-shirt! Extortion is probably my favorite aussie powerviolence band
you’ve introduced me to some very intriguing music since i found your channel a few years ago and hope to keep learning about more. it’s crazy how much music is out there and we will always be finding something new and interesting to us. i’ll have to check out those groups you mentioned that i’m not familiar with. thanks for digging so deep and informing people on some very cool music.
nice video, just a small point, Laibach are Slovenian not Slovakian . Might not seem a big deal that side of the pond, but kinda like calling Americans Canadians
Trust me I’m aware it’s a screwup . Regardless of who and where it’s vital to address them by the correct state .
Hey, it's ok, LIFE IS LIFE
wtf that derniere volonté album is CERTIFIED BANGER!!!!! 🔥🔥🔥 thank you for another genre ice berg
You nailed it man. Excellent video
Love this, especially Novo Homo thanks for sharing. If you would have asked me a day ago what genre of music this is I would have said “movie soundtrack”. Reminds me a little of NIN, Portishead, Rammstein and Bjork.
Very captivating stuff. Guess I'll also be getting addicted. Thanks Wyatt! :D
Fun fact: Laibach is the only "western" band ever to play in North-Korea
Lmfao that shocked me finding out about that
Dernière Volonté is amazing
The true example of pop music played to marching drums is Svalbard from Belarus. Especially true with their last album they made after renaming to Erde - Bose Zeit
DV is indeed basically second to none, and it's hard to impossible to find something similar in atmosphere and approach.
What you could try and might like, is the French project Life's Decay. Though they have a female singer, and it's in most parts less martial and militant, but a bit more “playful” (especially because of the female voice), it is probably the only project that would come to my mind, that has an even remotely similar atmosphere.
Try out the album Eklaasera. Tracks like "Cavaleraie", "Eisenval" or "Swanics" especially.
If they don't satisfy your Dernière Volonté hunger, they are still a very interesting project with an extremely unique approach juggling somewhere between Military Pop, Neoclassical and Chansons.
Absolutely loved this! I'm a huge fan of martial industrial and getting a bit more pop into it sounds so much like my thing! Also, completely off the topic, could you recommend few songs for a Vampire the Masquerade larp playlist (I have a playlist but I'm sure I've forgotten some, and it desperately needs something other than EBM and Neue Härte Deutsche).
Thanks for the Aion recommendation, good stuff!
Maybe you will like Actus. Their album Das Unbenennbare has a few poppy martial sounding songs.
I've hung out with Gerhard from Allerseelen a few times at shows that my wife and played with him, and later visited him in Austria. ....such a unique artist and talented person. I hope he continues to release and perform music because otherwise the world would be cheated out of amazing music. I have uploaded my cover of a Dernière Volonté song from Les Blessures De L'Ombre on my RUclips channel. First heard DV - Obeir Et Mourir when I still lived in Iceland an 1999 on an unlisted mixtape. Geoffroy from DV and I used to chat about synthesizers quite often. I have three copies of his cassette boxset of Obeir Et Mourir. ...that's the one that first got me into industrial music and power electronics. I have funny stories of hanging out with Albin from Der Blutharsch backstage in Poland. Thanks for this upload. I like your style.
Der blutharsch song title , in the hands of the master .one of those songs they made that is total military pop in my opinion but really doesn't reflect the discography of the band .very good and fun track
Seems like a good opportunity to hopefully bring some more attention to what I think is one of the best and most interesting oddities to come out of the 80s Japanese industrial scene, as well as one of my personal favorite "obscure gem" type of album, that being the 1984 release "Requiem in the Sun" by Kimihide Kusafuka (aka K2) & Techno Menses.
A one-of-a-kind and very inventive-sounding album, considering how it showcases a similar style that could definitely be described as military pop but approaching it from a somewhat different angle compared to the bands mentioned in this video, almost like an early forerunner of the sound, or a different strain of it; it's not really related to martial industrial per se since it predates neofolk and is more rooted in the classic industrial sound, but it's still filtered through the lens of 80s synth pop/minimal wave and is melodically and rhythmically very influenced by military marching music as well as other forms of ceremonial compositions such as dirges or anthems.
I can only describe the result as sounding something like a retro game cyberpunk reimagination of Imperial Japan
this vid made me instantly think about "military drum and bass" not really a genre since the only one ive heard that have made entire releases in that style is Lucio De Rimanez, extremely hard and tight drums from the more industrial side of drum and bass in military rhythms that never fails to captivate me whenever I listen to it again, personal favorite is autumn and if you like that style, the entire nembutal ep is a must listen
Dernière: Dehr- nee- air
Hey Wyatt, have you heard the news? 1st two Human Serpent albums are coming on vinyl format later this year👀👀
Fuck man, what a video. I cant thank you enough, i was craving new music and military pop is one of my favourite genres ever. The stuff you recommended sounds amazing! Thank you!
*PS: Holy shit, just eyeballing your video themes you got an instant subscriber.
Imagine a Peste Noire fusion of Fulk Black Metal with Military Pop mixed in would be pretty sick. I’m surprised Famine hasn’t done something like this
Deniri Volonti
Derniere Volonte?
Laibach has been concived on May 1st, 1980, in Trvbolje. They later moved to Ljubljana.
Just grabbed the new ghostly kisses LP at her philly show! Incredible stuff
Glad you made this video because i wanted to find stuff like late Derniere Volonte but everytime i try i stumble mostly neofolk or martial industrial 😅
Edit: props to Novo Homo for naming a song "Sexual Panzer" (totally gonna use that as an euphemism with my lady)

Thanks for the John Edmond video m8, been listening the shit out of Troopiesongs ever since. However, there's one band that beats even John Edmond in that regard; that band is ROME. And guess who's to blame for introducing me to Jerome's music. Fancy an Explaining Rome video or an album ranking maybe? Just an idea. I would love it.
Awesome video as usual, I checked out Derniere right afterwards and wow it was so catchy. Would u ever consider doing a band shirt collection video? Also, check out the band The Meads of Asphodel. They're an amazing, extremely underrated experimental black metal band from the UK which I feel no metal youtuber has ever talked about. Their style is pretty unique and their discography could warrant an "Explaining" video from you in the future. Check them out if you haven't!
My favorite Martial Industrial act is TRIARII
Strange rifle flex brother
I love Derniere Volonte
Btw: thanks for covering this subject in such an unbiased manner! In europe you get pretty easily accused of being a 'fascist' if you're into that kind of music....
PLEASE DO AN EXPLAINING LIFELOVER VID
Von Thronstahl's Bellum, Sacrum Bellum is a very good album of that type of sound.
It's rather Martial Industrial nonetheless. When you're looking for Martial Pop with regards to VT, »Imperium Internum« would be your album.
"Military Justice is to justice what military music is to music." - Groucho Marx
I get what this quote is saying and i understand its main criticism is on “Military Justice “ which regardless of history and event will be divisive until the end of time. But “Military Music “ is still music since it’s still in vain of “Art is subjective “ .
@@wyattxhim Yes, indeed! I think it's more meant as a fun quote. Like: It's clear that both (military justice and music) in our day and age have to exist, but no one really likes 'em. Plus: of course this was waaaay before the music you talk about. Anyway... I really enjoyed your video, Man! Been a fan since early Corona-Days and it's great to listen to your stuff!
It's both cool and accurate.
Military Pop bout to blow up on tiktok.

OT - I've noticed you haven't mentioned Cradle of filth (from what I've seen). What are your thoughts on them?
What's the name of the record on the background?
Surprised you didn't mention Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio. They put together martial, neofolk, pop and erotica imagery.
Guess I’ve been listening to the wrong albums.
Which album in particular do they mix all together?
@@wyattxhim Songs 4 Hate & Devotion, especially the semi-title song.
You also should try Triore, the project where he teamed up with Triarii. Not remotely close to Dernière, but an insanely good release.
Nice extortion shirt! They used to be based in my hometown
Laibach is Slovenian band that started in former Yugoslavia, not Slovakian and you read it as Lai - bah
Guessing of The Wand & The Moon fits in here
Otwatm doesn't have the martial element.

Plus the 2 death in june sister albums 'take care and control' & 'operation hummingbird' (co-produced by albin julius)...
Do you want total war?
Throw out Christ and bring back Thor!
I would love to hear your thoughts on Zeal and Ardor

Military pop huh... I guess I'll check it out...

whats the record playing in the background bro?
the music playing in the background is Novo Homo - Private Hell
The record on the shelf is Ghostly Kisses - Dark room

You ever listen to St. Michael's front?
"Like a Schlager U2", as somebody said. Except that sounds horrible, and they're actually really good.
The end of Ahriman is full of bangers. I think the later German album sounds a lot more generic, unfortunately.

Check out the album Hitparade by Death in Rome, it’s neofolk/martial industrial covers of pop songs
I'd like to see you do a vid on Muslimgauze.
Not enough hours in the day for discussing that project
Was "Military folk" too hot to handle..? Von Thronstahl is sometimes very pop, see cover of the Saint Are comig
the stuff he is talking about is not hot but burning already...I mean you don't see too many people openly admitting they're into this weird stuff
Deniri Vulanti pleaseeeeeeeeeeeee no...
I see you’re new to the channel
Lots of old....ahem.....Germanic tunes in that genre....if you know what I mean . Don't get me wrong. There are a lot of German military anthems that do NOT have lyrics reflecting the NSDAP. But there are also a lot that do. Oh well.
Don't get Germanic mixed up with German.
@@naturalianosswhat you just said is more malignant towards me than anything the artists I talked about have lyrics about dude … seriously calm down about this pointless witch hunt you’re seem to be so oddly fascinated and passionate about.
It’s all really horrible stuff. I went in depth back in 2012 and heard almost everything, both martial industrial and “military pop”. I found ZERO that was cool and alot of it is sort of ideological-centric and maybe in not a good way. I will admit there was one guy from Sweden that had one military pop song that fit your description of “danceable marching” music and it was surprisingly good. But of course that Swedish musician had over 50 songs. In conclusion, I found one really cool song out of the entire “genres”
