I have jotted down the tabs for this, they can be downloaded along with the new playing/introduction notes from the Stick Dulcimer playing page on my website here:
    www.michaeljking.com/stick_dul...
Today I am using the maple version of my Stick Dulcimer
I have picked this piece of music up from RUclips user Dulcimerea(who does the most amazing arrangements for Appalachian Dulcimer!)
    • Morrowind Theme on Mou...
He uses fingerpicking in his but I have simplified my version for the stick using just the plectrum.
BTW This is the main theme from
"Morrowind"(Bethesda softworks), one of The Elder Scrolls series, (I liked this tune so much I bought the game!!)
I am still learning this, (3 days now...) and my tabs are not completed fully, but its a great tune to try to play and it pushes what you can do on the stick Dulcimer!
BTW The maple stick Dulcimer in the video has a tilted back neck so that the bridge is 16mm high(my flat necked ones are 9/10mm) It does seem to project the sound out which may be great with other instruments.

I subscribed to you because I thought your videos were interesting and cool. But now that you've done Morrowind, you've ascended the Bifrost Bridge into stratospheric awesomeness! I've been playing the Elder Scrolls series games for over 10 years. I've dabbled with this tune on hammered dulcimer and fife. Very cool to hear it on the stick dulcimer.

Thanks! I have to confess, the music led me to the game, powerful stuff!! I actually purchased a copy to play (at some point, these things eat time itself!!) I am a retro gamer at heart in any case, the older games are more likely to work in emulation or windows mode in Linux for me!!

@deathslice60 Its more about the volume of air and soundboard size with the sound, a guitar has a bigger sound and deeper resonance. This instrument with its small body sounds nicer indoors, I will do a new variation of this soon inside.

The basic melody can be played on a [D][A][d] Dulc pretty easily on almost one string alone: [D]--1-2-3---3-4-5---5-8-4---5-4-3-2-1---1-2-3--3-4-5---5-8-9---8-[A]5-[D]9---9-[A]5-6-5-[D]9--8-6-5-4---3-5-4---3-2-1---1---3-2-1---1---1---1 ... [D] and [A] indicate the string up to the the next indicator. For beginners: [D] is the string closest to your face, [A] is the middle string, [d] is the one closest to the floor. The fret board needs the "6+" fret, but I count them straight 5,6,7, with 8 being the octave above open string (just to be clear). I have a very short, cheap "Dullulele" with 9 frets only, so I can't get to G5 and have to play the melody on the lower, bass string and A. Not so fancy, but a really nice beginners tune :)

The theme started in Morrowind, was also used as oblivions main theme, and then became skyrims theme. It’s the theme of the whole series

Sound wise they are much the same, Different construction though, mine are a little more like a mandolin with linings and separate fingerboard, rounder necks like a violin. I did try to get a little more volume out of my instruments but aim for tone mostly first. They are a surprise when you first hear them. Stick Dulcimer is just my Generic name to cover all type of strum stick type instruments but with no copyright worries!

I read somewhere that while 'dulcitars' where a guitar-ized version of regular mountain dulcimers, which was in turn descended from the Hummel that the Pennsylvania dutch brought over and eventually made its way to the southern appalachains, 'chord sticks' or 'music sticks' on the other hand where actually descended from a one-string very long 'bass-like'/ 'cello-like' instrument called the 'pickin stick' that was in turn descended from an old Irish and Scottish instrument that the irish and scottish immigrants brought over, that was literally constructed of a large branch with a single gut string tied off at either end...
(and eventually 2 and 3 strings got added)
Alternatively, the mountain dulcimer could have been descended from a primitive attempt at re-creating the violin with very limited resources and woodworking skills, way up in the mountains. Originally it would have been played with a bow and called a 'violin', but over the years the bow got dropped and the term 'dulcimer' popped up when people started comparing it to the hammered dulcimer in the 1800's, when the hammered dulcimer was also a popular handcrafted instrument all over america. (before pianos took over)
(or maybe the Appalachian dulcimer has its roots in all three)

    • @michaeljking
      @michaeljking  Год назад

@@-jank-willson the Appalachian dulcimer you can see the origins in german scheitholt, Swedish Hummel forms all simplified and refined, adapted by settlers. There wasn’t an instrument wire like it in the British isles but it was taken up by those settlers eagerly and the folk music developed and adapted, making it an American instrument

    • @-jank-willson
      @-jank-willson Год назад +1

@@michaeljking I have also heard that it started as a simplified, primitive version of a violin that was made with limited resources and woodworking skills (hence why it originally had a rectangle box shape rather than curved sides).
It would have been originally called a 'violin', and was played as such with a bow. But over the years the bow got dropped, and it started to be called a 'music box', and then in the late 1800's when it gained a little fame when it was played in concert halls alongside the hammered dulcimer, people started to compare the sound of the instruments and started to also call it a 'dulcimer', or 'lap dulcimer', and eventually 'mountain/Appalachian dulcimer'.
Some Irish/Scottish immigrant communities in the southern Appalachians had these type of early versions of a mountain dulcimer instruments, that had absolutely no connection to the Pennsylvania dutch or French/Swedish/danish/German people.

    • @-jank-willson
      @-jank-willson Год назад +1

@@michaeljking the 'chord stick' and the mountain dulcimer may have had completely separate origins, but got blended together over the ages. chord sticks have skinnier, longer necks than mountain dulcimers, whereas 'dulcitars' are same length and width as a mountain dulcimer's fretboard, only difference is guitar shaped body.
