it's not common to wear helmets on the field. it is common to wear facemasks, though. something that should be a college rule for pitchers to wear facemasks
Mystery_Partner acl tears, ankle injuries, and concussions are suuuuper common in volleyball, I played for six years and hardly know anyone who got out with at least a badly sprained ankle
I played softball for 10 years and that entire time face masks were required for the entire infield, including the pitcher. I have no idea why they get rid of that rule in college softball, especially since the hits are much faster at that level. A girl I know got hit in the face for not wearing one and was out for the rest of the season, it was nasty.
The thing is it's still an option for pitchers in college, but they think their to good to use them. Guys and girls. Idiots. Especially since the balls are coming at them at 80+ miles at least

My reflexes were just a split second faster and I caught it in my glove but still ended up hitting myself in the face from the force of it. Thankfully it was my glove and not the actual ball. It still shook me and I never played pitcher again.
I'm bewildered by these pitchers, get your glove up and square up to catch that out. it's like they are trying to just not get hit or catch it and it always end in injury. USE YOUR GLOVE
You say that as if they dont have .3 seconds to make a decision and as a catcher I know that is a skill you should have to play softball but they arent always expecting it and sometimes they freak out and have no time to react.
